Not feeling it today!

Set off to do my 6km at Bedgebury Pinetum to complete Week 2 of the Magic Plan. Beautiful morning, blue skies and sunshine, perfect for a lovely run. The pic shows the various running routes you can choose from, I decided to try the 2km trail as that's the only one I had never done before. So I could just do 3 laps to make up the 6km - easy peasy right? Well I did the first lap and it really was a lovely route. But when I got back to the start, I just felt like I didn't want to go round again. So I did the 3km trail instead. So not done 6km. And in fact didn't quite complete the 3km route as towards the end, you have to run past the car park and I actually just walked to my car instead of finishing the run. Feeling a bit disappointed with myself! But a run is a run. I think for the longer runs I should just use the 10km trail rather than doing laps, I think in my head I had finished after the first 2km.

Does look like a beautiful place. Shame, but still a good run - and there's always next time!

DebstonGraduate10 in reply toForbiddenPlanet

Thanks Forbidden Planet! Next run will be Parkrun there on Saturday - just one lap for the 5km and no running near the car park so no chance to decide to finish early! 😂

Well done Deb...I agree always hard to run past your finish post doing laps.

I chose there and backs for getting up to 10k.

Sounds like a lovely place to run there!

😊xx

The sign in my pic is the start / finish for all the routes - I think that's the problem, even if it's a bit silly. Out and backs work well for me, or one lap like we have for the parkrun 5k. Ah well, lesson learnt.

What a lovely place to run. I feel I have route envy! But a run is a run even if not the intended one. Your 10k trail sounds fab. Enjoy.

It is lovely and at the moment, one of the few non muddy places to run! I'm missing going in my local woods but I just can't face the slipping and sliding in the mud. 😂

You're right Debston a run is run. You obviously like the 10k trail route rather than laps. At least you tried it. Your weather sounds lovely😊

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply toBuddy34

I'll definitely do the 2km route again, maybe for fartleks, it'd be perfect for that as mainly flat. The weather was perfect, which makes me feel like I've wasted it!

Laps are funny we lap a park but run further if we stretch out round the lake

Still a good run so don’t be too disappointed

So easy when nearthe car just to stop, well done for doing the 3k route after the 2k, that shows determination. Happy running

Don't be too disappointed with yourself Debston, as you know from other posts today I also ran, run 3 of week 2 of the Magic Plan, I did the time bit, 39 minutes, not the distance which was probably 5.5K as I did not have my app with me, I started at 9.01 and finished at 9.40, it says on the plan, regarding run 3, 6K or 39 minutes. 😊 🏃🏾

Thanks AlMorr. I am feeling a bit happier with myself now!

Hmm interesting point. The psychology of it all is fascinating isn’t it?! I definitely feel that when I’ve had to add in an extra loop at the end, it’s so tempting to just keep going on the old way straight back home. I think for me an out and back works well, as I have no choice 😁 But a 10k trail would be good as you’d feel so excited getting further each time, seeing more of the route unfold!

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply toJazzyrunner

Yes, I have only done the 10km trail a couple of times but it is a fab route and the best bit is the last km is running DOWN the hill we have to run UP for parkrun! That feels very good and it's so familiar, you really know that the finish line is in sight.

Jazzyrunner profile image
JazzyrunnerGraduate10 in reply toDebston

That sounds perfect, lovely to finish with a downhill!

Still better than no run - and you've cheered me up to hear other people have the same mental sticking points as me. Out & backs I have no problem with, but if I do laps I have to really fight the gremlins to keep going. Sometimes I win, sometimes they do. Great looking trails by the way ☺️

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10

Thanks Runnf, yes I will be avoiding laps from now on! It's just much tougher mentally - bit like having to run past your own front door because your route wasn't quite long enough on the C25K!

Well done even so Deb. 5k is better than 0k and I don’t blame you one bit going back to your car when you got there! It’s psychologically so hard to run beyond your start/finish point isn’t it? 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply tocheekychipmunks

It really is! Thanks cheekychipmunks!

Don’t be disheartened you did really well and didn’t give up, which you could have done. Some days are just really hard.

Never mind Debston , 6k can come next week. The great thing about this plan is you can move it around to suit you. If parkrun is not on due to the storms, you’ve done your 5k and can do 6k next week . I love running on woodland paths, much softer on the joints!

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply toDexy5

Thnks Dexy5, and yes, I try to avoid pavement running and stick to the trails as worry about the old knees etc.

Hi Debston there’s always next time and as you say a runs a run. Bedgebury is not just a run it is quite a challenging place there are no easy parts even the downhills . I can never pre judge a run there be it park run race or just a run. So don’t beat yourself up too much. 👍

I have the same problem with laps....my motivation just seems to go. As you say you were still out there, a run is still a run and not a shabby distance....we are so hard on ourselves sometimes.

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply toSparkey5000

I'm glad it's not just me that finds laps tricky!

sounds like a good run, in a lovely place, the 6k is still there another day :)

It’s a funny thing, that. I find a similar thing happens if I do a figure of eight that goes past my house. Little voices start telling me to go in a get a glass of water, or something. Its like we are programmed to finish when we reach our house/car and it is really hard to push past. A longer loop sounds a good plan.

I’m half-heartedly thinking about coming to the Pinetum park run tomorrow. It’s a 40 minute drive... will see how I’m feeling in the morning. Isn’t storm Dennis approaching?

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply toktsok

ktsok - I know a lot of parkruns have cancelled but Bedgebury parkrun posted on facebook earlier this evening saying it's going ahead! If you do come, please come and say hi at the start - I'll be wearing grey hoodie with fluorescent yellow piping and will have my son with me. Would be so nice to meet a virtual running buddy!

Another time, I hope Debston! I didn’t get back from climbing until about 11pm last night, so the 7.30am start required to get to Bedgebury never happened! I hope you had a good run (you are probably running right now!). Stay safe out there 🙂

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply toktsok

Another time! Weather was OK, bit grey but no rain and not windy. I don't think I beat my pb today but at least I got round without any urges to get in the car and go home! 😂

It’s like that sometimes Debston. And considering you wasn’t feeling the fun, you did a great distance! Good for you for sticking with it. If I saw my car on that kind of run, I know, without doubt, I’d be right in it too! And yes...a run is a run and you did a lot of running. 🤩❤️

Debston profile image
DebstonGraduate10 in reply toFabulous450

Thanks Fabulous450! I enjoyed parkrun today at the same venue, even though I was tired (late night) and the weather was not nearly as nice. Just shows, sometimes there's no particular reason for it! Onwards and upwards!
