Thank goodness it's not just me. Gone to the Dr since 2016. Colonoscopy 2019, a few pollups, humanoids of course, the answer they said; was I needed a diet change. Did that, added lots of fiber+dialy vitamins and still blood...

Hi Jon0000 ,

Thanks for posting in our community. Rectal bleeding isn't often discussed - so many GI symptoms are "taboo". Are you happy with your GI doc? Might be worth looking into a second opinion as you are still experiencing bleeding. Have you had any break in the bleeding or has it been consistent? Please consider seeking out a second opinion!

It isn't 100% but about 80% of the time. I may go a few days without. I have a referral awaiting me to get to presently. I will keep the group posted. It is a very concerning thing, to me at least, and my Dr's so far act unconcerned? I'm a retired veteran so maybe I'm not portraying my issues admittedly enough?

Hi Jon0000 ,It can be really hard to "read" a doctor and so we try not to put too much into body language, seeming lack of concern, etc. It could be their bedside manner, it could be a million things that have nothing to do with you. You are correct though in questioning about how you portrayed your symptoms - so think about what you explained to them and what facts you gave.

If you are thinking of a few facts that you didn't share, the severity of the blood, frequency, etc. then it may be worth contacting them again, depending on how soon your appointment is.

There are so many potential causes for rectal bleeding - it is more common than most people know (as you referenced before, "it's not just me!" HOWEVER, I just want to be clear that anytime rectal bleeding occurs, it needs to be checked out. It could be hemorrhoids, fissures, or other causes. But it always needs to be checked out and hopefully treated and resolved.

The anxiety of seeing blood when you use the toilet is very real, and you are doing exactly what you "should" be doing now, which is seeking a medical appointment.

In advance of your appointment, be sure to have written down a list of all medications that you are currently taking, including over-the-counter medications and supplements. Often, patients with GI issues will also keep a food journal to track food and beverage intake, bowel movements, any pain or bleeding, etc. This could be useful information for your doctor. Additionally, it could show you a pattern (for instance, possibly being lactose intolerant, if you experience diarrhea after eating dairy).

Try to distract yourself in the meantime - with things that will get your mind off your symptoms. Sometimes a walk, a bath, or even a Netflix binge can be a nice distraction.

Please keep us posted and we'll be thinking of you!
