Using up this years annual leave I find myself with a few days off yay 😀

Rest and relaxation and lots of water are on the menu, woke this morning tired so oh how lovely we stayed put drank tea in bed went back to sleep, woke again ate brunch and went back to sleep

Around lunch time we started to discuss a walk and where we would go,

“Lancing Ring, Cissbury Ring or Chanctonbury ring?” I asked Willow said he’d never heard of the last one, so off we went

When we parked Willow looked upwards and said a word I can’t write here so off we walked, upwards and upwards, got a little lost so there was a bit upping and downing when we ran out of track and it was too steep

Kept going and there it was, a clump of trees on top of the world 🌍

Beautiful, listening to birdsong and glimpsing many different birds, we stopped to watch 3 buzzards above

We had walked up, round the ring of beech trees, commented on how hazy it is looking across the South Downs and started down again where we just couldn’t help ourselves and ran, because of the steepness and trees, roots, slipperiness of damp chalk and stones we took Japanese slow running to its limit and before long were wearing the biggest grins

Back at the car and we’d covered 5.91k

Tomorrow is run day so probably be a very slow plod somewhere very flat

Happy running everyone

I think there’s rain coming but we’ve had a good run of sunny days

What a wonderful day out. I love the sound of your morning sleeping and eating ☕😴

I'm pretty sure I've been to one of those rings a few years ago when I was on holiday, amazing views.

Enjoy the rest of your leave 😊

Yes you really do

What a lovely day for your well deserved time off, love your joyful downhill slow running, what fun 🤗

We are terrified of tripping over and having to carry the other back to the car but just can’t resist lol

That sounds absolutely glorious Sola. What a view from the top. It’s given me a hankering to head on up to the top of The Downs too. The weather really was wonderful today. It’s left me with a very rosy face after my long dog walk this morning and afternoon spent working in the garden. I’m quite sure you are both rosy-faced too 😊☀️

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to

Not as rosy faced than after a long run but it’s good to march up the hills

What a lovely day off...a lazy start, followed by a walk up that blankety blank hill...and such gorgeous views at the top.

I can just see those buzzards gliding on the thermals...

...and then a mad (ish) run down hill! Brilliant!🥰

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to LottieMW

Yeah we are nuts to run down and we’re very careful, but it’s made us realise we need to go up hills at least once a week, it’ll give us more muscles to run further

LottieMW profile image

The one saving grace of lockdown is that it forced me to go out and run inclines...😫

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to LottieMW

Ha ha, in the beginning we decided to walk to the downs, 15 minutes then a steep uphill narrow lane then onto the downs and blow me loads of people had the same idea so we ran home lol but we enjoy walking the steep hills and love running back down

I think that running downhill on my 60 minute run was what aggravated my niggly right knee...🤨

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to LottieMW

Yes, downhill is hard on knees, Willow has to be careful not to go too fast or his suffers

What a lovely day you have had! A lovely lie in and a wonderful walk in the sunshine to a new place, followed by a nice downhill run. It looks beautiful there.

I was half expecting you to say you embraced your inner 6 year old and rolyploy-ed down that grassy hill 😁

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Birdlady64

I wanted to go down the grassy bank and may have rolled down but it disappeared and was really steep and my sensible Willow said looking forward to retirement in a wheelchair wouldn’t be much fun, I forget because he’s a bit of a hippy how sensible sometimes

I thought my boss hadn’t approved my leave and she was off last week so it’s a nice surprise to compromise and have 3 days and then a couple more first week in April

I love finding hidden gems! I found one not far from me in the summer. To think I’ve lived here since age 4 and never went before 😍

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Tasha99

Yes it is, we have been trying different places even if not so much running happens because the seafront and parks are full of people not meeting their friends

What a view! And that sounds great, running downhill is the ultimate treat!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Lookslikejames

Many years ago my sister stayed and did a circular run around the downs i walked to the top of the hill to meet her and ran back down with her, it was great but when i got up the next morning my quads hurt so much i had to hang onto something to sit down, first time we climbed the same hill and ran down I remembered that then was amazed there was no pain next day, just goes to show all this running and daily squats has made a huge difference and I’m about 20 years older too

Lookslikejames profile image
LookslikejamesGraduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

Haha I know that feeling well, my first run after coming back from my injury, the next day was brutal! Couldn’t get down the stairs or sit down! It’s amazing how quickly the conditioning comes back though.

When lockdown is over I’d like to have a go at that hill. I can’t wait to get out to some new places.

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Lookslikejames

Yes, it’s a good hill steep but not as long as Box Hill which is too far away, hopefully by summer we will be able to travel as far as we want in this country at least

Oh how lovely to have some days off. I definitely approve of the lazy morning 🛌 😴 I love those! The walk sounds challenging but worth it at the top 🌳 🌳.

Happy running day too. Enjoy the rest of your break 😊

What a fabulous view Sola! A steep path up but definitely worth it! Enjoy your run today and your few days off - I reckon you deserve them after all you’ve done in the last year!

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Oldgirlruns

Thank you so much, it was amazing and we’d never been up for here before

I really did enjoy my run today and Willow enjoyed a shorter run and sit in car, his knee is a little delicate but nothing a bit of rest and stretch won’t cure

Funnily enough I nearly did Lancing Ring on Sunday.

Where did you start? My Canicross friends introduced me to DEMON start to a route to Chanctonbury Ring at the beginning of last year. It’s practically vertical 🥵

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to Maddee_6333

Sounds like the same place it was practically virtical in places and really steep until we left the woods near the top

Hi Sola,

Sorry I am late replying to this post.

That is great that you have a few well deserved days off as annual leave.

What a lovely morning and great to be able to go back to bed and sleep.

What a wonderful walk/climb such a beautiful view. lol what great fun running down the hill!

What a lovely day you both had x

My boss went on holiday the week before and hadn’t authorised my leave, we discussed it on monday and I got a lecture about having a lot left, it’s been a weird year so she said have these three days off and a couple more days off first week in April so it was a lovely surprise

I’m determined to run or walk at least 5k every day i’m not at work

9weeks2Run profile image
9weeks2RunGraduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

That is so lovely that you have those days off to look forward too.

That is a brilliant goal.

We’ve fell short of our targets through winter, how are you doing? Covid takes its time to let you get back to the way you were before

9weeks2Run profile image
9weeks2RunGraduate10 in reply to SueAppleRun

I am OK finding it difficult being back at work with the fatigue but doing my best. Missing running had started making a few steps back but on Sunday had some chest tightness. It did feel cold and I think I was just too fatigued from working the day before but will keep on with the walking. X

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to 9weeks2Run

Rest, getting back to work will take it out of you, get as much sleep as you can for a while and keep the walks short, your work is full on and you need to be kind to you xx

Thank you so much Sola. Take care xxx

speaking as a northerner, could you please explain why southerners call hills "downs" and not "ups"???????😁

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to

I haven’t a clue, I may even look it up now lol

SueAppleRun profile image
SueAppleRunGraduate1060minGraduate in reply to SueAppleRun

It comes from the Old English word dun with a squiggle over the u which means hill

in reply to SueAppleRun

Thank you , I have wondered about that for years, and now I know!!!
