Was starting week 6 of JJMP today & as usual decided to get the longest run out of the way first. Instead of 9k, ended up doing 10k!

Just realised, 4months back exactly to the date I started c25k on Boxing Day. Never ran before in my life and I would have laughed if someone had said 4months from then I will run 10k non stop.

When I started walking a couple of years ago, I collapsed when I returned from my first 10k walk in the local park. My legs just gave up. Took me a whole week to recover and I was walking funny for 3/4 days. And today I walked back 3k after completing the 10k run. Unbelievable.

My sister ran with me this arvo and as we were chatting, we missed the phone telling us its 9k and when I checked it was already 9.3k. She was like, lets just complete the 10k. i wasnt that tired and agreed. And 10k done just like that.

Woohoooo!!

I will still complete the plan and perhaps time to think..what next?

Congratulations!!! We’ve had such a similar journey. I started c25k on December 29th and I did exactly the same thing as you with getting over enthusiastic on an 8k run to get to 10km. You must have been on such a high to see the big 1-0 come up. It’s such a milestone and you’re due a new graduate badge!

I’m also finishing off the magic plan and I think I’ll do the same kind of consolidation as after the c25k finished and not try and increase until I’m running 10K pretty regularly and comfortably. I’ve got a “race” booked for June but that was mainly to have something to aim for and my goal is to finish having run it all rather than a fast time.

I’ve had either covid or a really bad cold which has set me back a bit but before that I was starting to include more intervals and hills, plus investigating the NRC app to challenge me and help not get bored. Hoping to pick up with that this week.

You are right, we have had very similar journey so far...kind of virtual running buddies :) I am stoked, 10K is amazing and I am already thinking of what next so thats pretty special too.

I hope you recover soon from ur notcovid cold and back to 100%.

I was thinking of the consolidatiom runs too but not sure if it is recommended to run 10k 3 times a week at this stage...

Thank you! When I said consolidating, I meant repeating the final week of the magic plan. That’s going to be running 4 or 5k twice a week and about 10K on the long run for me. Definitely not 10K three times a week! I need the shorter runs for recovery and intervals!

Well again , like with C25K I would suggest getting a few more 10's in so you know you are comfortable with them .

The rest is up to you!

Do you want to keep increasing the distance ?

If so there are many plans out there such as NRC training plans (Others are of course available)

At the moment I would suggest still keep mixing up your runs !

Remember, your best development will come (In time) through a mix of long slow runs , shorter quicker runs , including things like hills, intervals and Fartlek runs .

I would also suggest if you intend to keep pushing forward that you pay attention to your diet and also strength and flexibility training .

It can be tricky , but would you put rubbish fuel into your car 🤔😁 ?Don't get me wrong , I also find it tricky, but you will certainly need to be aware of it 😁

I drive an EV 😁😜I am most of the time mindful of what I eat but I do indulge and treat myself every now and then. What I meant was what kind of diet? Its is very tricky to know what to eat for a specific exercise..there's just too much conflicting information around.

EV.... Good answer 🤣I can honestly say I don't pay too much attention to it myself ... I'm never going to be an elite athlete 🤣

I just tend to try and have a balanced diet , lots of water , and if I'm running more than 10k I will take a few carbs and fluids to help

EV is good with the way petrol prices are going at the mo. I just drive past the petrol stations :)I eat plenty of carbs anyway so I guess I just probably need to up the water intake.

Congratulations! That's the first time I've seen someone post Google Fit stats here. Is that what you use to track your runs?

I also did 10km when I was supposed to be doing 9km. The final km was all gently downhill and I just didn't want to stop.

As to what's next, the world's your oyster.

It's slightly less important to consolidate at 10km than it is after C25K, because your body is already adapting to running. Just don't be daft about it, and remember the 10% rule.

Given it's only been four months since you started, I'd still wait a few more months before even thinking of running on consecutive days. Maybe when you've got to the stage where you think of 10km as being a short run. 🤣

Thank you nowster :) i use google fit or samsung health. I haven't reached Strava level yet lol.No plans to run consecutive days unless I have run for atleast a year. I have read that too many times on this forum so defo going to keep that in mind.

10K as short run...hmmm nice goal to aim for. What will be long runs then I wonder 😜

My current routine has me doing at least one half marathon per month, and I'm trying to extend that gradually. I often do two or more relaxed 10km runs a week nowadays. I find that 10km is a really nice distance.

Thank you for sharing that. Its nice to know what everyone is doing and how it is working for them..hopefully I will start on some kind of plan by the time I finish the JJMP.

I don't think of myself as particularly exceptional, especially when I see some others doing full marathons or longer.

I read somewhere recently that pretty much anyone who can run is able to do a half marathon without special training, but doing a full marathon requires a proper training strategy.

nowster I dont think I will ever do a full marathon That is completely out of my league.

You have syncd strava with Google Fit? I dont know anyone other than my sister and I, who use Google Fit. She got it because she saw me using it 😄

Yes, it's something you can do in the Strava app interface. It's only one way though.

That's exactly how I see it nowster - I improvised everything up to metric marathon, just following advice I'd gleaned from the forum. The trail marathon was a whole different ball game though, not least because I was far from convinced I'd be able to do it.

I just needed an app to see how was my run. Samsung health comes with the phone but it wasnt working for some reason when I started running. So, my son downloaded Google Fit for me..I had never heard of it until then :)
