Broken ankle update

Hi gang, I've been to the fracture clinic and all is well so far, after a scary start. The day after the urgent care clinic sent me off with a walking boot, the fracture clinic called to tell me NOT TO PUT WEIGHT ON IT and to go back to the clinic for crutches, so I did. They also gave me heparin which I have to inject into my (roll of fat) stomach to prevent blood clots while I'm immobile. Lovely.

Anyway, had my appointment at fracture clinic where they x-rayed again, and everything is healing well. I had TWO fractures?!! One has almost healed already. They also gave me a smaller boot, as the first one would have fitted a rugby player. I have to keep my weight off it for another week, then start to use it. Back in 3 weeks, but they think it will heal well with no complications. No running for a while though, apparently 🤔

Very very thankful to all those lovely NHS staff doing their best under very trying conditions. 🙏

Oh blimey, two fractures 🙀 you don’t do things by halves do you?

But great news that one had nearly healed 🙂 The body does have a powerful ability to heal from all sorts of injuries.

Have you been working as per Popeye’s routine yet? 💪💪

😁 Turns out that using the crutches, and negotiating the stairs on my bum is enough of a workout for now! No seriously, I'm absolutely shattered, I had to wear the boot in bed for the first week and got hardly any sleep, and I was taking cocodamol which knocked me flat. Now the swelling has gone down, and I'm on paracetamol, I feel a bit clearer headed, so maybe soon.💪

You’re absolutely right and letting the body rest up, that way it heals quicker. As you say, going up and down stairs and using the crutches sounds pretty decent upper body workout to me. You’ll still be 💪 when you return to running.

Glad you are healing well grumpyoldgirl, I wonder If you heal faster because you keep fit by running. I hope everything goes well . Take care 🤗🤗

Hi GoG, cripes that's quite a setback to fight your way back from...a double fracture!😶

I'm glad you are able to get a bit of sleep now that the swelling is going down, just getting around sounds exhausting, and up and down stairs too.

Keep faith and heal well, lovely to hear that you are being well looked after.

I expect physio will follow, to make you lovely and strong again.

Here are some flowers for you...🌻🌼🌹🌺🌷🌸💐🌻🌼🌹🌺xxx

Thank you blue, yes they've already got me waving my foot about to keep the joint mobile 😁 xx

Oh no!! I had that 2 years ago and cdnt run for 3 months. I did buy myself a “ leveller” ( there are dear ones and cheaper ones- I paid about £8or 9 ) on Amazon or EBay but they make your other shoe about the same height as the boot and makes it less strain on your hip and easier to get about.

Good luck with your recuperation 💪🌹🌷💐

I see what you mean, yes that would be useful. Thank you! ( A lady at the fracture clinic gave me her grip covers for crutches, when she handed her crutches back in, they are are also useful)

You have had a rotten couple of weeks GOG! I know it must be so frustrating, but it does sound as though things are going in the right direction and good to hear you are healing well! just remember, every day is a day nearer to getting back to running, although I am sure you will just be looking forward to not wearing a big ol' boot first! Take care and good luck.🙂

Yes, first milestone will be, putting my foot down. That will make balancing on one leg a bit easier. Can't wait to get rid of the boot!

Hi GoG,

I broke my ankle jun of last year. So frustrating to be down when you have so much you want to do. Glad you’re healing. I liked limberlou’s leveler idea. Never heard of it b4, but I did hurt my hip crutching around for months. Hope you are able to keep sane during recovery.

Thanks, there seem to be a few broken ankle survivors on here, and that is encouraging, because you've all managed to get back to running in the end. That leveller looks really nifty, I can believe it would take a toll on your "good" hip after a while. Are you sorted now?

Hi GOG! So glad that things are starting to heal a bit for you - having a double fracture must have been a real body blow! The whole thing sounds knackering and I do hope you can get some decent sleep soon! Best wishes for speedy recovery!

I didn't know they did 'buy one get one free' for fractures GOG! Hope this week isn't too much of a trial and you can start weight-bearing again.

Blimey it sounds like you’ve been through the ringer there GOG. But sounds like you’re making good progress now, and the prognosis is good too.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Whoa GOG, one fracture is bad enough - but two? Noooo. 🤦‍♀️ And having to inject into your stomach? 😨

Anyway, it sounds like everything is under control and now it’s a waiting game. Here’s to your eventual return to running whenever that might be. We’ll all to here to celebrate that moment with you. 😘

That’s good! Keep your chin up, but come back on here for a grizzle if you need perking back up. We feel your pain. 👍

Hi I feel your pain, I’ve just been released from the orthopaedic boot, still on crutches and running seems like a loooong way away. I have felt so depressed not being able to run or walk properly , piled weight on because I feel sorry for myself, and I’m now waiting to see a specialist about my ankle as the swelling is still there with quite a bit of pain.

King Zinny ( spaniel) is not amused that I can’t walk for hours but it’s onwards we go.

Hope we both can get back to being runners soon!

grumpyoldgirl profile image
grumpyoldgirl in reply toMyzinnyboy

Oh no zinny, you too! I know what you mean about the weight, there's not much else to do, and the only thing I can carry while on the crutches is packets of crisps 🐷

Hope you get that pain and swelling sorted, you must be sick of it by now. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you 🤞

Oh dear Gog - I’ve just read about your exploits! 🥺 I hope you’re soon able to walk on it at least. Meanwhile we’re all here to listen to your grumbles and try to keep you positive as you know you’ll be back and we’ll be right behind you cheering you on.

Hi I just wanted to reassure that you will be fine I think because I broke my leg and needed a plate and 5 screws in the ankle bone as it was a twisted fracture, I thought I wouldn't be able to run, the surgeon told me it will be ok. I had to inject myself every day for one and half months for blood thinning. I was walking after 2 months when the boot came off and was able to do couch to 5k in the winter of that year about 8 months later when I had never run previously and was a bit of a couch potato. It is sometimes niggly because I am older and overweight but stretches from yoga help, and we all have aches and pains, anyway take care and I wish you a speedy recovery and do what the doctors say best wishes and happy running in the future love and hugs

grumpyoldgirl in reply toJanechic

Jane, you've really been through it! So great that you did the c25k anyway, that's amazing. The aches and pains are no surprise, we can swap remedies later! 😁 Thanks so much for the heads-up. Hugs back 🤗

grumpyoldgirl in reply toJanechic

Hi Jane, I'm doing ok thanks, last week's heatwave didn't help, I'm relieved that it's cooled down again, and I've started with weight bearing now. Thinking of buying one of those leg pillows with a groove in it, because getting to sleep isn't easy. Back to the facture clinic next Monday! Boring though, isn't it!? Actually, maybe I'll write another post later, to give me something to do. Thanks for checking up on me 🤗

Oh no Roxdog, we're gonna need a bigger couch! (And a great big footstool for all the moon boots) Hopefully we'll all be back out there before too long 🤞🙏
