June 10k - oops 11k!

Sorry, long ramble coming up! Before we went to Spain I had been sussing out new routes around our french house. Since we’ve been back I’ve only done a 30 minute run round my usual short route so I decided to go and explore this morning. Dragged myself up the hill to the restaurant, then it was a nice downhill to the road and round to where the GR national footpath crosses. Turned left and onto a grassy track, still quite flat, then another left and a narrow track festooned with small rocks (wish I’d worn my trail shoes!). Back out onto another country road, then across another grassy lane with rather longer grass. At this point I had been going slightly downhill for over 4K and thought to myself uh oh this doesn’t bode well for the return. Sure enough soon I was on a very slippery clay trail with deep puddles and had to hold onto the bushes to get past without falling in, past the chateau and uphill all the way. Got to just short of the village and it started to rain heavily. Couldn’t stand the thought of the steep hill past the church and the main road, so took a right downhill towards a winery near our house and through a very soggy vineyard. Arrived at our gate at 10.9k, so jogged on for 50m and back to make it neat. Well, you do, don’t you? So 11k, 1:21 and everything the french countryside could throw at me (did I mention hills😩) Happy running and keep dry 🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃🏻‍♂️

Sounded like a pretty full on run Sandie. I think a lot of people will be investing in trail shoes this ‘summer’. Hills are good - extra resistance training...that’s what I tell myself anyway 😁 x

Yes but 193m elevation gain (according to Strava) is just nuts! Nice to go somewhere different though

Ouch! Yes, you’re right, that is a bit mad!

Now I’ve found some nice routes, you’ll have to try them with me😃 more photos on Strava - beautiful countryside

What an adventure Sandie😊..I saw the pictures on Strava, it looked so nice (aside from the stones in the path!)

Some of it was a bit hairy by the sound of it, and the hills😕 would you run this route again?

Brilliant 11k very well done!😊xxx

I might just do it in dry weather - I was covered in mud by the time I got back and my poor shoes ...

One of those runs which feel particularly nice when you are looking back! I suspect I wouldn't have made it past the restaurant!!

A hilly 11k in a very respectable time; 👍👏👏👍👍👍👍 impressive. This inflationary trend in distances is a bit worrying though, especially with Cheeky chipmunk's 10 miles yesterday. Could be the start of another phase for the class of 2018. I downloaded Roseabi's plan yesterday....just to read it you understand......enjoy the rest of your holiday😊👏

Oh Beachcomber the start of a slippery slope - literally in my case. Sadly the restaurant was closed. Mind you, it has a Michelin star and even lunch is €40 a head so for special occasions only. We tend to go to the bistro next door - same view, lunch for €18! It was a lovely run but I think I’ll keep it for dry weather

Oh how gorgeous Sandie! 😍 What an adventure - aren’t trails the best? I’m quite the convert, and running in trail shoes gives such a wonderful feeling of stability.

Well done on your fantastic run! 🏃‍♀️👏🇫🇷

Thanks Cheeky! My poor shoes look very sad. Looked at the Strava profile and it was indeed downhill to mid point and uphill back - 193m elevation gain re Strava is just mad. Think I’m getting more used to hills 🧗‍♀️

Certainly sounds that way Sandie! Wonder how many hills there will be at Leamington? We’ll be ready! 😅😅🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

Everyone talks about the hills at Leamington but they really aren’t that bad. I think it’s just in comparison to pancake flat Stratford.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to TailChaser

Well hopefully they won’t be like Ashton Court or ....... *Lyme Park* 😱😱😅😅

TailChaser profile image
TailChaserGraduate10 in reply to cheekychipmunks

That would be good, I’d know I could do both of them then...no, definitely not.

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to TailChaser

Ashton Court is doable, Lyme Park sounds extremely scary! 😱😱😱😱

You’ve just done 10 miles, I’ve just done the Two Castles, we can do anything 😁🤗

Leamington is 375 on the list , while Ashton Court is 495, so you will be fine cheekychipmunks. Southsea is 2 😂😂

cheekychipmunks profile image
cheekychipmunksGraduate10 in reply to Dexy5

Wow, 2! That’s brilliant! I need to come and run Southsea at some point. Will you come to Ashton Court? It’s fun - once the hill is over! 😳😅

I will have to do hill training first. Bristol 10k repeat might be on for next year though. 🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♀️🏃‍♂️

How fab! I love a run to explore new pastures. The time flies doesn’t it 😃👍🏃‍♀️

Lovely scenery too 👍

The scenery was beautiful - vines and woods and fields. The time really did fly by and, apart from a little stiffness, I feel great 😃

A lovely 11k run Sandie, and hills!! Very well done.

I think I’ll be looking at trail shoes soon and disappear into the countryside.

It was lovely. I had a vague idea of where I was going but diverted from the planned route a couple of times because it looked interesting 😂 Hence 11 instead of 10k!

I blame cheeky for mine. 😂😂

That sounds wonderful, hills and all 💕. We're keeping too dry here, wishing for a bit of rain, that just doesn't seem to happen 😔

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply to SaskAlliecat

Yes Sask I shouldn’t really complain. France was starting to talk about drought warnings but I think storm Miguel has helped avert the immediate risk 🌧🌧☔️

The phrase ‘keeping too dry’ is one we haven’t used in the UK for quite some while! 💦💦💦💦💦💦💦

Sounds fab, very well done to you. At least if you had fallen near the chateau some prince/princess might have come along to rescue you 🙂

I do that thing too, run a little further just to make up a nice round number. Nuts isn't it?

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply to Irishprincess

Well it seemed silly to run an extra 0.9k and not be able to claim a new PB distance, even though it was 😂😂

Irishprincess profile image
IrishprincessGraduate10 in reply to Sandie1961

When I joined a running club for a while they always ran particular routes and usually stopped at odd numbers! At the beginning it drove me nuts. The OCD in me kept on running just to make up a number. I mean how can you stop at 7.92?!!!! But then after a while I got used to it and stopped rounding up. Even now I sometimes still stop at odd numbers just to test myself 🙄

Sandie1961 profile image
Sandie1961Graduate10 in reply to Irishprincess

Ooh I couldn’t do that, although actually if I do a timed run (eg a 30 minute one) I will stop at whatever distance it is. Has to be a nice round multiple of 5 minutes though 😂
