Since completing my 10k at the start of April I have been doing a consolidation pattern of 5k, 7k & 10k each week. I have felt my stamina improving and getting a little faster - amazing! This morning I have ran my fastest 5k yet 40.13 mins. I am so pleased target next Monday the 40.
That sounds like a tough weekly run schedule, please be a little careful though of not doing to much too soon.
I finished c25k about a month or two before you, and had a similar weekly routine and was also feeling stronger and getting faster. That was up until 10 days ago, when suddenly after another sub 30 5k I experienced sharp knee pain. It appears I have an issue with an IT band, which is fairly common in newbie runners doing too much too soon.
Some good folk on here told me that although as new runners we improve our fitness, speed, and endurance quickly it does take a longer time for joints and ligaments to catch up.
There are exercises we can do to mitigate against these injuries, such as strengthening exercises for muscles around or feeding in to ligaments and joints.
Of course all of the above is intended in a friendly way, in the same spirit in which it was passed on to me. I hope yourself and others can avoid the injury I have now.
Hello MartinKH thank you for your lovely advice, I do cycling and walking as well so getting plenty of exercise, I am though slow and just go at my own pace not pushing to achieve fast times, this morning was a bonus I think by doing this my stamina and speed improving that along with the fact Iβm a stone and a half lighter than last September! I will though take care. Hope you come through your injury and back up and running soon. π
No worries, I have thought all the way through this fantastic programme go at the pace youβre comfortable with, so you ease back gently and advice is always welcome on this programme. Take care
Yes I agree it is a fantastic programme, and the advice and encouragement on here is equally valuable.
Thank you for your kind words about my recovery, I'll definitely have to ease back in gently and I know now that's the way to get back in and run sustainably.
Well done on all your achievements so far, that is great stuff.
