So I decided to use the Speed podcast for my short 2.5k run of week 1 of the 10k magic plan this evening. I also decided to run a circular route on main roads for the first time instead of my usual off road routes.
I was on my warm up walk, Laura's "1, 2,3,4 1,2,3,4" ringing in my ears when a car came past, windows right down, and a young guy probably early 20s leaning right out of the window, gesticulating madly. Turns out he was gesticulating at me. I didn't quite catch what he said as the car past me, but it was definitely some misogynistic comment about "shouldn't I be running and not walking".
I shrugged it off at the time, but thinking back now but is really annoying me 😤😡😠
This is the first time since starting C25K in April that I've experienced anything like this. What is wrong with people?
On the plus side I enjoyed the intervals on my run today, but it does feel like a bit of a cheat with such a short run.

Oh dear how nasty. It's easy to say just ignore this type of thing, but it can be upsetting and is just so rude.
Glad you enjoyed the interval run. I used that podcast a few times a while ago, but couldn't deal with the music I'm afraid! Well done! I expect the nasty person spends his life on the couch and as you say, is a misogynist- no hope there!
What a shame, can't believe there are such horrible sad people out there. Hope they didn't upset you too much. Agree it's a really short run, when I did it last week i carried o n to 4k then regretted it as I think I tried too hard and was stuffed at the end!!
I agree they are very sad people. I think what shocked me was to see that attitude from such a young man.
I pondered running on a bit but decided against it after a very short time. The speed was a bit of an effort for me and I guess I should trust in the plan.
Sorry to hear that Birdlady64. No one deserves to be spoken to like that - little does he know how many of your virtual friends will be disgusted by his behaviour.
Anyway, feeling like short runs are an opportunity to experiment a bit with speed, hills, running technique etc. Not so possible on a longer run. I did my short run faster than usual today 😀 Long one on Weds, so will be taking it more slowly 🐌
He’s in his early 20’s... being an idiot is cool... give it 20 or 30 years and he could well be over on C25K telling us how hard run one is. That’s my story anyways!
Here’s the kicker though... you’ve been running since April... probably thousands of people have seen you... this is the first moron. The world isn’t so bad... and that idiot probably can’t run a mile. Right now your life expectancy is higher than his... let’s just hope he sees the light at some point. Maybe one day he will be as awesome as you are.
Tiny minority. I had my first fall yesterday, not out on the trails, right there on the pavement right near a few teens who were messing around. I was ready for the comments... but they came over to make sure I was ok, helped me up, and went back to having fun. For every one that’s a moron there are hundreds that are caring in my experience.
I can beat that - having had a couple of close encounters with the ground due to dodgy paving slabs and cobblestones. Quite messy but no serious damage, except as you say, to the pride.
You have done well. After one fall I walked back later to see where I tripped, but couldn't tell because there were do many raised slabs and tree roots! I had been running down that street for years do I am surprised that I hadn't come a cropper before that!
You are right about the pride, I was actually more worried that it might stop me running for a while. Also last night when I dropped a glass mat on my big toe. A bit sore at first but ok this morning
Sometimes I think those a roots grab at our ankles, I swear I’ve felt it... maybe it was that?! That was my thinking too... saw the training flash before my eyes, said goodbye to the HM, and was thinking of physio, all in a couple of seconds! When I told the wife it could have been worse, she thought I meant in terms of injury... what I was actually thinking was “thank God it wasn’t a PB attempt”
Good to hear that mat hasn’t sidelined you... there does seem to be a high prevalence of injuries while not running around here at times.
Oh no - what a plonker that young guy is! BUT you are making the best version of yourself and he is making a fool of himself! Think about it and throw it away!
Congratulations I’m starting the B210K plan and with Speed - we are twinning! 🤗
ahh this is the side of running which I don't like I hope it didn't get to you too much.
I live in a city and at least once per run I get weird comments from men or outright catcalling. It makes me very self conscious, and also makes me scared to run, especially in the evenings. They're usually wayy older than me and often in groups. I'm literally terrified to run past groups of men!! ugh.
Oh dear - please don't let it stop you running. You are so much better than them!
Small minded idiots!
Obviously I know it happens but this was my first experience like that and it just shocked me a bit. It won't let it stop me though. Running has made such a positive difference in my life
Empty vessels make the most noise. It’s a very true saying. Morons are just morons. I had a lady give out to me for running at the start of Covid and the start of lockdown. I was very angry 😡, but very calmly and very politely explained that I had been running around this 5K loop for 3 years and had been seeing the same usual walkers and runners for 3 years and had never seen her before. That put her back into her box.
This gives me the rage. It's why I tend to prefer running in the winter dark. I find here that it's not so much teenagers, but older men - they always seem to have something "amusing" to say. I just blank them completely- don't even glance in their direction. I know you won't let it put you off.
Sadly there will always be idiots like this. I worked in a gardens in a city centre and the name calling and abuse at times was ridiculous, but always when these lads were with their mates but on their own they were quiet as a mice!
Sometimes difficult to do but ignore them in a few years they may actually grow up 😂
All these lovely responses on here are what is truly great about this community, so much support from so many people.
I think it's more likely to be the traffic rather then the fear of encountering idiots. 5.30 in the evening wasn't the ideal time to run down the main road through town to be honest 😶
He was just an idiot probably showing off in front of his mates, just finished reading his comic and didn’t know what to do next.....ignore people like that, irritating though it is. You’re out there getting fit and I bet you’re a hell of a lot fitter than that clown will ever be 🤡 ........👍🏃♀️💪🏻
