Winter clothes ?
I still heat up even in the winter but yes maybe something longer than your usual shorts and your jacket you have maybe enough. ๐
Maybe a base layer. I only wear a jacket if itโs absolutely torrential and freezing otherwise I canโt stand it! Iโll wear a tshirt without base layer down to 3-4 degrees. Hands and ears can go numb! But still I canโt wear gloves or a hat!
I'm always too hot I'll still be running in t-shirts when it's snowing Kev ๐
I enquired about jackets and thicker clothing at last Saturdays parkrun, a volunteer told me that I can leave any thicker clothes in colder weather in a special bag for that purpose while you run at parkrun. Once it gets a bit cooler, I will wear my longer but thinner jogging trousers, I will leave my jacket at the start with nothing important in the pockets, barcode, any money I have or keys to my home will be in a special pocket in my running belt. I may enquire about a running jacket for winter wear in the same sports shop that I bought my running shoes. ๐ ๐
Good question! Iโve been running in a sleeveless running top and shorts/running leggings but I think I will need to buy a long sleeve top at least! I also have a very thin running hoody which would act like a jacket layer but itโs ever so thin. I am keen to hear what others will be doing for the colder months! Not long to go now!
Lol no not long JaoJao I have running leggings and a jacket but Iโve only worn my jacket before and after running always get to hot and my leggings worn them 2 times when it was bad raining so I might wait and see what itโs like to run in who knows I might do better in the cold weather ๐xx
I have heard that we can expect to get faster in the colder weather so that is one thing to look forward to I suppose, more PBs maybe
I just had another thought come to mind but I will message you about that
That would be great if the cold gets us a PB ๐ok thank you JaoJao x
I have to wear gloves in the cold. I wear a long sleeved top - either thin or thicker. And sometimes a buff round my neck. The running jacket is great for strong wind or showers.
But I am a soft southerner.
For me it's a base layer AND a running jacket, also hat and gloves...I sometimes take off the jacket mid way through but never the gloves!
Iโm going to try and see on the day if I get cold which probably wonโt I get that warm itโs unreal ๐
I suppose you just try it out and see how you feel. My head and hands get much colder than the rest of me - quite odd really
Only difference for me between winter and summer is an extra layer or two. I still just wear shorts, I wear a T-Shirt and a long sleeve top. If itโs really cold and windy Iโll also wear a light wind proof high viz running jacket. Decathlon and Sports Direct have good deals. ALDI and LIDL too do some good winter running gear when their specials come up. No need to spend a fortune. Spend your money on running shoes.

Depends how cold it gets. I have winter specific running gear but live on the prairies in Canada where it gets very cold. Youโll figure out what you need. Keep your hands and head covered though (a light hat and light gloves may be enough), that helps a lot. I also cover my face but have to deal with frostbite concerns with my temperatures.
I have tight leggings and long sleeve top for when its cold but I would recommend gloves more than anything, make sure they're thin gloves though, if you don't wear them you are at risk of your hands drying out. It's best to see how you feel though as some people still wear shorts and t.shirt in the winter and I've seen people wear woolly hats but everyone's different.
Woolly hat, gloves, base layer, shirt, jogging tights of various thicknesses, and thin waterproof and wind proof jacket on really cold days. Jacket often comes off when I get into the run, but I sometimes need it for the post run walk home. I just tie it around my waist by knotting the sleeves when I don't need it. Can be really cold up here in winter; wind off the sea hurtling down from Siberia (but nothing like Canada Sask!).
My uniform for most winter runs was beanie hat with built in torch, t-shirt, long sleeve top, light hi viz vest, jogging bottoms and gloves. The thought of wearing all that now makes me feel faint! But I think we've got quite a while before we need to pack away our shorts... โ๏ธ๐
Great question, thanks. I get so hot though and already made the mistake of an extra layer one morning.
I ended up running up a very long private driveway taking my clothes off while running and typically it was the base layer I wanted to remove! What a sight I was . I only hope they donโt have cctv ๐๐.
I read that when it's dry, once running you will feel around 10 degrees warmer than the outside temperature and in the rain you'll feel about 5 degrees warmer so dress how you would for that. I dressed according to that last winter and it pretty much worked out for me. For when it was 5 degrees-ish then the long sleeved running top with holes to poke your thumb through, long sports trousers and headband for my poor ears came out, closer to zero and a light hoodie too. You'll soon figure it out, as I did adding the headband after a particularly painful ear ache for half hour after a cold and windy run...it was certainly invigorating ๐
I ran through last winter for the first time. A quick mental wander through my kit drawer and I have some long sleeve tech shirts, a very thin hi-vis jacket for runners which was brilliant in sleet, and a waterproof thin jacket that was supposed to be breathable but ended up being wetter inside than out. I feel thin gloves were essential and when it got below freezing I considered a Hygge band / Buff (which Iโve since bought in anticipation) to pull over my mouth and nose because the cold hits your lungs a bit until you get used to it - and light yourself up like a Christmas tree!!! I have flashing things for my shoes, head-torch, body torch, zip pull, clip on lights... all very handy! Shoes: you might find mesh-topped summer running shoes not ideal - trail shoes might be better for keeping the wet and snow out and gripping icy pavements. Itโs not too bad actually - I started to prefer winter running to summer heat for sure!
The key bit here is start out cold, so you don't overheat once you get going. Rule of thumb is to dress as if it was 15-20 degrees (F) warmer. So, if the temp is above freezing, shorts (perhaps with tights) and a long sleeve shirt with a light jacket should work. Light gloves and a beanie will help too. Below freezing or on windy or rainy day, it is more challenging, and you will need other gear.
This comes from 20yrs plus running in New England winters.
Thank you thatโs fantastic advice Iโve got leggings and a jacket summer ones not thermal but Iโm one of those that get ill if I get to hot so youโre advice is just what I will be doing and Iโm a bit crazy as I absolutely love running in the rain and the wind it doesnโt bother me in fact if itโs a warm day I donโt run as good as if it was cooler I do much better strange but true. Thatโs many years experience of running and I bet it gets really cold in New England much colder than it does in the uk Manchester happy running ๐๐๐
I enjoy rain and wind too - but cold/wt/wind is a hard combination - snow isn't the same as rain though (my favorite all time runs have been in light snow) - but being wet in windy cold weather can be a problem - so take some precautions then - don't wear cotton [something like a Patagonia Capilene base layer is perfect in these conditions], and get a rain repellant [not waterproof] jacket and you should be fine!!
I invested in a couple of long sleeved thermal tops last winter, plus gloves as my hands get really cold and then when itโs really cold a head band to keep my ears warm. In the winter I also wear long leggings. After my first summer of running when I really struggled with the heat Iโm really looking forward to cooler running conditions.
But actually I think you have to use layers according to how you feel. The wind and the rain/snow can really complicate things so I keep a record of each run and the weather and what I wore to help me gauge what I need on the day. I think itโs a case of see how you go. I use the idea of actual temp plus add 10c to help me think about what I would wear if I wasnโt running.
Right thank you Iโm going to play it by ear probably get a long sleeve T-shirt I already have leggings not thermal just normal ones but very comfy as if I get to hot Iโm in trouble I will get a pair of gloves and a running hat for when itโs freezing outside ๐๐
