Yesterday I went out for a planned 5k run. It was drizzling as I left home but had been raining heavily overnight so I decided to avoid the country park as I thought it would be really muddy. I decided I would run the alternative route from home taking the roads.
I was planning a slow run and wasn't going to concern myself with pace, heartrate etc. I just wanted to run and listen to what my body was saying. Coming to the end of the 5k I felt great so thought I would carry on for a while. I had achieved 7.5k on Sunday so I knew I could carry on a bit further.
At 55 mins I thought why not make it to 60 mins. At 60 mins I checked Strava to find I was at 9k and still felt good. So the competitiveness side of me kicked in and told me to try for the 10k. Why not I thought! My legs felt ok, just starting to tire a little but otherwise I felt good.
I thought I would run into the country park as I knew the first part of the path was about 500m, so there and back would make it to 10k. As strava sometimes underestimates distance I carried on a bit longer. After 1 hour and 7 mins I had achieved the 10k. What a great feeling. Even better for being unexpected.
Somehow I even managed to get some PBs as well. I really don't know how that happened as I thought I was a lot slower than usual. My last 1k was the fastest of all, despite my legs feeling tired at the end. I am really pleased and even though it was yesterday I still have a huge smile on my face. I never thought I would get to that distance in such a short pace of time.
My colleague is now trying to persuade me to enter a 5k race. I'm not sure about this as I have never ran with anyone before. The race isn't until November so I have time to think about it.
Sorry for the long post.
Happy running everyone
