It's been a while since I last posted something, so I thought I'd give a small update of what has been going on.
Sunday 02/05: ran 7,19 km in 60 minutes, fastest I have done so far. But after the run my left calve felt a bit sore. Tried to massage it with a massage ball, but didn't help. The soreness seemed to have gone after 2 days though and wasn't all too bad in any case. Just a bit of stiffness.
Wednesday 05/05: ran 3,39 km in 30 minutes. No pain in the calve at all, run went smoothly.
Friday 07/05: decided to do my long run today, as I was getting my second Covid shot on Saturday. From the start I had a bit of pain from the Piriformis muscle and/or the Ischeas nerve (had a serious issue with it last year - had to walk with crutches even), but bit through it. But at about 45 minutes my left calve started aching again and seriously this time. Had to cut my run short at 50 minutes (5,96 km) because of the pain. That evening the Piriformis muscle and/or the Ischeas nerve decided the calve wasn't enough and I needed a heavy reminder that they can be bitches if they want to.
Saturday 08/05: got my second Covid shot and did a very short walk. The calve is still tender and aches a bit when walking. Piri/Ischeas was ok again.
Only got a sore arm (inside and outside) and painful armpit-glands whichi is apparently a common side-effect of Moderna. No ilness, no tiredness, besides the arm all is ok and even that will be gone in 1 or 2 days I guess.
Since Friday evening I rub Voltaren gel on the calve in the morning and the evening and I have let my leg rest. The Piri/Ischeas let itself be known again yesterday (Monday), but today it is silent again. The calve hasn't given a peep since Saturday evening, so I think it's just an overload / strain and not a serious injury.
On Thursday I have a day off and I decided to try a short and slow run of 10 minutes (about 1 km) to see what the calve says. The calve will have had 6 days of rest then and if all ok, I will try a 30 minute run during the weekend. In the week that follows I will also keep to 30 minute runs. No long run until the weekend of the 22nd, if all goes well.
Hope all goes well with your pesky calf .. they are a real pain .. I know and you have my sympathy! I thought mine was better but itโs not so Iโm going to give it another week but keep power walking in the meantime as that is painless .. good luck ๐๐โโ๏ธ๐
G'luck on the 2nd shot, fingers crossed for no side-effects!
I must admit I did not go to the doctor last year with my Piri/Ischeas problem. I Googled it and my mother has had it in the past once and she recognized the symptoms. I guess it would need an RX or scan to see if the nerve is blocked or inflamed or if it is in fact the Piriformis that is strained and with Covid, I didn't feel like bugging the medical staff. It passed after a while, so all good. Only it sometimes bugs me again for a day to disappear again the day after, really weird. Next time I have to be with my regular doctor, I'll ask her what to do next time it plays up again.
Very interesting, I have always thought I had Ischeas (blockage or inflammation of the sciatic nerve). But it might be that it is 'just' my piriformis muscle being too tense which presses on the sciatic nerve, giving that pain. And most probably like the guy says, it's a fact of some other muscles not getting activated well enough. I indeed shuffle when I run, keeping my feet very low to the ground and thus not engaging those specific muscles (forgot the name) that help the piriformis to not tense. Will have to look further into this! Thanks!
Well done on your 60 min run. Did you claim your graduation 60 mins .๐๐think itโs my piriformis or back donโt know what but it tightens up under my leg and back and sore hip and groin tightness. Canโt seem to shift it. Worse still plantar fasciitis back ๐ฉ feet sore. Havenโt run for 2 weeks just walking with this hip thing . Glad your getting better with your jag. I probably should rest like you but thought walking would be ok. ๐
Walking is never considered as bad when you have some kind of injury, I think. But I don't come outside often, besides for running. I'm a lazy couch potato ๐คฃ. I prefer hanging in my couch with my crochet project or with a good book. Shame on me!!
Hi Evy, good to hear from you! Well done on your 2nd May run, but Iโm sorry to hear about the calf. Mines been acting up too so I bought some calf compression thingies and so far so good, although I did rest it too. Thatโs great you had your 2nd vaccine, and with 6 days of rest, hopefully youโll be feeling brand new. ๐๐๐ผ๐โโ๏ธ๐๐
Thanks and yeah, I'll see tomorrow how it goes. A bit anxious, I really hope the calf will be good. And I also hope the weather will be good, not in the mood to run on the treadmill.
