Feeling sorry for myself

So graduated in the middle of August on C25K & recently managed to graduate to 10K.

On Monday after being really super careful I tested positive for Covid 19.

I’m worried that this is going to undo all the good work that I’ve achieved & really feeling down as cannot (and should not) do any form of exercise for apparently 2 weeks.

Apparently the body needs complete rest.

How did anyone else cope with this & did you feel down about it?

I'm so sorry to hear that, such worrying news. As far as I've read, you can take 2 weeks off running without losing fitness, and it can even be good for your muscles to have a bit of a break. It's just a shame that it has to be because of covid 😔 Wishing you a smooth and speedy recovery 🤗🦋🌷

So sorry to hear that and really hope you feel better quickly! I'm sure you won't suffer for a well-earned rest. Perhaps enjoy a little bit of gentle stretching at home if you're feeling up to it. Think how quickly you went from 5k to 10k! The running will be waiting for you and I'm sure you will build up again very quickly. Take care!

So sorry to hear this! Maybe you can take this time to work on some flexibility with stretching? Are you allowed to do some exercises that won’t get your heart rate up? Like daily squats and lunges, work on balancing on one leg to keep your ankles strong, calf lifts etc?

I have read many times, and also have been told directly from a friend who is an elite cross country runner (won state championships in high school, ran on her college cross country team), that 2 weeks is about the dividing line at which fitness maintains/starts to decline. I myself had to take 2 weeks off after a minor surgical procedure. I came back to the same point in my Magic Plan without any problems at all.

Don’t worry about losing anything, just take this time to heal! I hope your symptoms remain mild!

Sorry to hear this and I do wish you a speedy recovery - but yes, your body needs to conserve energy at the moment to fight off the virus.

Just to add to the comments above - many runners have to take far more time off than two weeks...and we still get back to it! Yes, you may have to build up a little again but believe me, the fitness soon returns.

I have been out for 3 months + on a couple of occasions over the past few years and I just took a step back and built back up - it's what we do!

Fingers crossed that you can get back out there soon.🙂

Sorry to hear this. Take care of yourself and like the others say, the runs will still be waiting for you when you've recovered. Don't be tempted too get back out too soon or you'll set back your recovery. You'll be back in no time.

Sorry to hear this. You can take comfort from the fact that the fitness you've built up over the months is going to help you fight the virus.

Rest and take all the professional advice you've been given. In the end it will be the quickest way to getting back out there.

I had a cold a few weeks ago and tried to keep running, I felt awful, I struggled to even do 3k and was constantly worried not running every other day would impact my fitness, in the end I admitted defeat and rested a week, to run a personal best on my first run back, then complete a 10k 2 weeks later, which I was training for, running whilst ill was horrible, worrying I was undoing all my hard work by resting wasn't great either, but after feeling better I was rested and my muscles were stronger, so much so I now do not worry if I miss a few days. Yes, I had it in April, and felt dreadful, I did post about my first run after.

The important thing at the moment is to rest, get better. Try to eat and drink well.

You can't really rush this.

I realise we are all different, but wondered how long it was before you were able to start running again?

About 2 weeks, in April you only had to isolate for 7 days!. I was in bed for 7, went for few gentle walks for a few days and then thought I would do a tester run.

Like you say we're all different.

I swear my running fitness helped me though. Several of my colleagues were tested positive the same week, they took quite a bit longer to recover.

It's a strange virus though, I still get episodes of breathlessness, or times when I am aware that I am breathing if you understand what I mean.

Sorry to hear you’ve tested positive but my thought when I was reading your post was you were in the best physical place to get it (hope this makes sense, I’d never want anyone to get it but it’s hit you when you were on a physical peak). Wishing you a speedy recovery x
