Buy a good pair of running shoes AND socks to match from a specialist sports shop

Your running shoes should be at least a half size bigger than your normal day shoes.

Don't be shocked or afraid of going a full size up and having lots of room in the toe box - it might feel odd at first but it'll be fine.

As AlMorr says, the right size shoes and the right socks too.. getting expert advice can always be useful too... better than guessing, maybe:)

I went up half a size with my shoes and have good socks, but found I still need to use vaseline on long runs to help with this. I first had this happen when my feet got soaked on a long run, but am now extra cautious. That said, I still ended up with a blister after my first half, but not in any of my long runs leading up to that and my longest was 11 miles.
