Virtual Cape Wrath 10k (the short course!)

Today I should have been running the Cape Wrath 10k with Grannyhugs although we nesh southerners would have been in a VW camper and not a tent 😂 I had intended to do a virtual run, but sat on bed with a cup of tea reading about last night’s announcement and it just got too much for me. First time it’s really affected me, but I just can’t believe the mentality of telling us for 7 weeks to stay home, essential short journeys only but on Wednesday we can all jump in our cars, drive any distance we want and can sunbathe, picnic, read a book but we still are not allowed to see our children, grandchildren and parents. The National Parks and coast are going to be thronged and the Police won’t be able to do a thing about it. Utter madness 🤬 Anyway by lunchtime I decided a run might make me feel better so put my kit on and set off. There was a strong wind, it was cold and threatening rain and after 3k I decided to abandon it and ran the 2k back home to make a just over 31 min 5k. Sorry to abandon you grannyhugs but you did brilliantly. Need to pick myself up now!

You made a start which is important. There are things you can and can't control; so let the things you can't go, and focus on what you can. One of those is running and you even got out feeling the way you did! Well done. A victory against the gremlins today. A 31 minute 5k is a great beginning.

Go you..you got out and did it. These times are dreadful and I do not think anyone knows what is what at all.

I have not got a clue.

I cannot think about it right now..I get knotted inside.

It is a mess...but...we will come through rhrough this..we may have a few slow starts..we may have to turn back now and then..but we will do it.

You are strong and you ran xxx

Thanks Floss! I’m disappointed in myself that I didn’t do the full 10k, but, as you say, I did make it out and it wasn’t too bad a time xx

Well done Sandie1961 you got out and ran in the spirit of the challenge that's the main thing. I totally get your anger over last night's announcement. It's lovely that we in the north are being given clear, easy to understand instructions once again, we may not like them but they are clear and concise. Did you see the video from the organisers on Facebook last night? Lovely. Happy running 🤗

I saw a chink of light through Prof Spiegelhalter words on Sunday. As well as being great statistician/mathematician he is a good communicator. Well worth a listen. Can’t comment on guideline roll out; too cross.

Well done on getting out there today. I put on cold weather stuff (Mrs BC’s instructions 🙄) and made my comeback very slow 2k run; all good so far.

Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply toBeachcomber66

Thanks BC. Yes I was impressed by David Spiegelhalter too. Glad you managed to get out for a short run. In some ways I’m quite glad I’m not in the north of Scotland. Have you seen the temperature there currently? 🥶

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toSandie1961

Pretty cold up here too. Youngest BC did his first 12k today in 68 minutes. I am egging him onto HM. He will cruise it at this rate!

Great running by youngest BC 👏🏻👏🏻 Next you’ll tell me he did it without doing any training 😂

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toSandie1961

No he has been running from home since lockdown. His running has been mainly on treadmill until recently. He said “could have easily kept going but I had an appointment.” I think he is just realising what he can do.

Sandie1961 profile image

Even my running hating son has been going for a run with his girlfriend (who he has been staying with since lockdown) as the gym is closed. He hasn’t been won over yet though!

If you can do HM, I’m sure youngest BC can. He’s got a lot to live up to.

Beachcomber66 profile image
Beachcomber66Graduate10 in reply toDexy5

I am certain he can. He is heavily into fitness; just hasn’t gone for distance until now. Not a lot to live up to 😂

You’re a great role model for him BC 😃

Beachcomber66 profile image

Very kind. Fortunately all 3 BC minors have done really well in their chosen fields in careers which are very different from mine and from each other. I enjoy being supporting cast when needed and called upon. 🙂

You did great Sandie. I think we’re all feeling dumbfounded, perplexed, confused, annoyed and just generally fed up with all of it. One of my steely nerved friends was in tears today and that is most unlike her. But we will get through this, another day nearer the end of it passes each sleep.

Us runners are better equipped to fight this than a lot of people because we have running and we have this community. Your 10k will still be there for another day xx

You’re right TC but I do so miss seeing the girls. We’ve had one Zoom call but they didn’t stay long! Must make sure I do a virtual Vitality London 10000 on 25th 😁

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply toSandie1961

I bet, it is very hard. Katnap hasn’t seen his mum since she left hospital. What would we do without technology.

We’ll definitely ‘join’ you on the 25th 👍

I will mention this to UpTheStanley - I’m sure he’ll be up for it if he can drive somewhere quiet.

