Pregnant and potential colonoscopy

Hi all,

Ive been having blood in my stools on and off since december, i was straining and my upper left side / under ribs aches every so often (can you pull a muscle when straining?? Is that a thing?) no weight loss, loss of appetite etc but i suffer with awful health anxiety and i also have endometriosis (which could be the cause bit waiting for gynae for an appt) so i automatically assume the worst with everything. Ive been back and forth with my dr until i said can i please have more tests for reassurance.

So ive had a full blood test (all fine) faecal calprotectin test (normal) and a FIT test. This came back abnormal. So of course ive gone into a meltdown and a few days after found out im pregnant. I also got a call from the gastro team as im on a 2 week rule and now they have to speak to gynae because im pregnant. I did say i would still have the colonoscopy as im terrified i have the nasty C. They have yet to come back to me.

Has anyone been in this position before? Im 31 and panicking. I felt sicky this morning but im putting it down to the pregnancy but im worried its not, symptoms are so similar now 😔 Im sorry for the long post im in tears and miserable everyday when i feel i should be over the moon with my pregnancy.

Thank you

My Gastro wouldn’t do a colonoscopy while I was pregnant so I waited until after my baby arrived. I did have a sigmoidoscopy but that gives limited info.

I have a feeling they might say they wont do it. Its early days and i said i would take the risk but i suppose i have to listen to them

Hi . I know seeing blood in your poop is scary. In which I posted on a couple post on here I’ve been going to the bathroom blood almost two years now. I’ve had two colonoscopys and a endoscopy. Which none seen any abnormalities accept a few internal hemorrhoids. I also suffer with health anxiety I actually start seeing a therapist for it . I know how seeing blood in your poop can send you into a complete spiral it really does suck. But don’t think the worst . I did too an I’m still bleeding with no answers other then internal hemorrhoids. Getting a colonoscopy after your pregnancy will be ideal to put your mind at ease . But I just did see my GI doctor last Tuesday and she said internal hemorrhoids happen a lot during pregnancy/weight gain . Which I didn’t notice when I lost twenty five pounds I stopped bleeding for 9 months an when I put the weight back on it came back. But seriously I know how hard it is not to worry about it. But don’t let this ruin your pregnancy. Most chances are internal hemorrhoids

Thanks for the reply. Im wondering if it is internal hemorroids. I didnt have anything like this in my last pregnancy so obviously my brain is going 100 miles n hour 😔I hope the hospital calls back asap, i cant wait any longer

Hello. I can relate to you. Last year when I got pregnant, I started experiencing the same symptoms as you. I had moderate amount of blood with my stool every time I had a bowel movement. This started about 18 weeks into my pregnancy. It was terrifying. I was referred to a colorectal specialist where I was told I couldn’t have anything completed until after my pregnancy which was very frustrating and scary for me as well. I specifically found this page in hopes that I could find someone that related to me. I gave birth in May of last year, had my colonoscopy in August and it ended up being diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis. It is easy for our minds to go to the worst possible places. I felt the same. I also was convinced that I had some kind of cancer which led my mind to feeling hopeless and negative. One set of advice that I finally gave into was I couldn’t change the situation and the only thing I could do was be hopeful it was something that could be cured and focused on enjoying being pregnant and the things I could control in my health. I now have a healthy almost one year old little boy and my UC cleared up with some different medications. So hang in there. Enjoy the small things as best as you can and hopefully this will give you some peace of mind. :)

Thank you so much for the reply 🙂 ive been updated that they basically wont touch me with a barge pole 🙄 they also think its defo not the cancer route but i cant believe anything until they do the colonoscopy. They also want me to do another FIT test to see if its changed or not, but thankfully they arent going to discharge me.I feel a bit better but im still scared and panicky x

Hi Becs, it sounds like it’s pregnancy haemorrhoid’s. For what it’s worth, when I had a bowel tumour I had no runny blood, little bits of red tissue in stool and mucus. That’s actually why I had it for years before doing anything about it. Try and enjoy your baby and drink lots of fluids etc. if you’re still anxious then consider a private colonoscopy.
