Alternative title: "Forgive me ju-ju, for I have sinned"
Absolutely buzzing - I'd had a feeling I was ready to do the 10k, and I was
Set off bright and early this morning along my country lane route, with the "official goal" of doing this week's long run for week 3/4 of ju-ju's plan, so about 8k.
However... my "regular readers" from C25K will know that I do have something of a track record for breaking a few rules. And I know - it's not clever, not big, risks injury, but I do just like to push the boundaries now and then
So my real plan for this morning, right from the very start, was to try and do a 10k. That's about a 25% increase in time and distance on my previous longest run.
So while it was certainly going off piste and not following ju-ju's plan, I felt very "much in the mood" so... off I trotted...
Early on, with that nice Strava bloke popping up every 1km to tell me my time and split time, I noticed that my "happy pace" is now a bit faster than it used to be, so the work on intervals and faster shorter runs definitely seemed to be paying off. And halfway through the fourth km I realised my speed was taking me very close to my current PB for 5k. So I decided to see if I could do that as well, chucked in a much faster 5th km, and trimmed 30 seconds off my 5k time!
Then went back to the happy pace for a bit of recovery and carried on. I just trotted along at my pace of 7.5mins/km or thereabouts and, while it's fair to say that in the final few km I wasn't quite bounding along like the happy little bunny I'd been during the first half, it wasn't difficult to keep going, and I finished the 10k in under 1h 15m.
Then it was home for a litre or two of water and a very long, very hot bath!

By the way who is this block on Strava, after months on Strava, still waiting to hear him.I must have upset him. What does he need🤔 Some cake or a Roulade.🤔
You need to turn on the audio prompts on Strava and the bloke will do his thing.
And you’d never guess the HoagyM link, it’s deliberately obscure so that I can come on forums like this incognito while I work out whether the people are nice or not😄
Hoagy, that was amazing! Both the 10K and the 5K PB. Well Done you. We're all going to be in detention together, that's you, myself and Rip all breaking rules in the last week. I blame the sunshine - once it cools down and we're out running, life feels good, our legs know the drill and it's just pure joyous!
Now that you've gone and blooming well done it, I hope you're going to consolidate before setting your sights on a half (or would be be just as well skipping the norm and saying full) marathon!
Thanks Sutsha. And yes, the only focus for now is the Cardiff 10k in September, so consolidation is the name of the game.
Of course, towards the end of the 10k run today, my mind did start wandering off to think about what the next challenge might be, and that maybe a HM wasn’t as out of the question as I’d thought it was 😉
But not going anywhere near that dangerous thought until at least September!
AMAZING!!!! 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼So very pleased for you! You’ve been there right with me on this plan and now we’ve both broken the 10% rule. 🤫 Just been pipped to the post but you are forgiven as it’s you! But what an achievement hey??
I’ll be with you on the 10K podium 🎓🥂at the weekend hopefully. Please have water at the ready! So.....what next? 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼Xx
Thanks Rip, and yes it was definitely your recent 9k that spurred me on, I had planned to leave the 10k until the weekend after next (practise run with my sis down in Wales), but decided it was now or never 😄
Thanks BBR, and that’s a good suggestion, hadn’t thought of having any extra rest days - in fact had been planning to get back to running every other day, given my recent motivation loss and 3-4 day breaks.
Have been lucky (touch wood) so far - no aches or pains at all since starting C25k, but my knees are definitely feeling it after this morning, so some extra rest and recovery is probably in order.
A good run...😊 and whilst pushing boundaries is fine...if you are sensible...and very, very sure you have the strength and fitness to complete the run...for some of us lesser mortals..we just need to make sure they aren't the boundaries of the IC room😊
Ha ha I am no priest Far from it in fact!! But well done, I am so pleased your motivation mojo reared his head! I know you need the drive of a next goal, and waiting a day before your next ( shorter!) run is very sensible. Well done...