I’m definitely up for a virtual London Vitality 10000. 😀 Shame they aren’t offering a virtual option (maybe they will?) so we can get our bling. Bristol 10k sent a last minute email, so maybe London will too? I’m shallow with bling. 😅🏅

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply tocheekychipmunks

Me too! They still haven’t sent any more information about when it might be rearranged, but the way they’re talking, large gatherings are going to be many months away, so I hope they do let us do a virtual run 🤞

I’ve ordered some bling for my Run Every Day in May as there’s a 31 day challenge on Virtual Races Uk. Bit of an incentive for when I don’t want to go out.

A bit of proper bling from one of the runs I’ve entered this year would be nice!!

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply toTailChaser

It’s definitely an incentive! You should have seen the speed I headed out for my 2nd 10k in a week when the Bristol email arrived - the promise of a shiny medal made it all worthwhile! It came yesterday too - it’s gorgeous! 😍🏅

You did great on your 5k run after feeling the way you did , I know it wasn't your Cape Wrath 10k but just to push yourself out the door and run anyway is good . Hope you felt better after your run.

I know Sandie - it has been bad enough here at the coast during lock down , What will it be like when everyone else can drive here too? The city roads will become dangerous for all the families who have been able to cycle around with relative safety up to now.

I hope we will all be be able to see family soon.

Hi Sandie, I absolutely agree with you re the madness of this bizarre message from our leader. Everyone’s interpreting it differently and it seems a free for all Geographically this side of the border 🤷‍♀️

Anyway, well done on the running front, you got out there 👍 I’ve been up and down and got up to 10 k again at least one a week with a couple of 5s as well. Enjoying the Farmers Arms run and the cut through across to Cold Hamworth. Had a couple of weeks off with knee again and can’t seem to get the distance up again (still slow of course!). Realising this activity is as much about the head as the legs!

Your times are getting better and better, well done you! Xx

You just need to find the next challenge to get your mojo back. Make good use of the cooler conditions before we all need to guzzle extra water!

It is a mighty bizarre time Sandie, and I truly feel for people who can’t see their families. I’m so amazingly lucky having mine all here. ❤️

As for running, I must admit I’m getting a bit bored of my lovely Common. I’m supposed to be going out this morning, in fact I will when I’ve finished this reply! It’ll probably be my last day running from home as the road will start getting busy again. But I’m bit nervous going back to my old routes ..... we get institutionalised I suppose.

As for your foreshortened 10k, well your 5k effort was stellar as ever. It was just one of those days. Take tons of care and ‘see’ you on the 25th! ❤️

I guess you will though be able to drive out to your old routes and take Flossie with you again. Silver lining 😃

Aww Sandie, you've done well to get to now without a wobble...I'll admit, it's coming out of lock down that has me the most concerned too. I'm lucky that I'm just over the border in Wales and we're on 3 more weeks of Stay Home, though we can exercise from home more than once a day now.

You at least got out and had a bit of fresh air and exercise, and a not to shabby time. I'm still chasing that elusive sub 30 so have only had a handful of 30/31 minute 5K's.

Aren't you now allowed to meet a member of your family outside now, maybe there's some way you can arrange something...otherwise if you're in a position to then I'd only relax the rules as much as you're comfortable with. If I was in England, apart from any compulsory work I'd be carrying on staying home and letting the ones that want to go gallavanting see how safe it is for the rest of us xx

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply toRun46

One person can meet one other person in the open air at a distance of 2m. Not very helpful with 6 and 9 year old granddaughters! And do I get to see our son or does my husband? Madness!

Sybilw profile image
SybilwGraduate10

I think we can all empathize with that. My 5 year old granddaughter can mix with everyone at school but not her cousin! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Keep positive despite the challenges - this too will pass.

Well done Sandie, your run sounds as though it was just what you needed, even if it wasn’t what you’d hoped to be doing! I’m with you, as I suspect many people are when not comes to ‘the announcement’. I can now see either Dexy5 or UpTheStanley but not both. And we can meet on the pavement outside their or my house but not in the garden. How does that work? The whole thing is bonkers! But on the plus side, I think you can now drive anywhere you want to in your campervan!

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply toOldgirlruns

Absolutely agree! Also I could sit next to you all day in the office but not have an after work glass of wine at your house/in your garden 🤷‍♀️ Only travel involving no overnight stay though!
