Every morning once a day within 10 minutes of being up I am having to rush into the bathroom and it is such a urgency to come out with alot of blood and very loose soft stools. Each evening before the morning my stomach gets full of wind extremely strong bad smelling and it is like this blood builds up over night and has to released as soon as I get up. I am under my gp at the moment for suspected giardia again as I was last year but no tests have confirmed it ever. I am extremely worried about it all and have done nothing but Google for months on end. It's really strange as it is only once a day first thing every morning and I have no control over it. Theirs no pain just terrible wind like rotten eggs each night and then loose really bloody stools in the morning it's like it builds up over night ready for the morning. Any advice would be appreciated please. I do have photos of the blood to show my GP but I can't figure out what on earth to do. I don't eat much as I thought food was a culprit I leave dairy alone, caffeine and eat very low fodmap slightly bit of gluten but not much. Nothing has helped. Been on metronidazole last week again and still no change.

Hi Sooty712,
Thanks for posting with us again. Did you get that colonoscopy last year? Anytime thereβs blood in the stool there needs to be an answer for it. I know you had a FIT test last year and the result should have been scheduling a colonoscopy. Iβm not sure if Guardia can be a cause of blood in the stool? I know it can be the cause of diarrhea and some other symptoms. But you absolutely need to have an answer for why there is blood in the stool. That should be the goal of your GP as well.
I do wish you the best in finding out whatβs going on. I do believe a colonoscopy will give you the information that youβre looking for. It can lead to a definitive answer or at least eliminate some of the speculation. So, please speak to your GP about how you can get answers for why there is blood in the stool. Also, please let us know what you find out. It is that type of information that can be helpful to others on this site as well.
Thank you,

Hi and thank you for your response I hope you are well.I didn't have a colonoscopy last year in the end I had a ct enterology scan with contrast dye where they said that everything was normal no signs of IBD related inflammation and no signs of anything else to indicate anything serious. I was given metronidazole and so was my daughter as she also has the exact same issues happening too. The metronidazole was given for suspected giardia and after two rounds it seemed to help we had been great for 7 months just left with alot of joint pains. Over Christmas though we had some stress and indulged in foods a little more than usual and since then we have been facing it all again this time slightly worse. It started as diarrhoea then bloody stools and now it's to the point where blood is coming out from the bottom even without passing stools. It has this strange pattern to it where the evening brings excessive wind and stomach noises and then it's as though blood builds up over night and I have to rush to the bathroom and release it as it feels like pressure in the bowels like the feeling you get when you really need to open your bowels but this morning was terrible as all that has came out is blood and I have been three times already with just blood. It always eases off come the mid morning and then starts the cycle again in the evening. I am worried sick and wondering if it's infectious colitis caused by some virus or parasite. This morning I have requested my GP send us for a referral to gastroenterology as I would like a sigmoidoscopy asap. He has done stool tests last week and we are awaiting the results stills. I just hope he can do the referral fast. I'm not sure if the antibiotics have made this very worse. Unless someone can find the cause we can't get given the right treatment to hopefully clear it up.
I will keep you posted for sure.
All the very best and thank you again.
I've decided to go to A&E hopefully they can help us. Will keep you posted.Am so scared and worried.
Not sure what to expect from what will happen when we get there.
ok. That would be a second opinion which is great to get. No problem doing that. Make sure to write down everything going on since last year so you won't forget to cover something. Focus on getting answers. Don't need to be stressed. You are taking action to get on the path to being well. Put all your energy thereππͺ. You got this.
Thank you so much. Upon being seen and giving over all of the symptoms that we are experiencing they have said what I had honestly thought from the start a year ago. They believe it maybe infectious colitis caused by a parasite or infection and have left my GP the information to forward me to gastro if these recent stool samples still show nothing as then a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy will be done to fine it with much much hope.In the meantime I said how frightened I am by the morning pressure feeling and blood loss and expressed how I'm deeply concerned about it and she assured me that the infectious colitis can cause this type of things but if anytime it gets far to much to call for a ambulance. I prey it calms down and that if it is more blood caused by the metronidazole it hopefully settles soon.
For now I must just wait until I get where I need to be hopefully with a full diagnosis and the correct medication.
Thank you so very and I will post and update soon as I know anymore.
All the very best to you all.
Hi TickleFairy,
Thank you for stepping in with a similar situation. Any blood in the stool needs an answer. Now I'm not a doctor, but I would think if you are visualizing blood in the stool on a somewhat regular basis and have no real certain diagnosis, the colonoscopy would be a good next step. I'm glad you are seeking answers as well. The cause could be a lot of different things. As you said, they just need to narrow down the possibilities.π
I wish you the best in getting that and being on the path of being well again and not being concerned about what may be happening.
