Pneumonia Shot

Hello all....was wondering if anyone on here got the pneumonia shot and if so were there any complications? I did get the flu shot last October a couple weeks after I got sinusitis and bronchitis because I thought I was feeling better. It's been 5 months and I'm still coughing. My hematologist said it's ok to get the pneumonia shot but I'm a little worried about it.. Meanwhile I continue to not have any fevers, night sweats or weight loss. I am still getting monthly ivig treatments which I don't know what my level is because they haven't checked yet. I get another one March 15th and another April 19th at which time I will be getting a bunch of blood work done.

There are two shot in CLL the children's Prevnar13 and the usual Pneumovax23. You want both, but they are given apart.

Talk to your GP about the sequencing....

I had flu & pneumonia done on same day - seemed to overload my system and I had a swelling under my armpit like a large egg for a month

Here is the USA CDC's ACIP committee recommendation- see 2nd row "Weakened Immune System" and columns 5 & 6 "Pneumococcal"

cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/...

So we CLL patients are encouraged to get both PCV 13 (often used only for children) and PPSV 23 (commonly used for adults over 65 years).

But the recommended timing for us Immune Compromised is to get PCV 13 first and the PPSV 23 at least 8 weeks later- (if you mistakenly get the PPSV 23 first you should wait one year for the PCV 13):

No issues for me. I've had both and the repeat pneumavax.

I had my prevnar13 and Hib shots in the same arm last month and had no issues either. I’m due for my pneumovax23 next month.

I had the pneumonia shot a long time ago (9 years), in 2 does the first one at the same time as the flu shot bit in the other arm, and the second 2 months later. They was a slight pain in the arm with pneumonia shot.

Hi, I'm 78 year old male living in the UK. My CLL consultant suggested it might be helpful to have the pneumonia jabs as well as the flu jab. I had the flu jab in October, Prevnar13 in December and then the Pneumovax23 in February. No side effects at all 😀. Having been on Venetoclax since September, my bloods are normal and I feel very very well.

Good luck.

David.

Thank you for your reply.....continued good health!

Hi Ladydii49,

Perhaps you could ask your doctor.

My specialist thought that as I was on Ibrutimib and other medications that the flu jab would be neutralised and would not offer protection. Her suggestion was to have the other members of my family vaccinated so that I did not catch the flu from them.....

Hope you find a good solution

Best wishes, Peter

I had both vaccinations after Dx (spaced apart) . Very sore arms. My new specialist told me that the immunity they confer can be less in CLL patients due to immune system issues, and had me tested. I have the results, but will discuss what they mean at the next visit. From what I can tell, though, the numbers look low. So yes, a good idea to ask about vaccinations for those close to you.

I had both of the shots. My Dr. said we should have them again in 5 years.
