Quick report/update...... I did it, I did it, I did it! 8K’s in the bag, thank you very much!
I couldn’t drive to my riverside retreat tonight so decided to run around my town. I had a rough idea of the route that I’d need and only had to add 1 loop and a small bit of back / forth at the end.
Calves calmed down after some initial grumbles, but the cramp in my right foot returned again with a vengeance! I only get this with distances over 5/6k and have started to roll the base of my foot with a tennis ball.
Had to do a few short stops to massage / wiggle toes around and managed to run it out towards the end and one during when I had to navigate some bushes and and fence to find the path I thought was there lol!!
Overall, very pleased. Had some niggles / pain but all in all it was ok for my first ever run around my town.

Oh yes! Still a little in awe of the whole thing. At the start of the year I was still worried if my knee would hold up after the surgery, but now I don't even think about it!!
8k for me yesterday morning - feels like we’re nearly there now, doesn’t it? 😊 I’m already feeling I might go for the shorter plan and not repeat the 8&9k weeks - would give me the option of a 10k local fun run mid Sept, with possibly 2x 10ks under my belt before it... Not things I thought you’d hear me say a few weeks ago! 😂😃
I said that before yesterday’s 8k, UpTheStanley , but am now split. I’m blaming Jay66UK for giving me the idea! 😂😂
From spotting other comments, it does sound as if the 10K plan used to be a 6 week one without the repeats, a number of recent graduates seemed to shorten weeks without issues, and adding 1k a week seems to fit safely in the 10% increase per week rule... And ju-ju- says the plan is fairly flexible.
I’m not brave enough to enter even a fun run before trying out the distance a couple of times first...😳
I'm with Jay66UK as well.... I could have actually gone a bit further, but my right foot was not playing nicely lol. I'm already planning on 9k next Wednesday.... but I'll be doing a lot of ball rolling on my feet before that! lol.
But yes Marie, I think you are right, we all know what our bodies are saying, and essentially each 10% increase comes from the confidence gained from the last run I guess!
You’ll fly round it Mike! My 7k last week was only just slower (total time)..... just remember to hydrate before hand! I was gasping at the end lol.... (but I hate carrying bottles!)
Yeah it's funny how that happens - my 7k was only 2 minutes slower than my 6k the week before. Got myself one of those marathon vests so I can carry a bottle 💦🏃🏻♂️🏃🏻♂️
Yay! Well done on the 8k. Sorry to hear about the cramp though - that sounds really annoying. I hope the tennis ball helps. I had some pain in my left foot for 3 weeks or so while doing the C25K and I was scared it was plantar fasciitis, so just rolled my foot on a tin of beans whenever I was sat down. It seemed to do the trick. Calf stretches might help too.
Just read this as have been away with 3 kids this week so kept busy! Managed to keep running though 😆. See you’re quite local to me too. Great job though. I remember when 8 min was an achievement and it wasn’t too long ago!!
