Having had four rest days to get over my leg / butt niggle I just had to go out today for fear of forever remaining on the couch. It was oh so easy to just stay in and convince myself I was doing the right thing lazing about.
Anyhow, I managed a slow 2 miles and yes, my pain is still there however, this post is more to do with equipment.
I think I read somewhere that running is cheap and easy. I would comment that watching the transformation of my wardrobe and drawers into places for bright yellow and green garments that the statement isn't strictly true.
Then to add to the mix we have different running shoes, man tights (oh yeah), flashing lights, headbands, buffs and now my latest discovery - the need for underwear .......
Having returned from my gentle outing today I stripped off to shower and discovered a large wear hole in my pants. This came as a bit of a shock. Upon examination of other under garments in the drawer I find similar issues resulting in my outside bin being full and my bedroom drawers now empty.
I don't wish to spend a fortune on designer knickers to wear out after a few runs so my request is for guidance on this. What do you runners do? I don't fancy wearing nappies 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Are there special runner pants which don't wear out?
No advice on pants! I suppose just go cheap and chuck them out? Glad you got out for a run and hope your injury settles down. Even when we struggle, it's worth getting out to keep up the momentum, especially in the winter
I must say, it was actually nice to get out even though i found it really really tough going. There was no logical reason for this - it was flat, weather was fine - just one of those things i suppose. I am glad that i made the effort though as i think the longer i had left it the more difficult it would have been to get out the door and back on track so to speak.
I think i will go and have a mooch around Decathlon or somewhere similar this afternoon for inspiration regarding my undergarment issues 😱
All my knickers which I wear under my shorts and man tights. I'm not sure about going commando as things fly about without support. I prefer to be snug and secure !
I’ve been giggling all way through the thread! There have been lots of posts about ‘ladies equipment’ in the past; I don’t think it ever occurred to me that gentlemen might have likewise issues! Hope it all gets sorted!
I’ve just bought some new pants, Alan. I’ll be trying them out in an hour. 🙂
My reason for them is support. I don’t find the tights offer enough tackle support like the 2 in 1 shorts do (and I don’t need pants with those). In past years, I wasn’t running the distances I now do and nowhere near as often, so I got by with ordinary undies under tights. They support well enough but over 10k, they’ll start to chaff in places I wouldn’t welcome.
I bought 3 pairs of long inseam undies for £18 from Amazon.
Oh blimey. This is a whole can of worms now. I don't wish to go commando like real runners 🤣🤣. I've been wearing snug fitting standard issue man pants such as CK or Hugo etc. which have now been disposed off. They are blooming expensive too.
Is there such things as undertights which I wear under my man tights with shorts on the outer?
Okay, a very brief (geddit?) review of my pants. They’re the best boxed and presented set of pants I think I’ve ever seen! I’m used to M&S to be honest. They’re sized in US and Japanese sizes for some reason, M and L respectively. They fit very nicely. The inseam is a generous 6” and the waistband is flat. There’s no front opening so it’s a faff going for a pee when I’ve put the tights on too.
I reserve my full recommendation for after their first few washings but so far, so good. 4/5.
I think your suggestion might be overdoing it, Alan - undertights, tights and shorts! Look up tinea cruris aka “Jock itch”. 🥴
I had to laugh at your post as my running wardrobe has grown to include all the items you mention and I have no idea how I have acquired five pairs of running trainers - mind you a couple of the cheap pairs are no longer used for running and probably never should have been!
As for pants, I bought some cheap male running pants - almost like a tight Lycra boxer short - think these were £3.95 each from Decathlon. Had several pairs for a couple of years now and they wash and wear really well. Certainly good for running in, they are very snug which avoids the problem you describe !!!
Incidentally, my favourite warm weather shorts are these, with which I need no underwear. There's a mesh panel inside which makes them very breathable. I wore them on every run from May to the middle of this month. They have been washed after every run and they still look like new.
Can’t offer advice on undies but can I suggest you take the old ones out of your bin and donate them to your local charity shop? Sounds a stretch I know but I bag up all such items (and odd socks), mark the bag “rags” and donate it. Our hospice raised over £100,000 on rags alone last year.
I usually do collect all of my clothing and make regular trips to donate them to the local charity shops. I did however draw the line with my undies on this particular occasion as it didn't seem a pleasant thing to donate - even after washing.
I’ve read all this and looked at the suggestions, laughed a couple of times, raised my eye brows over the phone at Willow who never wears them, unless it’s very cold….. the mind boggles
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this post 😂😂 it does indeed make a change for you blokes to be discussing your underwear issues. I now know more than I ever wanted to know 😂😂
