Covid and running

Hello

Hope everyone is enjoying their runs

Could I ask how long after Covid did people get back to running ?

I had it pretty bad for a week two weeks ago but I’m still utterly wiped and exhausted and v frustrated

I went to a gentle Pilates class and needed a sleep after ....

do I just try and hit the road or give myself more time ? I don’t want to end up back at the start

Thanks in advance !

Fingers crossed your recovery continues!I found running after the jab was difficult enough. I haven't knowingly had COVID-19 so I can't comment. 😡

Personally, I would be super gentle with myself and go back to week 1, at least for the first run. And then see how I feel during the run and for a couple of days after. It’s only my personal opinion of course, but I would imagine that taken slowly and mindfully this programme would be a great way back to full health after COVID - but only if you really listen to your body. Rest well and run happy x

Short answer: more time. This wouldn't be an unusual trajectory for flu, let alone Covid. Another week minimum I would say.

"Went to a class" is not as gentle as you think - you've got to get there and back, 'social' time can be draining even if you enjoy it and have been craving it, and the temptation is always to do the whole class, so I am not at all surprised by the impact. (Not saying don't do it)

I will notoriously bang on about not using walking as a metric for whether you are ready to run. In this situation every other day or daily if you're up to it short *strolls* outside (combined with personal Pilates practice) strike me as extremely important this week and see how you get on with those.

Well...we are not medical experts and I don't think that there is any official definitive guidance on this as yet.But..I would agree with GoogleMe ...take more time.

Your body is telling you what to do.

Thus article may help..

...and the NHS has put out some guidelines on retuning to exercise.

One thing we can agree on, is that our body is our best guide, if we listen to it...and, that the runs wait...always!

As already mentioned we are not medical experts so can't give specific advice , however , it seems a lot of people have completely different experiences with covid so what worked for one may not work for another .I think definitely time is the best advice here !

Don't rush !

You say you don't want to end up back at the start , why not ! It's a great way to re condition yourself after a lay off and could be better than jumping back in trying to do too much too soon .

Whatever you decide , take your time and be kind to yourself

Thank you for all the lovely replies. I’m very encouraged It’s frustrating when you’ve shocked yourself by actually enjoying running and keeping it up 😂

I’m going to give it another week and listen to my body. GoogleMe I didn’t even think of the flu comparison so thank you for calming me down a bit !!

Happy running all !

I had COVID 19 s at the end of August and didn't run at all for about 3 weeks, I went back to week 4 of C25K and then just carried on from there. I was really exhausted in the beginning but I am getting back to full fitness slowly. I am doing 5k again now but I am Jeffing it (2mins running and 1 min walking). I am going to lengthen the running time gradually when I feel that I am ready but I am just really happy to be back out running again. Take it slowly and listen to your body and you will get there.