Tom
Do update us on what the doctor said and recommend and good luck will be in
All the very best to you for today and hopefully you will be on the path to finding out some answers. Please do keep us updated and the very best of luck to you.
Am very sorry to hear that you are having to go through all this. It is so draining and I am the exact same with the time it can't pass by fast enough.I myself have been to the toilet five times today all with a lot of bloody diarrhoea and it is all so terribly draining wish it would come to a stop. Feel like I have a stomach bug as everything I eat doesn't want to stay with me and yet I'm avoiding all food groups and eating so bland. It's really frustrating as I can't get anywhere with my GP until my stool samples are back.
Really hope you don't wait too long for the colonoscopy and that you get onto a path of recovery soon.
All the best to you and very good luck.
Awww yes roll on summer lovely warm weather to at least sit back and enjoy. I have spotted first daffodil too in the garden makes a nice feeling to see spring on its way.Glad to hear your mum is better today bless you both.
Totally agree with you in missing the chocolate I have not eaten any chocolate in over a year but yet I can still remember like yesterday the lovely taste of it. I did try almond lattes a while ago and they didn't seem to agree with me so be careful with coffee as everyone is different in how the react to it.
Good to hear that your bloods have come back normal that is excellent news.
I am definitely having the worse day I have had so far for me it is the not knowing what it is that is most concerning as I have never had anything like this before.
Please keep me posted and I shall certainly do the same too.
Hopefully this helps others at some point.
Best wishes to you all.
Good morning Ticklefairy.Excellent news that you have a appointment in place at least you shall get some answers and hopefully get onto a path of recovery.
Glad to hear that you are also feeling better and that your symptoms are easing up a little that's fantastic hopefully if it is colitis it will go back into remission soon.
I am thinking mine is also ulcerative colitis it is matching all the symptoms to a tee. I had stool samples back for parasites they were all clear and I am awaiting the calprotectin results hopefully later today they may come back.
My doctor has also raised a DNA test for me to do to see if I have had any previous infection or parasite that may have induced all of this in the last year, I am pleased his doing this π
I have a appointment on Monday to be referred to gastro and I am certain that I will need a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy very soon.
So far today terrible bloody diarrhoea two times, I'm sticking to a very bland basic diet with the hope that it helps to calm it down.
Stay positive about your appointment and remember the sooner it is done the sooner your treatment can begin to feel yourself again.π
I also can't wait for that day to come too.
I shall keep you posted and the very best of luck to you with it all.π
Thank you for all your support and tips it really does help so much.Absolutely the whole post virus infection thing is definitely I think a good path as it may open up the reasons for these flare ups being induced and at least keep us on our toes to try to avoid any viruses as much as possible in the future.π
Obviously with UC the immune system is already under attack to some degree and I suppose anything on top would just cause the symptoms to become more agggrivated.
I do hope everything goes really well for you with the colonoscopy and well done to you already for opting for just the gas and air, absolutely amazing π I don't think I shall be quite the same.
I am already dreading the thought of it all and not quite sure I will get through even sedation worries me as I have never had it before but don't think I can manage without it and I remember when I had my children I didn't get along with gas and air just made me feel very sick.
It's funny how i have had children yet I fear this camera going in so so much π fear of the unknown i thinkπ
Anyhoo I suppose we have to get through this in order to find better days for ourselvesπ
Please do keep strong and look after yourself and your mum. Hope she's now on the mend fully bless her.
All the best again to you bothπ
Good eveningSo glad to hear that you also faced a better day without any blood as I have also been lucky today, (the first time in a while.) I only went once and although it was completely loose there was no blood and that cheers me up no end. I have to say it is crazy as I have become so used to seeing it that this morning really made me happy to find none. As you said is still far from normal though but at least we had an improvement even if it is just for today. π
I am sticking to a very bland diet and will do so until I get seen by gastro , I am also gluten and dairy free plus soya free which can be tricky at times to find things but I had some fish and rice for dinner and as plain as it all is I'd rather eat this way if it helps keep my symptoms controlled abit (which im hopeful is working).
Very interesting that you read about the viruses I do also think this could be a cause for things like this. I am awaiting the DNA test results should be back this coming week.
I have always been careful with eggs and beans especially the two together π€₯ I know I pay for them if I eat them even before the flare, just the extra gas alone would cause most discomfort for me.
