My running has taken a bit of a nose-dive over the past month or so due to work, and I've been lucky to complete 2 x 5k's a week. They haven't been easy... I've felt puffed, heavy and achy.
So yesterday evening I went out with my usual nerves expecting to struggle through a 5-6k. But for some reason when I got to 5k I felt like I still had loads of energy in my tank, so thought I'd run a little further. By the time I had completed 7.5k I was running past my front door and felt I could manage a bit more. I kept going and felt great, so by 9k I thought 'I can do this....I can run my first 10k'. And I did! Wow - what an unexpected surprise!
I really don't understand how that happened, but here are some thoughts:
- I hadn't run for 7 days, so my body was rested
- It was 6pm and I'd only eaten some fruit and a bowl of porridge all day
- My last run was a 5k speed run, which really pushed me
- I had drunk half a bottle of wine the night before!
- My kids were at home with their friends and I wanted to arrive back feeling proud
It's definitely boosted my confidence, and just goes to show that if you run regularly, however short or slow, as a runner you can achieve things beyond belief!
Happy weekend runners!

Congratulations! Great to see you triumph over the self-doubts at the start. I’ve noticed the benefits of rest periods (intended or not) although your other factors could well be players!
Well done you keep it up 👏👏 think distance not speed that's how I get through my runs, I try and get two 10ks and a 5k a week if I can If work doesn't get in the way..😀
Well done and congratulations on your first 10K 🎈🎊🎉💪 it’s always a very special moment and a fab achievement! I’m sure your kids are proud as anything of you 🙂 even if they don't admit it 🙃
That looks a lovely route, I use to live in Putney so know that part of London fairly well. I’d love to run there now, so much to see.
Happy running to you, a running future is yours for the taking 🙂
