hi all, I have recently been referred and I’m booked in for a colonoscopy next Monday. I have rectal bleeding and blood visible in my poop. I also have lower stomach pain.
I see peoples fit tests have scores but mine came back as significantly elevated fit test. What does this mean?

Thank you for posting on Colon Cancer Connected. I hate to hear you are having to deal with this but I am very glad you are taking steps to get answers. A "significantly elevated fit test" can mean a lot of things which is why the colonoscopy is getting done. It is strange that whomever wrote that didn't include a number with it. Perhaps call back and ask? It is odd a number didn't backup that phrase.
It's a measure of blood found in the stool which the cause is unknown. I would focus on determining the cause of the result which could be many things. It sounds like you are catching things very early which is great.
We do wish you the best and that your colonoscopy gets you the answers you are looking for. Please let us know what you find out. It can be helpful to others.
Thank You ...

After noting significantly elevated fit test it had in brackets (past diagnosis of Von Willebrands disease noted) when my doctor rang to give me the result she asked if I was bleeding when I did the test. On that day I had no visible blood so thought it strange for the doctor to ask but didn’t question it. I shall be asking now as I didn’t know of numbers.
I’m a 47yr old female I’ve been passing blood in stools for a couple of months now but recently had 2 big blood losses with clots (this made me think whoa and got straight on the phone to docs) i have a low iron deficiency which was expected and had to stop taking my naproxen for my back pain.
I get my bowel prep delivered tomorrow with instructions. I’m more scared because they are doing it when I’m awake (I would rather be asleep) lol. I am also signing the research as well for it.
Awake😲. Is that your choice or was that an option? I hear that's ok with some. Recently am seeing that is what is ordered. Some say they have no problem with it. They talk about being able to watch the video screen of the scope. I would think it should be your choice. Maybe you get some anesthesia but not enough to knock you out?
I tried "no anesthesia" my very first colonoscopy and that lasted all of about 45 seconds.😲😂 before they just said "good night"
Another prep tip: You can add fluid (water) if it seems thick, but you still need to do all the prep. I will often add some lime gatorade if the taste needs to be better.
yep she’s offered gas and air but I’m gonna ask for anything they can give me. Had my bowel prep meds delivered today and dare I say this drink sounds horrendous 😳 they’ve gave me picolax and senna.
I think when blood is detected then its positive ..mine was positive due to blood and i had excruciating low left side pain for 7 weeks ..i had a ct coloniscopy it didnt show anything wrong with my colon and the pain just went....i had another fit test last year which was negative as im 63 you have them every 5 yrs ...ive changed my diet and i take lactido once a day to keep my bowels open...im sure they will get to the reason but try not to worry good luck x
My bowel movements are once daily normally but since the big bleed I go up to 5 times a day.
I’m thinking positive but also thinking of the negative, I’m young and can fight what’s thrown at me (my way of thinking up to now) lol. Thank you for your positive reply ❤️ The worst and best really does help my attitude towards what’s coming 😬xx
Hi Della, I have never known anyone in the UK to have an anaesthetic for a colonoscopy. They normally give a sedative to relax you. With a sigmoidoscopy I did not have anything. I knew my FIT score because it was on the surgery web. You have a private section to see test results. I also had a CT scan of the pelvis. So it was benign polyps and diverticulosis. Also many biopsies were taken which were negative. Taking every drop of the prep cleared my colon and everything could be seen clearly. Do not worry too much, if like my experience, they give you answers straight away. I also have internal haemorrhoids which bleed and hard to stop as I am on blood thinners. Good luck, you are getting the tests you need.
awww I was really hoping to be knocked out. But the nurse that rang me has offered gas and air and fentanyl but I told her fentanyl has not been affective with me before 😬
Thank you for sharing this as I will be asking for the sedative 🤞
I have Von willebrands disease so my blood is thin to start with and they have said I need IV DDAVP Not sure why as I have had surgery’s without it before. Will my doctor tell me my fit score if I ask?
You could ask for a ct scan with contrast they dont offer it unless asked explain your nervous its a very clear way of looking at all your organs howver they cannot do biopsys so would have to do a colonoscopy then but i opted for that and my colon was clear...good luck x
I’m biting the bullet and going for it 😬 if they need to do it again then I’m asking for a ct. The picolax appears to be doing its job so fingers crossed all will be clear for the colonoscopy 🤞xx
Can I ask please what your fit test score was ? And what your symptoms where ? My fit test score was 28 because of the occasional bit of blood on my stool. I did a fit test on a stool I strained and it had a little bit of visible blood on it and it obviously came back positive I'm worried sick .
Hi, my FIT test came back 149. I had a haemorrhoid bleed just before that so have wondered if that was the cause. Anyway nothing sinister appeared. A colonoscopy just showed benign polyps. Do not worry, if you are getting a colonoscopy just make sure you take all the prep. Then they can see everything. Good luck.
They should do. Do you not have online access to your surgery? We can order prescriptions, see test results and consult with the doctor who will phone back if you need it. Better than trying to get a phone consultation which is about 4 weeks. This is life now, no more the phone call and a face to face almost the next day. How I miss that. My FIT score was 149. Though some are higher without being cancer. Best wishes for Monday.
They found 2 polyps, one 30mm and one 10mm. They took 4 biopsy’s but left the polyps due to my Von willebrands. I need to have another colonoscopy to have the polyps removed and has been marked as urgent and need it done within 3 weeks.
I have been thinking of you and hoping it all went well for you. My mam just had a positive fit of 400 and she is having an endoscopy and colonoscopy on Saturday.. such a nervous and anxious time
awww fingers crossed for your mam 💕 I know a few people at my work has had high fit tests and there’s has been benign polyps or haemorrhoids so here’s hoping for us both 🤞
I’m waiting for my second appointment for another colonoscopy to have my polyps removed so I’m hoping they benign
The colonoscopy is nothing to worry about, I panicked over nothing lol it’s the bowel prep I didn’t like as I was so lethargic and bloody hungry haha xx
I got everything crossed that the results are good for you and my mam. She is worried about the procedures bless her. It’s such a anxious time i am absolutely dreading tomorrow so scared xx
my mam had her endoscopy and colonoscopy in her endoscopy showed she has a 10cm hiatus hernia sitting underneath her oesophagus and her colonoscopy showed she had 4 polyps which they removed straight away. Awaiting her results if her biopsies and praying they come back ok? I hope you are ok xxxx
