Tortoise gets PB for 7K 🐒

Well, it was inevitable, in fact, as it was my first 7K. πŸ˜„πŸ€£

Very pleased, in fact. I’ll never be quick, but stamina seems to be coming along and no undue aches, pains, out of breath, or other after effects. I have the clamps firmly on to prevent adding β€œjust a little extra”, no matter how steady it feels. I am NOT going back on that IC. πŸ™ƒ

My new running companion Mr Garmin congratulated me on β€œincreasing my cardio fitness with this aerobic activity.” πŸ€” Slightly hard to interpret, as I went no faster than previous runs, which were deemed β€œslightly aerobic”, but a compliment is a compliment so I’m not going to argue with the algorithm. (Profitless anyway, that. 🀣)

I am in awe of all you big distance/high speed competitors over the weekend. Well done, all you runny folk! πŸ‘πŸΌπŸŽ‰πŸ‘

Well done Granspeed, not far to 10k now. Take it as slowly as you wish , there is no rush. It would be great if you entered the New Forest Run in 2020.

πŸ€” We shall see! If I ever do a group run, that will be it, and it’s conveniently far away (in time😊) just now. And I can cheer you for the HM....

Like your approach Grandspeed; I am getting back to some long slower runs too. Well done on the 7k. You have done the hard bit; just a steady cruise through to 10k now, in your own good time. πŸ‘πŸ‘

I have been partly inspired by your recent work-up to distance, and secretly hoping it may have a similar, if lesser, effect on my speed over shorter distances. πŸ˜„πŸ˜³

It will do! The basis for the last few months has been gradual strengthening, but two additional things inspired me to run more quickly. First running intervals taught me that I could move rather more quickly than I had imagined, over short distances to start with; a confidence thing really. Second was running with other people. Park Runs and now a 10k race inspired me to run a bit more quickly too. But the platform for it was definitely the long slower runs and daily leg exercises. I am taking a break from PB chasing (pbs at all distances were done in September which feels a bit manic!) and am doing more hill work and slow runs to make sure that I keep up with strength and stamina development and don’t end up IC by overdoing things. You are doing brilliantly πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

GranspeedGraduate10 in reply to Beachcomber66

I have actually got down to doing a few interval experiments with JogRunSprint during September so that’s on the cards going forward. (My, that sounds organised for me. What is happening here? 😳) Am only creeping slowly towards group runs though.... Maybe. Maybe.

I had to be coaxed into group runs, but the reality was that everyone was really nice. Throwback to first day at school nerves😊

I firmly believe that the only way to get quicker over a given distance (say 5k) is to run shorter distances at your target faster pace (maybe much shorter distances to begin with, perhaps as little as 1k) and slowly build the distance you can go at that pace back up. As Beachcomber66 says, running longer distances at a slower pace provides the strength/stamina platform you need, but it doesn't get you running at a higher cadence or with a longer stride length - and without increasing one or the other of those, you just don't go any quicker :-)

That said, I know your #1 aim is to go further rather than faster just now, so just ignore me for the time being :-)

GranspeedGraduate10 in reply to UpTheStanley

Now, UTS, could I ignore you? You might set Brunhilda on me! 😳 I have, in fact, been doing alternate β€œcomfortable” and β€œpushing” km for a while on some runs, and it’s definitely making me a faster tortoise. Distance is the main aim at the moment, however, both for preference and because I need that strength. Someone on another thread posted about adjusting Mr Garmin to show average pace instead of current pace, and I’m going to explore that too. Will see if I can use the new toy more productively. Projects! Must be Autumn! πŸ˜„

I’m gonna wager you actually got 2 PBS today, one way or the other! I track best km, best mile, best 5k etc... as well as most distance and also longest duration... so if you didn’t set both those last two, you probably beat your 5k time to get to the distance one! So, double PB means double congratulations and double wide proud grin!

Very well done.

Oh I like this approach! πŸ˜„ I may find a use for all those bewildering stats yet.... πŸ€” It did say something about elevation gain so perhaps I can count that (but nothing in the Lyme Park category, I assure you.)🀣

Well done 7k sounds like a long way to me, we only managed 5k once the knee and feet made for shorter runs

Short runs are good too. πŸ‘ I’ve been at this a bit longer & decided to trundle on a bit. 😊🐒

Well done to you! 7k is 7k, fast or slow. And being on that IC does tend to focus one on wellness rather than specific speed goals. So glad you're fully back and enjoying it!
