First 5k+ Run - Well, I didn’t expect that!

Hello All!

This quote was me before today. I didn’t think I was worthy of posting on this site until today. Up until now I hadn’t dared run over 5k, I had only run over 30 minutes to get to 5k at Parkrun. But today that all changed!

Part of my monthly Quest is to do a 5k+ Run every week, so I thought I would go for it today and just see what I could manage.

So I had to drop my son’s swimming stuff off with him at lunchtime, and thought I’d include it in my run. On Wednesdays he sits with his friends in the park so he was easy to find. It gave me a different start to my route. I ran to town, across the river, I ran to the park, dropped off the kit to my son (“that was my mum” he said to his friends as I dashed off 🤓), ran past the theatre, across the theatre gardens, past the church, past the garden I used to tend, down the old railway line, down to the racecourse, back to the river...on and on I went...

My wrist buzzed to tell me I’d done 10,000 steps on my Fitbit, on I went...continued up the road, passing the supermarket. Then, I got back into my little housing estate and thought it might be time to check my Strava... I WAS 10 SECONDS OFF RUNNING FOR 50 MINUTES! I HAD RUN 4.5 MILES! 😱😱😱

I have never, ever run that far or for so long in my life!

Ok, I know it was probably a bit too far, my right leg is certainly now telling me that🤭! But I know I can do it now I can run for over 5k, so next week I will be a bit more sensible and pull it back a bit. But boy it was fun!!!👍👍🤩😀😀😀🦆

Well Done TailChaser. That gave you a bit of a surprise ! All that consolidation must have made you ready for distance. Are you going to join us on the plan to 10k? You won’t have to start on week 1 now. 🏃‍♀️👏

Oooh, you’re right Dexy! That’s a thought. I will check it out and see what week might be suitable. First I will see what my legs are like tomorrow as my right is quite sore atm. I’ll probably judge it based on that. On the bright side, I can still get up the stairs easily, which is more than I could after my first Parkrun 😂 I’m about to attack it with the lumpy roller thing (it worked a treat on Sunday but my, my it hurts!), wish me luck 😫 🤸‍♀️

At least you can make it to your bed 😂

I’m meant to do 9k this week but my legs ached a bit after Monday’s 4k, so I’ve delayed it another day. I’ll try tomorrow but will play it by ear. I’m happy to leave it a week if it doesn’t feel right.

Wow! You’re doing incredibly well Dexy, you are an inspiration to me and to many others 🤗 I think I just chickened out a little, delaying and delaying and delaying. I need to have more belief in what my body can do I think. Good idea having a break though, it can work wonders. I had an extra rest day on Monday because of pushing myself on Saturday, did loads of core stuff and yoga yesterday, it really seemed to help today.

I’ve got youngest son back at Parkrun on Saturday so I now need to recover for that (bed sounds much more attractive than lumpy roller!)!

If you’d been on this forum earlier you would have probably have been doing 10k by now - they are a very persuasive bunch. 😁. But you had your own plan to do 5 k in 30 minutes and well done you on getting there. I’m on about 33:30 so have still got a bit to lose. I think the distance is helping though.

You could be right but I have back issues that I needed to make sure were not going to put me in the IC for months, so my aim was really to reassure myself that I was strong enough to keep going. I’ve done loads of core work and lost weight and the back is pretty good now, just the remnants down the right leg to look after. Now I’ve just got to force myself to slow down again 😂

Thanks Fab, you’re right 🙌 I don’t have a lot of confidence in what my body can do as it’s a bit creaky these days, however, it has amazed me this week so I’m feeling very accomplished and, yes, proud! 😀. Go us 👍👍👍😃🤸‍♀️🤗

Thanks Baddie, I’ve decided to start The Plan at Week 4 this week (I must be bonkers! I’ve been persuaded by many people over the last few days and just told to slow down!), so hopefully I’ll be high fiving you all very soon 🙌
