Yes true for me as well quite often. I think that’s why I enjoy my longer runs at the weekend more. On a short run everything has only just settled down and you’re finished, but on a run of an hour or more you have lots of time where you’re just happily plodding along and all is well.

I totally agree with you Tony, love my longer runs.

Thanks for that Annie, it does make sense now

I’m guessing you guys have already read posts on the C25k forum referring to the “toxic 10”? ❤️

If not, without remembering all the correct details, it refers to the fact that everyone struggles when they start to run (sometimes for 10mins, hence the name, but it can be for less time or for much longer!) It’s something to do with the body getting up to speed with getting oxygen to the muscles and using it efficiently...(check other posts or Google for a correct / accurate discussion!😂)

I think this is why the fast runners at our Parkrun in fact run a fair distance to warm up and get through this phase before they even start the race.

Thanks, I'll definitely try to remember this. Even after four and a half months of running I still got suprised this week when I enjoyed running an 8k then struggled with 4k!

Yes it’s very odd isn’t it?

Yeah me too. I am so slow to get going despite a brisk warm up walk I warm up in the house too before heading out. 16 mins is the point at which I seem to get into the run Bit of a nuisance at Parkrun but never mind 🙂

Yes, we are just getting going on the parkruns, it is a nuisance

You just hit your stride and the darn thing's over. Doh!

I agree Agelesslass! I always start on deliberate go slow now. Not caring much about anything, just running slow. I enjoy it so much more when I take the time to warm up and get into the run. 👌🏽❤️

Totally agree. The first 10 minutes always seem like a chore and then the rest whizzes by, and then I notice I’ve been out for an hour 😁

We are all brilliant, aren’t we? We are out there and not sitting on our couches, we deserve lots of medals.

Definitely

That's me. Except sometimes the first km is ok and the second one harder. I think it depends on the terrain. My friend who is a marathon runner says she finds the first 20 mins hard. When she said that I was only doing half hour runs!

So pleased to see this tip as it is a struggle every time for me & I always have to force myself to keep going! Only just about managing 5k at the moment in about 35 mins so can only dream of running for a whole hour! Seems impossible but then so did 30 mins a few months ago. Love the inspiration on here from proper runners. Still don't feel I'm in that category! Thanks all.👍