On a different note I am hoping the weather permits tomorrow as would like to plant a few bulbs in the garden and get my rabbit out for a lovely run π weather today has been very rainy so hopefully tummy and weather are happy tomorrow π Sunday roast unfortunately is off my menu for now so I shall fill my day with other things π
Fingers crossed for us that our flare ups are trying to calm themselves down and that we get our long awaited answers soon.π
All the best and thank you for asking how my day had been.π
HiHope you had a really nice day at your mum's and enjoyed your dinner. Just had mine am still playing safe with fish and rice seem to be ok with that one.π
Had normal bowel movement this morning was very relieved hopefully I'm doing something right with this and getting it back into some kind of remission.
Sorry to hear that you had a little blood their this morning definitely agree could be caused by doing too much. Try to take things easier for abit and fingers crossed for you that it settles down soon π
Good news that it is not long for you now to wait to get the colonoscopy over and done as that will be the most important stage out of the way and shall most certainly make some clearer sense of everything π
I'm also looking forward to speaking with my GP tomorrow he should be able to do my referral as the calprotectin test should be back in the morning and his been putting it on hold until then ( I will let you know what number it comes back as I am assuming it shall be high but it's to be expected).
On a positive note had a great day in the garden today abit cold but nice all the same got some more spring bulbs planted which shall please me greatly when they bloom and I put out lots of bird seed for the birds as I do like to look after them π
Hope you have a lovely evening I'm planning to relax with a nice hot water bottle and some Downton π love that show and keeps my mind afloat during all this.π
Speak soon and take care
Note to self ... move the "drink to clear" timeline up at least 2 hours both the day prior and the day of the procedure. This lets you be calm before bed and not having to worry about finding a loo (too much) the day of the procedure while travelling to it.ππ€β€οΈ
Excellent advice so if you start the prep two hours before you alt to and get up earlier in the morning and do the same thing then this would save endless trips to the bathroom during the night and the day of the colonoscopy πI'm definitely going to do this if I have a sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy as I was already panicking about the journey and being in desperate need for the bathroom.
Many thanks and all the very best π
Good morningSorry to hear that you had a bad day yesterday that's the thing with this it's so very up and down from one moment to the next. I do think food plays a massive part in it as I had a little bit of vegan mayonnaise with some chips for the first time since my flare up began and I paid for it this morning as had a little bit of blood back π I felt it pretty much as soon as I eaten them my stomach started to make a few unsettled noises, so i won't be eating them again.
I spoke with the doctor yesterday and told him I am basically eating like I have UC and that it is working he said my stool culture tests were all normal so no infection and we are still waiting for the calprotectin then he shall do my referral he does honestly think that I have UC as last year when I had this my calprotectin was raised over 1000 but because it settled down for seven months we thought I was better.
Good news though you only have 7 days to go now till hopefully you get some long awaited answers and some help in dealing with it all.π
Nice to hear that you are finding ways to keep relax. Hope you enjoyed your film π
I'm glued to Downton at the moment got the box set and had never watched it before as I didn't think I would like it but turns out I absolutely love it π
Enjoy your day and fingers crossed it is better than yesterday for you in the bathroom department π
Afternoon Tickle fairy π
Glad to hear you had a nice relaxing day with your lovely little kitty cat they are such beautiful champions that is for sure. I used to have a wonderful little cat called Lady many years ago she was like my best friend alongside my dog at the time Boyce he was equally as lovely and they do really help to comfort us at times of need π
Sorry to hear that your bathroom journey is still playing up but positive thinking as only five days to go now and all shall be hopefully diagnosed ππ
I got my referral to gastroenterologist done today as my calprotectin results came back and they are high at 1800 as I expected though to be honest so I wasn't surprised. Just pleased I'm going to get a face to face appointment at last with gastro and then hopefully a scope and a diagnosis ππ
The sooner the better to find everything out for the both of us as then we can finally find a way forward even if it means some changes as long as we get on that path of recovery π
I have stuck to foods like gluten free pasta, fish, potatoes, tinned carrots and gluten free bread and cereal with almond milk and so far am pleased to say no blood still so that seems to work but shall ask to see a dietician after diagnosis as eating hardly anything and it is not beneficial for nutrients so may have to take some supplements π
Enjoy your dayπ the weather is lovely and sunny which is always a positive.
Speak soon and stay positive and fingers crossed for us both in everything to come πππ€β€οΈ
Oh and Downton abbey are set to be making another episode which will come on the telly on Sundays just not sure when π but really can't wait for that.Thought I would let you know so if you do get into it that will be great to watch but I'm sure your mum will look forward to it πβ€οΈ
Very sorry to hear that it is still causing issues today for you mine went like that where it thickened up and was less watery I suppose it does really depend on what we eat and that is usually a very clear sign of ulcerative colitis as that responds well to diet changes and does help it to settle down quicker. That's a good choice for tea tonight mines quite the same I'm having mash with gluten free fish fingers and tinned carrots it's not the greatest but at least we can eat something and that's better than nothing πDefinitely get some extra iron supplements after the colonoscopy if they agree you should as that will certainly help with the tiredness and energy levels.
