Colonoscopy is intolerable w FMS??

Hi. I really need to understand if fibromyalgia actually causes acute intolerance of colonoscopy done the typical, scoped, way. Sedation was to have combined fentanyl & Versed. Had doc see me *just prior,* say it was going to be rough, painful, 'you won't do well w it, pain that's intolerable..., my experience...," throwing in graphic details. The RN present, who'd have been handling the sedation, exhaled & in exasperation and regret (for me), said, "I'd have never said that that way." Obviously... So can anyone verify colonoscopy is intolerable bc of fibromyalgia??? Thanks.

Hi SRae,

Thank you for posting in Colon Cancer Connected. I do not have first hand knowledge with fibromyalgia. You bring up some good questions. You do need to get this colonoscopy done. It's understandable the fibromyalgia would make you more sensitive to pain, but to the point the sedation during a colonoscopy would not be enough to overcome it? It looks like people with fibromyalgia do have special anesthesia issues especially on the recovery side of the procedure. It looks to be very individualized reactions as well.

I hope there are some in this group that have handled this issue and can tell you how they did it. I look forward to seeing some more responses to this as well. We do wish you the very best. Please keep us informed as you find out more information.

My friend, female, 56 with fibromyalgia and Bechets Disease has had numerous colonoscopies done over the years.

She's tolerated them really well, with twilight sedation. Hope this aids putting your mind at ease.

just had a colonoscopy since diagnosed with FMS likely triggered by Lyme disease. I received Fentanyl and Versed during the procedure. I was so surprised that the procedure was so painful. It was not the past 2 times I had it. I woke up during the 2nd procedure and did not have pain. This time I was unable to wake up but I was aware and could hear myself moaning because of the pain.

Not what you're looking for?
