The CAP score has gone down since last year, so that’s some good news
I’ve been dieting really well however this week with no sugar at all apart from what occurs naturally in some meals… I’ve not lost an ounce, little disheartening.
Felt good after walking over 11,000 steps today though, that’s the most I’ve done in a while.
How is everyone doing? I’m ready to get stricter on my dieting. I’m unable to have bariatric surgery so it’s going to be a really hard slog and lots of hunger pangs to lose weight with hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome at the age of 53.

Hi Lauren, first things first, you've already done amazingly well, I'm sure your dieting is a big factor in lowering your CAP. Especially considering your hypothyroidism and metabolic syndrome which are tough obstacles but you are obviously taking the battle to them.
As for not losing weight consistently.... don't let that phase you, that is to be expected... when you were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome, did you go on a diabetics information course? I ask because I went to DESMOND classes and they were really really good, they explained everything about how the body processes food. Two very good nurses gave me all the information I needed at a time when I was like a rabbit in the headlights.
I'm guessing some foods take longer to pass through our bodies so the delay and the food behind it will undoubtedly add a pound (or two) .
Slow release foods are the key to not having hunger pangs so often... porridge and homemade soups... I saw an experiment where they fed soldiers a dinner and other soldiers were given the food liquidised as a soup... after a strenuous work out... the soldiers who had the soup, still had food in their stomachs while the soldiers who ate solids were empty and hungry.
Porridge I find, lets me go about 2 to 3 hours longer before I feel hungry.... when compared to any other breakfast.
When I was diagnosed type 2 diabetic my hba1c was over 100 two months later it was 59 and I had lost 1 stone. I have lost another 2 stone since then... Porridge definitely helped, I sometimes eat it twice a day... if I need a treat I'll eat a banana on toast.
You dieting is going to be tougher because of the problems you face, but look for tiny wins, do not expect consistent weight loss... this is a long process of little steps.
Keep posting to show the little wins it will give you something to aim for.

Take a look at my story. I lost about 120 pounds in 7 months. My CAP is now 198 from 315, fibroscan 7.2 from 8, and should be in the mid to low 5-6 within the next 6 months- to year. I completely reversed my NAFLD

I’m sure the thyroid has something to do with all this. I’m convinced mine has. Do they ever say anything to you about it. I’m about the same age but my Ggt is elevated and I can’t get answers, or a fibroid scan just told it’s elevated.
Did you have elevated enzymes and scans before this?
Yes they said it’s harder to lose weight with the hypothyroid and with my physical disabilities. I’ve had different advice on calorie levels. I’ve done my own research and follow the Mediterranean diet. As it’s not working the hepatologist is requesting a place on the course at hospital with their dietician as she thinks I qualify but has to check.
Hi LaurieRose - you are doing so well, don't be disheartened, you are doing really well! Remember even a 5% weight loss can be enough to start to improve your liver health. You may have seen this NHS site but if you scroll down to the bottom, some of the apps may be helpful to you.
Thanks yes I’ve seen the site thanks I keep losing motivation because I get so tired when cutting calories but hoping I will be eligible for the hospital weight loss group
Sometimes if your body is totally starved of what it is use to like sugar it can go into a panic and store it incase it needs it. Do not be put off by a 0 weight loss.
It happens to everyone. Everyone is different.
Keep going and definitely keep the excercises up. If you have no loss in 7-10 days time then it maybe that the foods you are eating may not be helpful.
For instance cutting out sugar is great but if your still high on carbs even good whole food carbs or slow release carbs out body will turn them into fuel by extracting any type of glucose/ sugar from them.
So if you still eat carbs you really need to limit them and extra steps to burn the calories.
High non fat protein, Frits and veg reduced fat dairy and water. Try slices of ginger and lemon in warm water. X
Thanks Seoe. That’s useful info. Hepatologist is recommending a statin now if my QRisk3 score is more than 10% since that news I’m trying even harder, I’ve got the digital weight watchers scales now and I’ve started a detox just for a few days. My weight is going up and down 1-2lbs a day which I know is normal. I think I need more fibre to increase my metabolism but trying to give up carbs. Very very difficult and makes me sleepy all day.
Well the next step is the blood test with nurse and dr assessment
Try eating Kellogg’s All Bran or Bran Flakes for breakfast with a banana
Yes it’s carbs but it really good carbs. That might keep your body functioning in the day with slow release carb.
Then a snack with a coffee. Do you take sugar in coffee?
If you can cook make soups for lunch or buy soups with only 3-5% fat in them and at least 2 portions of veg. Baxter’s soup is a great range.
Then nuts and fruit for afternoon
If you need a biscuit get diabetic dark chocolate ones, they really are nice and you get a biscuit crunch and chocolate flavour without the sugar. The little bit of carb in them will be ok.
Dinner do fish, meat, eggs with veg and salad. Do Ragu, Bollognaise, chilli all without rice or pasta. Lots of pulses and beans. Have a salad to start.
Or run 5-7 pasta shapes though it but whole meal. 1/2 cup of brown rice.
Water and coffee
Low call cordial. Occasionally a low cal soda.
Keep going lady you can do this

Thanks for your support. I’d like to lose 10% of my weight in six months that’s about one and a half stone I think. I weigh exactly 15 stone currently. ..the most ever 😖 I don’t have sugar in my coffee at home but up until a few days ago I’ve been a regular drinker of the iced coffees from supermarket or costa and I don’t add sugar but they must have quite a bit of sugar in the syrup. It’s not been difficult to give them up. I like herb teas. I’ve seen that green tea actually isn’t recommended for the liver. Camomile tea and pepper tea are and they are also good for digestion. I’d recommend them.I’ve got a soup maker, need to get going with it. Really really tired even round home lately though, even to prepare food. I live on my own now so not so much fun. I made myself cook when family were round for dinner.
What do you think about yogurts, is it ok to eat them?

I’m planning a healthy Christmas party this year going to see how that goes down, healthy buffet only. I’m sure the grandchildren shall enjoy. Schools and parents teach them healthy eating now which is fantastic.
Meant to ask you if you don’t mind, how is your hair. Mine is really thinning and I’m prettified that within a couple of years I will be bald. Don’t know if it’s liver or thyroid
My hair is dry and brittle but I colour it nowadays. Strangely my nails grow really quick so I don’t think I’m short of keratin. I think good nail growth is a positive side effect of levothyroxine. Should help hair growth too. I use conditioner and treatment and it feels lovely for a day but it’s bushy and wavy in the morning. I don’t know I think the liver effects everything but yes thyroid definitely does. Maybe check with dr if ok for you to take vitamin E. Also regaine shampoo is helpful for stimulating the hair follicles
