Did a nice little 10k this morning, first in a while so good to stretch my legs. Banana, water and coffee first thing then off I went.
I only really touch alcohol at the weekends now, and recently discovered cherry bakewell vodka. Delicious! Had a couple of those with tonic last night, and wondering if thatβs why my run felt hard today? Probably. Sigh. Am I going to give up the demon drink altogether?! π₯
In others news have booked a holiday in Cornwall for June and am beyond excited to get some beach runs in! Living in London, but being a Norfolk lass by birth, I really, really miss the sea.
Happy running to you all.

We often go to Norfolk for a long weekend and stay at Hunstanton, I aways try and fit in a early morning run either along the beach or sea front, (depending on the tide times!) ... running by the sea is certainly my favourite.
Hi Sadie-runs. I am lucky enough to live in wells and run at Holkham...just to make you envious...our parkrun around Holkham Hall is not so flat, there are three elevations in it, can't call them hills in Norfolk really. π
It's tough enough for a newbie like me.
Running on the beach is lovely but there is more deep soft sand than there is firm flat sand, trust me! Come and join us sometime soon.
One of my favourite places Sadie, Norfolk, like sunny hunny and have stayed at Sea Palling..
You know running dehydrates, drinking alcohol dehydrates as well, I may have a couple of beers the night before Parkrun, I drink plenty of water after the beers, PB is still rubbish though! maybe the reason, I should stop drinking before running the next morning! See the link about running and alcohol..π
Oh! Sea Palling was a favourite of mine as a kid. Fond memories of swimming in the sea and coming out with blue lips because it was always so cold, and really early memories of being dried with a towel by either my dad or my gran, and the exfoliation because of the sand! π
Great article, thanks. Sort of knew all the points they make, but turning a blind eye! I donβt drink much anymore, but noticing the difference of just one or two lately. Meh. x
Well done! Maybe you need more alcohol not less seriously, itβs great to see you enjoying the long runs. I would write more, but need to get out there myself, if my legs will allow
Hi Sadie, thank you for thinking of me. I just did about 2.5k and it was fine, back of knee a little tight, but to be honest, Iβve struggled to release it anyway, so no great surprise there. Iβll update you properly later!!
Ooh. Cherry bakewell vodka sounds yummy! I'm doing dry (half) January, so would be flyig I'm sure if it wasn't for the stupid leg. But it would take ore than a tough run to persuade me to give up the demon drink Cornwall running sounds lovely - how nice to have that to look forward to I'm sure your next run will be a great one
It is delicious! And refreshing with tonic. I tried to keep it to just two, but you know home measures are always wonky. I am doing dry-ish January and planning to keep it like this the rest of the year..only drinking 2 days a week and limiting the amount. Hope your leg is better soon, Linda. Such a bummer, but injury happens to the best of us. xxx
Well done for getting a 10k in on a Sunday morning Sadie.
I donβt know about the alcohol thing. Iβve tried to avoid it the night before a run but I had really good parkruns on Christmas Day and New Yearβs Day when I certainly didnβt abstain the night before. In fact I got a Parkrun PB on NYD.
Maybe the adrenaline took over.
Iβd say donβt give up your lovely sounding cherry bakewell vodkas but do make sure you have plenty of water as well.
I was going to do dry Jan, I've done it a few times in the past, but this year I've been away on holiday etc. So I'm doing dry Feb instead as I'm meant to be doing a HM at the end of Feb. I'm getting some of that vodka sounds delish! Never been to Norfolk, sounds great.
Itβs from Waitrose, Snuffy, and really lovely. I have cut down my drinking dramatically of late, so when I do drink it has to be quality. π Norfolk is special. And very flat - which is why I am still hill averse! π Good luck for your HM! x
I've used the excuse 'I'm running tomorrow' to reduce my weekly alcohol which needed to happen and is working.I do break it from time to time, especially when the lovely sloe gin winks at me, haven't noticed too much difference after 'just the one' to be honest.
I'm from Cornwall, husband from Norfolk and we live in the middle(!) So completely hear your Joy!
