Well here I am on the IC at 73 drugged up to the eyeball injured elbow, grazed knees bruised ribs, front tooth missing and an eye closed with swelling and other facial injuries. The hospital A& E treated me well, my running buddy had scopped me up and got me there very quickly. Running injury? Did I not warm? Was I not prepared well yes to all. I TRIPPED sprinting the last half a k on a gravel path.
Think I need to ask myself some hard question about this running? I will be offline for at least 2 months if not more.

Oh hamit, Iβm so sorry to hear that! What a horrible thing to happen - and it happens so fast doesnβt it? One minute youβre fine, then seconds later everything has changed. A real shock to the system. Iβm glad you had someone there to get you to hospital quickly and that youβre now getting the care you need to heal. And Iβm sure you will heal because youβre a fit 73 year old and you have a good reason to heal - running! Take care of yourself- let us know how youβre getting along! Weβll be here when you come back and we look forward to seeing you then!
Oh no Hamit, I feel you pain, your embarrassment, and wishing you could turn the clock back and redo that run without the fall. Everything goes into slow motion and you know that thereβs nothing to you can do to change the outcome.
I did a similar trip on a sprint finish just at the end of my first ever 9k run along a stoney path. I gouged my elbows on sharp flint stones (trying to avoid broken wrists) and turned up at hospital bleeding and bruised.
Your injuries do sound worse, but Iβm telling you this because this was just an accident, and something that could have just as easily happened if you had been walking albeit a bit slower. Your body will recover and you will want to put those running shoes on again.
In the meantime, do take care, rest and get the regular changes of dressings you will probably need. If youβve got someone who can spoil you, just let them.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and hereβs some flowers. πΊπΈπΌπ»πΉπ·
Every thing was going so well I have been doing hill training elevation of around 26 m in 630 m and now the I C well who said running was not exciting π
Sorry to hear that, and wishing you a speedy recovery. And I do hope the hospital staff gave you credit for being out there running rather than telling you to take it easy!
Just to clarify, in case it's necessary, that my comment wasn't intended as a snipe; I'm a great supporter of the NHS and know quite a few people who work, or worked, for it.
Oh Hamit, this is terrible news. Hope you heal quickly and that we see you back on the forum soon. I agree with the person who said it was during the sprint where you were running like a young whippersnapper. π Sending you good wishes.
Yes I felt a bit sorry for myself but the support from this site soon sorted that out. Look forward to restarting and revisiting c25k again to get my fitness back. Taking the opportunity to listen to some music, Texas blues is my favourite but I can't jam along due to the swollen hand. Well never give up and never surrender.
Really sorry to hear that hamit - hope you make a swift recovery and that your experience doesn't put you off. Texas blues sounds like the perfect remedy!
Hamit !!! Remember you gave us all support when we were struggling with c25k times and various week challenges... now its our turn to support you ... hope to read about your progress very soon... october c25k??? Why not!! The autumn weather should be lovely for your grand re-start ... take care
Yesterday felt like defeat, today I don't want to surrender. Thankyou for your good wishes. Today I will fire up my guitar amp and try and make some noise.
Ouch. I did a great FutureLearn course a while back about Falls... so often a big thing in The Elderly... but it showed that falling is something that happens to all ages, doing all sorts of banal things. Wear your wounds with pride!
If you hit the ground that hard and needed scooping up, you won't have been able to run off all the adrenalin and that takes a while to get over, and then there's the confidence issue (biggest risk factor for falling turns out to be fear of falling!)
I hope you are already looking and feeling a good deal better this morning and wish you a solid and not too lengthy recovery.
Really sorry to hear this hamit. I hope you recover soon. Texas blues is where my heart is and I worship at the altar of SRV. π I take it you wonβt be playing your guitar for a while but if you want to chat about gear and technique until youβre back, Iβm your man π
Sorry about your injuries Hamit but give it a couple of weeks and you may be able to start gentle running. I am 76 and run 6 days a week. Muscles do get tired but vary the run to suit how you feel. I sometimes go out intending to run 7k and end up doing 5k and vice versa. What I am saying is start back when you can and run how you feel and cut out the sprint finishes.
Thanks, good advice from a Senior. You are an inspiration. Well I am 73 so it great to see a 76er doing great I will point this out to the people telling me to give up.
Sorry for your injury but hope you will feel stronger and up to venturing out in a few weeks. At least that's a proper well earned running injury. When I injured my arm last year, I was WALKING to change the parking permit in the car. I turned my head upside to check something on the windscreen, tripped up the pavement and went headlong onto my arm and leg.
Love it! I tripped on rhododendron brashings and planted my nose. Surprised to still have scar on my forearm 3 months later but almost no pain now. A bramble ran after me once and grabbed me by the ankle and threw me on the floor. Lost my car keys as I later discovered so that was a longer than planned outing to retrieve them. I don't think I'll be coming high up the rankings, there've been some doozies on here. (A fractured pelvis tidying the garage springs to mind)
That sounds like really bad luck to me! Don't rethink - just get back out thete once you've recovered. Think how far you've come! You might not be off for as long as you think. Hope you recovery is swift! Take care x
Gosh, just seen this post - so sorry this happened hamit - how are you feeling today?
As others have said, it can happen so easily to anyone, whatever our age but even at a rather sprightly 55, I know I don't bounce back quite as quickly as I used to!!
I hope you are being well looked after and start to feel better soon - take care.π
