OMG!! 😱 What On Earth Have I Just Gone and Done????

Birdlady64 profile image

In a moment of total madness, and in response to an email from parkrun, I've only just gone and signed up for the virtual 2020 Vitality London 10,000😱

It seems that "all" I have to do is complete a 10K run on the route of my choice anytime during the October half-term – from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November.

Now, if everything goes smoothly, these dates just happen to coincidence nicely with my final week of the Magic 10 Plan 😁. So I guess I'm publicly holding myself to account here.

I'm also slightly terrified about what I've just done 😰

Good for you. That should keep you motivated. I'm just thinking of starting to get up to a 10k but not sure how I'd fit the runs in with the dark evenings coming & living in the middle of nowhere. πŸ™„

Goodluck with the challenge

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Pookypal

Yes it's a bit of a challenge.

I'm trying to reserve the long runs for weekends when I have more time, but still need to consider family commitments

Good luck with your running, whatever you decide to do

Haha, brilliant πŸ˜‚

I think that's great , and as you say, if it coincides with the plan then all well and good !

You will smash it πŸ‘πŸ˜

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Instructor57

Hmm yes - or it will smash me😁

Need to think about maybe fundraising for a worthy cause. Seems a bit shallow if it's just for personal gratification

AlMorr profile image

I don't see any problem with that Birdlady64, no need to be terrified, by the time you have completed the Ju Ju's Magic 10 plan you will be ready to run that Virtual Vitality London 10,000 (10K) on a route of your choice sometime during the last week of October

Earlier this year in May I changed my longer running day from Wednesday to Monday, it was on the 25th May to take part and run something similar virtually with a group of Graduate10 people on this forum, my time that day was 73.21, good luck to you for that runπŸƒπŸΎπŸ‘

Birdlady64 profile image

Thank you Al

I'm sure my time will be nowhere near that but it will make for a special graduation run for sure

What a lovely way to mark achieving 10k.

I have to do it now, don't I?

Well done, what an amazing event to aim for. Relax, continue with your running then enjoy your 10k. Happy running πŸ€—

Aw thank you πŸ€—

It will make for a graduation run to remember that's for sure

Go for it! I think there is a mystique about 10k. The idea of running that far frightened me a bit initially! When I did my first 10k I was a bit frightened about having done it!

You are nearly there!

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Roxdog

Thanks for the encouragement!

I know in myself that 10k is doable. I just wanted to do it slowly and hopefully avoid the IC. Now I have put the pressure on myself again 🀦

That’s terrific, I’m very glad to have more company in doing just the same. Moment of madness, nah!, you know you want to get that bling and the T-shirt just as much as I do 🀣 ...we are going to do this πŸ˜†πŸ€—

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to

Yep - I just wanted the T-shirt 😁

Glad to know I'm not the only crazy one on here.

You are my virtual run buddy now!😁

in reply to Birdlady64

Lovely, we will smash it in style Yay 😁

Good luck! πŸ€

I'm nowhere near that level yet, but you will be.

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to nowster

Thank you!

I'm sure you will be running 10k yourself before long if the recovery continues the way it has been. That is if you decide you want to run longer of course.

I'm not fast, but plodding slowly away for a while is something I can do reasonably ok. My swimming is a bit the same in fact

nowster profile image
nowsterGraduate10 in reply to Birdlady64

I do wish to run longer, both distance and duration. I know it'll come, but just not as fast as I'd anticipated when nearing the end of C25K. The enforced break has stopped me "pushing" as hard.

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to nowster

Maybe it's a blessing in disguise, if you know what I mean...

You will come back stronger and wiser I am sure

Tillybeach profile image

You will have no problem Birdlady64, well on track!

I have had to stop all running for 7 days so far as full of cold and chesty cough. Hopefully be able to start again later next week. wk7 of the plan. Hopefully 10k around the same time!

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Tillybeach

Hope your cold is better soon. There seems to be a lot of that sort of thing around right now. I blame it on the kids going back to school!

What a perfect way to keep that motivation up throughout the month. To take the terrors away, right now you could do a run/walk that would take you to 10k and beyond... so you will complete the event and earn your bling. Have fun training up to this... you can do it... we are all here to cheer you along.

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to UnfitNoMore

Thank you! Encouraging as ever. Yes you are right of course, I could run/walk that right now. I should post this on the October Quest

Cmoi profile image
CmoiGraduate10

You'll be just fine ! :) You've already run 8k, so 10k is absolutely do-able.

Fwiw I'm still using the technique I used during C25K, which is reframing runs and breaking them down into stuff I know I can do. For example, instead of seeing 10k as 25% further than 8k, which was frankly scary for little old me, I decided that once I'd got to 8k I could perfectly well run for another few minutes to take me to 9k. Then at 9k, I just told myself it'd be a shame to stop, when I'd only got few minutes more to do to hit 10k. And bingo, it worked!

Happy running!

Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Cmoi

That logic rocks!

Well done Birdlady, there are quite a few of us who originally signed up for the vitality 10000 in London in May. All cancelled, so we’ll be doing the virtual run at the end of the month. It’s great that they will be sending us a race number so everyone will know we are doing something special.

Juju will get you there, no problem πŸ˜‰

Birdlady64 profile image
Birdlady64Graduate10 in reply to Lifebeginsat

Fantastic!

I'm sure you will be able to get there. I feel a bit sniffly myself the last 2 days but I am determined to get out for my 5k today at some point despite the rain.

We will smash it together!πŸ’ͺ

Virtually of course 😁

Lifebeginsat profile image

Always good to feel like we're in it together. I've been mildly unwell for 2 weeks and it's not shifting! It's v frustrating. But I got out for my 4k this morning with minimal rain. Next week is the first 9 k so am hoping to be feeling much better. I've decided I'll do the 10,000 even if I end up walking some of it!😁

EThomas profile image

I’ve entered that one too, it’ll be my first ever medal for running πŸ€— you’ll be fine, just pace yourself and don’t set off too quickly. There’s a 10k run on the Nike Run Club app, I’ve used it a few times....Coach Bennett will keep you company and get you through it.....Good Luck.. see you at the finish lineπŸ‘

You'll be fine! Just think of the fish & chips (& maybe ice cream) on the virtual bus home 😁😁

Well Birdlady64 you’ve sure started something now, we’ll have a whole coach load virtually wheeling it up to London and there I was thinking it’s just mad little old me 🀣🀣🀣🀣 ... now they’ll be sandwiches and singing on the bus and all, and fish and chips on the way home, it’s such a long time since I’ve been on such an outing it’s soooooo exciting πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈπŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Me too!! πŸ˜πŸƒβ€β™€οΈ I did my 3rd 10k this morning with a new PB, saw your post and thought why not??!! It will be my first race and medal too, even if it is a virtual one. Plus it’s my 54th birthday that week and I need something to do on my week off work 😁

Ha! I wouldn’t say seasoned, just a bit more confident. Too many injuries and starting at the beginning again. .I actually enjoy the longer more steady paced runs. Oh and PB was 1:06.20 😊 Weird thing is I’m doing a Garmin 5k timed plan work out which is tough but it is giving me faster 10k runs...

Good Lord indeed! It was definitely a moment of utter madness - and just look what I have started here!!!!

Definitely fish and chips all round. Although the fish and chips here at home will be nothing like the fish and chips I had on holiday in Abersoch. The were to die for! πŸ˜‹

One advantage of a virtual race is there’s no cut off time so you can take it easy with no fear of being picked up by the sweeper bus. So relax and enjoy πŸ‘

Birdlady64 profile image
