My running has been a little irratic over the past month since running my first 10k, but I have spent the time trying a few new things. I have been experimenting with running in zones, away from zombies using the Zombies, Run app (pretty atmospheric in the murky and misty woods where I do my trail runs), but my distances have hovered at or just above 5k. I haven't been out as frequently as I should, as decorating seems to have taken over my life for the last 10 days.
There is however, now a glimmer of light at the end of the decorating tunnel, so I decided to set myself a new challenge and put the training plans on my Garmin watch to good use. This evening I set off on a short benchmark run to kick start my training with Coach Jeff Galloway - I love his laid-back calming voice, it makes me feel that he thinks I can do anything 😌 . I am using his intermediate 10k plan which he says can also be used to improve pace and running form for those who have already run 10k, which is just what I would like to do.
I have done the homework Geoff has set me - watching the videos that explain what is coming up during my next session. My next run is Tuesday, when Jeff will be putting me through my paces with Cadence Drills, Acceleration-Glider Drills and a Magic Mile. Sounds interesting....
Keep safe everyone; whether you are recovery running, resting on the IC, trying something new, doing the Magic Plans or your own thing in your own way - happy running 🏃♀️😃.
Nice to see you posting DD. My running has been ‘pants’ . It’s hard to get motivated in this gloomy grey weather. Due to run 5k tomorrow and I think I am going to stay at that distance for a while. Found the 10k so mind bogglingly exhausting. Happy training times!
Hi Timotea. The weather’s been awful and its not been enticing me to get out either. The 10k definitely takes it out of you. I’m in awe of those who’ve recently done their first 10ks and gone on to repeat it two or three times already. You have gorgeous puppies as a very worthy distraction at the moment. I hope they’re all doing well 🐶 🐾 💕
I'm really intrigued about Acceleration Glider Drills 🤔 It sounds like you are going flying rather than running 😂I'm glad you can see the light at the end of the decorating tunnel. In the end you just want to be able to put the paint brushes away, get the house straight and get your life back.
I look forward to reading your training with Geoff 😊
Brilliant to read Delly-dot, 😍This is why we love running so much, it never gets boring does it, so many new and interesting things to try...I didn't know Geoff Galloway has guided runs so that's something new for me to try later. For now I'm getting back to 30 mins on the c25k plan, then after some consolidation I think I will have a go at the timed version of the Magic 10 plan, I have used the distance one many times, I may even pop the zombiesrun! app back on for some runs. So exciting to be going out running again after my long time out.
So good to hear that your running is going well. I did the timed version of the Magic Plan before doing the distance and I really enjoyed it.
I’m not sure how much Geoff will be talking to me during my runs, as I have only done the benchmark run so far, but his short video clips between runs are helpful. I’ll let you know how it goes. 😊
Sounds like you've got it sorted. Well done. 👏👏👏I have terrible trouble following plans. I start off with good intentions, but once I'm out there, my legs seem to take over and do whatever they like (and they seem to like medium paced 10ks).
I've given myself a good talking to and I've decided to go back to weekly basics: one short 5k with sprints, one 5k with hills and one long slow run, gradually increasing my distance to try to get to a half marathon. It worked getting me from 5k to 10k. It's after that I seemed to get a bit lost.
Hi Speedy. It sounds like you have a good plan as well. My aim is to get back to 10k but it looks like this plan will have a bit of variety to it and something to learn along the way. I admire you for your HM goal - what a fantastic achievement that will be 😊.
Ooooh, a new training plan! That sounds great. I haven't jumped in yet myself but would love to hear how you get on with it. Once I've got my life a little more sorted I'm going to try one of the heart zone training plans from the Garmin connect website.
I didn’t know that a Garmin can feature a Galloway plan - good to know! I’ve did a walk / run session yesterday (30 seconds walking and 75 seconds running) for 8km yesterday and felt great. Good luck with the plan. Please keep us posted!
There are three different coaches available to chose from, with their own plans to get you to the same goal. I chose Geoff because I'd heard him mentioned on here, but I love his calming voice! It sounds like he has faith in me, even when I might doubt it 😊.
Sounds interesting! I've cut my distance too and have done mostly 5ks with just x2 6ks to make me feel like I've still got it! Truth is my toes just need a break. That and the dark mornings means I have to sacrifice my run for working over lunchtime (in the day I work flexibly while looking after my 1 year old. When he naps I work or run) I do miss the long slow drags. I took your advice though and have done x3 zombie missions. My 7 year old joins me for the first k or so of those which is fun.
You are doing well. It is difficult to find time for the longer runs at this time of year. I was caught by surprise when my motivation dropped so quickly after doing my 10k, but I had a lot going on at the time so I have forgiven myself and accepted that on my worst weeks I got out once, but on my best I managed three runs. I'm glad to read you and your son tried out the zombie runs! They add a bit of fun and variety, although I'm not sure how they will work with Geoff's training plan. Happy running to your and your apprentice 😊.
Decorating can rather take over your life can't it, especially when you can't find anything!I've been reading a lot of posts about this Jeff Galloway plan. I hope you find it beneficial - others seem to think it's a good system. Think I would find it too complicated, but everyone to their own! I'm sure you'll be knocking out longer runs again very soon! 😊
Yey - I’ve also just started with Jeff, but on his half marathon plan over 21 weeks ! But sounds like the same methods. I’ve just finished week 2 and can see I have the ‘magic half mile’ to look forward to next week ! The cadence drills are fun but I can’t get my head around the point of the ‘acceleration-glider’ but I’m happy to play along !! Enjoy !!
Glad to hear your motivation is back Delly, peaks and troughs seem to be the nature of this running game. I’ll be really interested to hear more about how you like the HM plan with Geoff. I went on a couple of dates with him recently but he wasn’t my type, 🤣 he didn’t breathe a word, just gave me tiny writing to read on my watch which I can’t see with my distance glasses on and then wanted me to go on exactly the same date again with no sign of a magic mile. I do hope he treats you better 😉 I dumped him before the end of week 2 and have now hooked up with Amy instead 😁 . I’m not sure if these plans will work for me but definitely worth exploring.
