Back? An eyeopening 2K...

Hiya,

Doing a digital detox here during my holiday, so no Facebook and no Instagram and as little dabbling on my phone as possible. So sorry for not reacting everywhere, trying my best to relax and internet does cause me a bit of stress!

Anyhow, I had stopped running as you might know, but my osteopath suggested I try running again to relax. And what better moment to do so than during my holiday!

Today the sun waited a long time to show itself and the temperature was kind, so THE perfect moment to try my first run back! Decided to just run and see where I got, Jeffing of course. I used to Jeff 4min30 / 0min30, but thought that to start again I'd change to 1min30 / 0min30.

At the coast and I have a safe route here of at least 5K, so headed up that one. I ran slow... really slow with small steps. At 1K I was at a point where I could turn home again and I reached 2K just at about 20 minutes (yesss slow). I decided more was not needed and I could stop.

I felt very good, though I do also feel I lost a lot of fitness. Despite running so slow, I sweated quite a bit and had to focus to control my breathing. But I also felt happy because 20 minutes (2K) felt not like too little, but instead felt good. So I realised that I don't need to run 10K nor even 5K to feel good. An eye opener which might cause me to come back officially to running 😉.

Cheers, Evy

Glad to hear your news . As long as your enjoying your run and feeling good for it that what’s matter. Enjoy the rest of your holiday with plenty of rest and feet up too😊

in reply toDoris8

No worries, the feet are up a lot 😹. I did 1 walk so far to the nearby city and back. But I do try to do a short walk every day just here on the park to get some steps in 😸

Those shorter runs are underrated. I did a similar one to you this morning-a quick 15 minute recovery run for me! Hard in the heat and I felt very stiff but glad to have done it. I wonder if couch to 5k conditions us to think that a run needs to be 30 minutes to “count” as a good run when that’s nonsense.

Yes, the most important thing is that you move. Whether that is 2K or 10K, so long as you move that is good. And as for me one of the points is to clear the mind, apparently that does not need a long time and happens on 20 minutes too 😸

So pleased to read this Evy !Well done .

And your absolutely right you don't need any numbers to make you feel good !

Just the process 😁👍

in reply toInstructor57

Thanks and yes, no numbers anymore! Though of course I do keep using my Garmin and do like to see approx. how long and how far I ran 😸

When I recover from this cold I will follow your lead and do a short run too. It will have been 5 weeks on Saturday since my last run barring a few 10 minute jeffing stints. Starting to feel better - not Covid but still wiped out!

in reply toRennur

Oh yes, no long runs to begin with for you! Your health is important and better some slow walks and short runs to help the body build up again!

A 2k run is enough as you have found out, I’ve found a few 2k loops round here that bring me back home if I haven’t time or energy for more, good to see you back running 🏃🏻‍♀️

in reply toSueAppleRun

Thanks and yes, 2K actually felt good. I was out running, but not going over it. If all goes well, I will probably do some longer ones over time. But 2K is a good distance to do without any pressure and to just do a run without any plan.

Nice to hear you're running again. Of course any run counts. In fact the NRC Half Marathon Plan has had a 15 minute recovery run in every weeks schedule so far. That you feel better for it is the most important thing of all

in reply toBirdlady64

Thanks and yes, it felt good. A bit like coming home, the run welcomed me back 😸

Delighted to hear about your 2k Evy!

Now, switch off the technology and go and have a long, relaxing bubble bath! 🛁

Not had a second run yet. Wednesday was the so called restday after my first run. Yesterday had no time before lunch due to having several errands to run and felt rather ill in the afternoon. Combination on my lactosis problem playing up, the warmth and not having eaten enough. I could hardly stand on my legs for 5 minutes, so running was a big no-no. Today spent the whole morning in a washing salon and in the afternoon it was a tad too stuffy / hot.

Not sure if I will have time tomorrow as we might visit some festivities in a nearby town. That will be a lot of walking though. And the weather promises to be hot again soon. But I know I can handle 20 mins / 2K without previous training, so I know I can and will run when I have time and it is not too hot.
