Start to Run - W1L2 - treadmill

Hiya,

I am proud of myself, because I did my run as planned! Lesson 2 of the Start to Run app and again on the treadmill. I found my ideal setup. My small tablet fixed in a clamp on my photography tripod playing a treadmill Youtube video with nice scenery, my smartphone (not shown in the picture as it was taking said picture) in the treadmill cupholder playing a Spotify running playlist and the Start to Run app with bluetooth wireless earbuds so I can't pull my phone out of the cupholder anymore. Just perfect!

As you can see, the treadmill faces the hallway instead of the window (where there was actually some sun shining!). But I can't turn it around, I can't run with my back to the hallway. I would continuously feel as if there is someone behind me. Fears eh...

So as to the run. In the morning I actually felt in the mood for running, a nice chat with a senior colleague (videocall) cheered me up and I felt good. During the day though my 'want' to run diminished. But I crawled on the treadmill nevertheless. And... I enjoyed it!

This Start to Run program is really easy for me at the moment (thank goodness not all is lost) and it causes me to enjoy it. I just have to be careful not to want to go too fast (pace wise). I started the running parts at 6 km/h and cranked it up during the session to 6,5 km/h. But I felt that was stretching it a bit. Can't have myself stop enjoying it!

In the end I did about 1,67 km in 20 minutes. Fingers crossed that I will now continue!

Cheers, Evy

That sounds great Bs, you have nailed your setup very well I'd say. Do you want to be able to look out the window? If so how about the same approach as you are doing with your running.... Start small and move it round incrementally, a few degrees each move? A question for you...how do you record your treadmill running on hour phone. Or do you not bother? I'd like to on my garmin but it doesn't automatically do it, even tho treadmill running is included in its list of activities. It will record time but not distance.... I wonder if it's because I'm essentially running on the spot?? Anyway, well done and keep running.

Unfortunately I honestly don't think I will ever be able to run with my back to the hallway / door. Just the same as I can't sit with my back to a door or hallway. Even at work I fight to get a desk with my back to a window, facing the main space or door. It is a deeply grounded fear I fear 😆.

As for recording it, I have a footpod but it is not calibrated correctly as I run differently outside than on the treadmill. So I don't use it at the moment.

I just push the treadmill running option on my Garmin watch and it is more or less accurate I think. It give about 50 meters less than my treadmill over these 20 minutes. Knowing treadmills can exagerate, I leave the distance as Garmin says and don't calibrate it.

Do you run with your watcharm free? Because it needs the movement of running to record the distance. If you hold onto the handlebars, it won't register any distance.

Impressive solutions! Enjoy your new-style runs. Plus it’s great to hear that, unexpectedly, you’ve discovered a good base of fitness.

I do am amazed that running 2 minutes is absolutely no problem. This while when I started in November 2020 running 30 secs was HARD! I do find myself quickly tired when walking though. So some fitness is gone after all. I guess doing this Start to Run is a good ide ☺

Keep listening to your body and take your time. Some things will likely be initially harder, but will respond and improve quite fast. Other things can take longer. And keep posting!

Great job, even though you weren't feeling 100% like running you still got on with it and better still enjoyed it, that so good to read.

It's good to see your set up, being able to clamp your tablet to the treadmill is a great idea. Do you watch different videos each time?My sons treadmill that I can use is in his garage and looks at the doorway with the window is on my left the first time I tried running on it I kept trying to look outside and got really unbalanced and was in danger of falling into a wheelbarrow 😂

I have 2 or 3 possible channels on YouTube with treadmill movies, but so far I have only used 1 channel. It is called 'Treadmill TV' and for my 2 runs I used 2 different movies. I find it nice to look at, 1 was around a lake and another through a forest.

I also have to keep looking forward (to the tablet now) or I go all directions on my treadmill. Yesterday I had to blow my nose and my handkerchief suddenly flapped before my eyes. Oh my, I had to grab a handhold to stay upright 😂

Well done Evy !Great that you have a plan for getting back into it.

And it seems you have a good setup that works for you !

(I wouldn't mind a treadmill) 🤔

Should you buy a treadmill, I'd suggest to go a little bit more expensive. Now mine was a gift from my parents, but back in the day I also did not know about what was possible in a treadmill. But now a link with Bluetooth or something to link with a computer / tablet would be nice to use Zwift and run against others online. Also, I'd love to be able to set my own speeds in buttons, instead of having fixed speeds. Don't know if that is possible though. Anyhow, I am happy I have my treadmill, so nothing against it.