Running has certainly changed my drinking habits too, Empem; I drink way less than I used to, which is great! Another positive affect running has had on my life. π A Cornish/Norfolk union - how lovely! xxx
Thanks Dreams! π I do like the 10k distance a lot (though itβs not always easy, itβs always satisfying). It will my first time in Cornwall! Cannot wait. x
Wow I didnβt know about the flavour, I bet that was delicious..... and Cornwall, where abouts are you heading? Iβm often down there with my mum π
Cherry and almond = match made in heaven! The cherry is very tart, I love that. We will be based in St Ives, as thatβs easiest for us non-drivers, but hope to explore a bit by bus and long hikes! I am so looking forward to it, cannot believe I have waited so long to visit! I may well run on the beach early morning if thatβs possible! π
Oooooooo lovely. My mum is in Hayle so itβs round the corner. You can get the T2 bus to Hayle and run to the beach which I run on, itβs 4 miles of glorious sand, then go up onto the headland to see the seal colony, have brekkie at Godrevy cafe and get a bus home or walk. It would be about 7 miles and so so worth it.
Love the title Sadie. I thought maybe you really tied one on π₯΄. It is interesting how running impacts other parts of our life. Iβve never been a huge drinker but living on the water all summer, and making our own beer and wine, I used to be a bit of a seasonal drinker. Then I started running. Although Iβm not a total tea-totaler, I drink very little now and usually reserve it for special occasions (or surviving the in-law visits π). Cherry vodka though... that sounds yummy...and dangerous π€ͺ
I aim to be amusing, Sask! I have been rapidly going off the booze since running, and although I do love a good Sauvignon Blanc (or a cherry vodka), I love not feeling the after effects more. Itβs a running and an age thing I think...So saving it for special occasions too now - like surviving another week at work! π
Nah! Don't give up the drink altogether - imagine how good a cold glass of something delicious is going to be as you watch a Cornish sunset and re-live that day's run along the the beach π.
I donβt think thereβs any chance of me giving it up altogether, Deb! π Especially not on hols. I wish I lived by the coast so beach runs could be the norm...
Great long run Sandie. The alcohol issue is a tough one isn't it?! I am partial to a couple of glasses of wine and gin.
If I drink the night before a run, I try to keep it low and drink water with it plus a glass before the run which works but I don't think I've done that before a long run...
Thanks Crawlhome! Well, I thought I would be fine on 2 vodka and tonics, but fear my measures were maybe a little generous! π Maybe I should have had more water before bed...oh well, you live and learn, and I managed the full 10k so not all bad! x
Water is the key and remember every unit of alcohol takes one to one and a half hour to be metabolised, so give your body enough time to get it out of your system π
I have a bottle of cherry bakewell vodka in my fridge right now! I barely ever drink so admittedly it's been there a while. I'm off tomorrow though, maybe I'll have one later π€
Well, enjoy! Iβm mad for anything cherry flavoured. Work for me tomorrow, so no booze again until Friday. I am really enjoying drinking less at the moment. Though looking forward to a wee nip of vodka at the end of the week. π
Hi Sadie,I started the B210k at the start of (Sober for) October. I found no alcohol definitely improved my running,I simply cannot run if I've been drinking the previous night!
I never run quickly, but during October my pace went up about 3km/ph,totally without trying. Can't wait for Lent to start πππ
Haha...how have I missed this post?? Cherry Bakewell vodka? That sounds delicious but dangerous?! I don't drink anything like that, I'm a wine girl....and I like a pint...but try not to drink the night before a run coz when I have, my legs feel like they're just dragging me along! I wouldn't say you have to give up but maybe choose you're evenings more carefully!!! You don't want pulling over and breathalising by the running police haha xx
It's so delicious, Bev! I am a wine gal normally myself, but was getting a bit bored of my usual Sauvignon blanc, and I do love a gin and tonic or a vodka and tonic occasionally. I have cut down my alcohol quite dramatically since the new year, and feeling really good for it! π
I am now addressing my timing issue, you will be pleased to hear. So, allowing 2 drinks tonight, but none tomorrow, as I am planning a long run on Sunday. Look what a good girl I have become! Not drinking on a Saturday! It's a Christmas miracle! xxx
