Pneumonia Booster

Has anyone had a problem getting their pneumonia booster ? My consultant has recommended to GP but it was refused. I am 3 years into remission after 4 sessions of Rituximab and Bendamustine Chemo.

Apparently I don’t meet my Health Centres criteria. !

Hi Content82, if you are in the UK you can go online and book an appointment at Boots. I did this last year and again this year. I get it earlier this way than I would at my GP. Hope this helps.

Hi Autumn J

Thanks for your quick response and advice.

When I checked with Boots they offered Previnar 13 only without the second PPSV23 injection 2 months later.

What was your experience ?

Thanks

This topic came up recently and I checked and found both available at Superdrug. It might also be that it’s in short supply at the moment.

My instructions are Prevnar 13 then a year later Neumovax 23.

I just got the 13 shot yesterday.

Not sure why your second shot is few months later.

If you get the Prevnar 13 first then you can get the Pneumovax 23 at least 8 weeks later. If the Pneumovax was first then you need at least a year before the Prevnar 13.

The Pneumovax is repeated in 5 years. There is some disagreement about whether it is given again after that. My doctor gives it every 5 years.

Interesting. So different.

There are two issues:

- explaining to your GP/medical practise that, in spite of treatments, CLL - immune system cancer - involves a permanent immune dysfunction.. largely unaltered by treatments.. You remain a vulnerable patient from CLL diagnosis until a new immune system treatment emerges that in some way repairs your immune system.

- standard timing of CLLer immunisations.. the latter may well be found at right in related posts (or, maybe, scroll down the page, if viewing this on iPhone/other smartphone with narrow screen.)

I am pleased to learn the key information from replies — seems to be that I need a repeat of one after 5 years.. (I’m a couple of years behind your timeline of B+R treatment..)