I am the same with summer planning a nice relaxing one just be happy to enjoy the sun in the garden and get a few nice walks in got a lovely little nature reserve park that I'm hoping to visit again take abit of lunch down their and sit with the duck lol π
It's the the little things that can make a huge difference when you feel these ways and they can make life seem alot less stressful too.π
Enjoy your dinner and the garden hopefully the sun pops out for you π€β€οΈ
Sounds absolutely beautiful already I bet it shall look lovely when it's all come together and the plants are in full bloomπYes please pop up a photo in the months ahead I will keep an eye out for it sounds so blissful and nice π
Good luck with the prep today for the colonoscopy tomorrow.Really hope everything goes really well and you get all the answers needed.
Stay positive and focused and be strong.
Will be thinking of you β€οΈπ
Hi Twinkle Fairy or better still Hello Summer Sunflower π Love the new name choice very fitting for the summer months ahead πGlad to hear everything is going well with the preparation for tomorrow that's fantastic finger crossed you get some good sleep tonight before the day is finally here and done withπ€
I'm sure you cannot wait for it all to be over and to get those long awaited answers. It does sound very much like ulcerative colitis which I also believe is what is happening to me. I've been good no set backs yet still keeping it extra safe with my food choices which has helped massively ππ
Awww that's a shame you fell asleep in Downton lol is better to try to catch it from the start as way into the series will be it tricky to follow as so much goes on in Downton lol π I'm glued to it on series six now then shall move on to the movies π
Keep up the fantastic positive work and stay focused.π
Wishing you all the very best for the morning prep and the afternoon procedure ππβ€οΈπ
Speak soon take lots of care π
Good luck for today.ππ€πβ€οΈHope you managed to get to get some sleep and that the prep wasn't too bad this morning π at least that part is all over now π you shall soon be on the way to a new less worrying road ahead as the not knowing is so much worse sometimes. Fingers crossed they are ale to tell you some things today to set your mind at rest π€
My sister had terrible fibroids had multiple operations for them and still they have not been able to remove it all π they can be very uncomfortable and unpleasant. Definitely get them looked at as the sooner the better with these types of things π
Glad to hear you are finding some good comedy Joanna Lumley is classic and of course Dawn french π they are definitely great choices for when feeling slightly unwell a great little lift to the mind π
I'm taking things steady today shall have a tidy up around the house and may go for a little walk just to get abit of fresh air in the body lol π
Take extra care today π I shall have everything crossed for you. I hope you find it all ok and if you are having sedation hopefully that will make it alot less stressful and abit more relaxing π€π
Well done you sound as though you have done marvellous with the whole preparation which is so nice to hear as it shall certainly worry me less now when it's my time. πI'm already concerned about how I shall go without food for that length of time lol as I do love my food even just the small things I'm limited to eat now a day's I still always can't wait for lunch and dinnertime to come π but I suppose with all the fluids you probably feel quite bloated from it all and of course the tummy must feel very uneasy.
Im not sure when I'm going to be lucky enough to be seen yet as it stands they have me booked in to see a gastro for a face to face appointment but it's not till June which I'm shocked at but they did say once they triage it properly they shall probably bring the date alot more forward π which I really hope π€ as June is very far away when you live on the edge of your seat with food and I really just want to know what is what as soon as I possibly can .
I think I will have a look at that show on Sunday as I really enjoy programmes like that sounds like something I will be able settle down to π
The sunflowers sound like a very good idea I may do the same come to think of it I normally put them straight into the ground and the last few years they haven't done as well so I think potting them first would really help.ππ
Hope your at the hospital now and things are all running on time for you.
Stay strong all shall be done soon πππ€β€οΈ
Hi sunflowerHope all is ok and everything went well yesterday and that you now finally have some answers to your long awaited journey π
Weather is really dull and rainy here today hope you have the sun out where you are π€
I'm planning a cupboard clear out to pass abit of time away as not got much else to do today.π
I have now ended up with terrible hemmorids thanks to sneezing whilst trying to go to the bathroom lol π₯΄ has caused more issues on top of already enough bowel problems.
Still keeping to the limited food diet and doing well in that respect so can't complain much at the moment am very glad and grateful that I have it under some control.π For now anyway just hope it lasts till I get to see gastro π
Hope your resting up today and enjoying some nice food after a whole day of nothing to eat ππ₯ͺπππ
