I haven’t posted in a while as my fitness has not been great. In mid June I started coughing a lot and …. to cut a long story short …. Three lots of antibiotics, two chest X-rays, blood tests and a lot of coughing later I was diagnosed with whooping cough 😔. It has been a rotten ten weeks so far and I’m still coughing.
I halted running for a while, then did some walk/run and have now returned to slow running. Slowly, slowly I am noting progress now. I’ve crept up my running to 9km (it takes me a long time to do it!) and ready for my first 10k race for over 30 years at the end of September. Here’s hoping that I am fully recovered by then!

Oh my goodness! Poor you! You’ve really been though it. You’ve done amazingly to be back to where you are. You’ve posted at such a good time…I’ve been pretty despondent about what’s happened to my running post covid over a month ago. You e given me a bit of a kick up the bum to just keep giving it a go and be patient. What an inspiration! Sending massive good wishes for your 10k race! ❤️❤️❤️
You might like to add your event to the list over on Fun Beyond 10k and Race Support…plenty of 10ks on the list ( including mine in two weeks-argh!!!). Super supportive over there and you’ll get lots of virtual cheers!
Me too! It’s awesome to be running this distance after such a setback. I’m really struggling - one run a week, tho 2-3 1/2 hour gym trips and a session of Pilates too. Work also very busy. But the Covid of a couple of months back has been tough to get back from; definitely triggered some long Covid symptoms. Overall I am stronger and fitter than pre-running, but frustrating to have less energy than I was becoming used to!
It is frustrating to work on returning to fitness after health set backs. It sounds as if you are doing a lot with the gym and Pilates too, well done 👏!
Delighted that you are starting to make a recovery. Sometimes when I have a cold I develop a cough which lingers for weeks afterwards. I was advised by a family member to get Organic Cordyceps Tablets from a health shop or pharmacy. They are just a supplement, but indeed they worked great and stopped my cough just as quickly as it started. They are worth taking as they are natural. I keep them at home now and if I feel a cough starting I take them straight away. Worked for my wife too.
Glad to hear you are recovering. Seems there are some horrible bugs out there. I’ve been grounded on and off for weeks now post COVID and topped it off with a tooth out last week. Off to attempt a slow bumble this morning for the first time for two weeks. Not anticipating any kind of pace or time but hopefully I’ll be able to keep going for 20 mins or so
I hope that it went well for you today and thank you for your encouragement. I did a better park run than last week and over the last weeks have been seeing some very slow improvement/return to health.
It sounds like you’ve had a really tough time of it! Massive congrats though on getting back up to that distance. It sounds you have that 10K in the bag. Enjoy that event when it comes!!!
Thank you! It’s a long, slow haul back to health and I’m still coughing a lot. I’ve a good group of running buddies that support me getting out and running! I met all of these at the local park run, so I’m a big fan of that too.
