I don't think the two things are related, but the extra protein may have helped! I hadn't run for a week due to the heat, but it's cooled down today so I went out this morning.
Got to 8k, it was still hot and I have an ongoing blister problem - it heals between runs then starts to hurt again around the 2k mark. I now run wearing a blister plaster. I'm thinking of trying twin skin socks, does anyone have any experience of them? Or maybe I should get new shoes as it's where the upper meets the sole. But my Brooks adrenaline are so comfy otherwise!
I can't believe that I've been running for nearly a year now and haven't swallowed a fly before now! Yuk! I'm glad I was carrying water this morning! π

Well done! I only ever run in twin socks, I read an article some years ago that two pairs of thin socks are a great way to avoid blisters when walking a long way so I figured it was good for running too. I wear one normal pair and a trainer sock over the top. They are bamboo (great for running) and I buy them from Tesco's. I've only had two tiny blisters since I started running in May 2016 and that was when I did my - very slow - 10k a couple of weeks ago. Might be worth a try.
I bought some yesterday, am wearing them right now, and I can vouch that they are very comfortable. Just letting my dinner go down, then I'll take them for a test-drive.
Thanks Sandra, I'm trying small increments each time and that seems to be working for me!
Congrats on 8k especially in this heat! That fly was probably looking for somewhere to cool down... But sorry about those blisters! - They get me too unless I pre-prepare. I've now got a whole pre run ritual with my lovely pure shea butter - vaseline works the same. I put great wadges on all the problem areas and it totally stops the blisters. And I've been wearing double layer socks since early on too, really recommend these. Although I'm curious about pollyp1's approach - will definitely look at her suggestion of two thin socks. My double socks are all karrimor except for one special runbreeze pair that I save for best Socks are important
Forward planning?? I've had the shea butter for years, a friend brought it back from holiday. Now I finally have a use for it! When it runs out I'll replace it with vaseline
Whoop whoop! That's fab Joy, well done to you. Especially in this weather.
When the flies go straight down your throat you don't taste them π As long as they're dead though. Don't fancy the idea of them flapping around in my tummy π
Can't help on the socks as I've never had blisters but I have had double lined More Mile socks which were very good. Hope you get it sorted out.
A Vaseline smear is very handy. I had a chafing run vest and a smear of Vaseline did the trick. I use it on my feet all the time. I keep a separate small pot for my lips
There was an old er young lady who swallowed a fly! Just think of where that fly had been before you swallowed it! No! Don't!π
Blisters! Hmmm, can be a swine! You could try Vaseline or compeed, body glide. Twin skin socks work with the 2 layers rubbing together and not your skin, I find them a tad warm in the Summer, but maybe worth trying for you.How is the fitting of your shoes? Not too tight are they. Have a look at this link.. blisterprevention.com.au/bl...
I have the Brooks Glycerine, excellent shoes..π
Thanks Dave! Yes, I'd rather not think about where the fly had been. I'm still here, and not ill at all....
I am now wearing a compeed during each run but it still happens. It really is at the edge of my big toe joint where the sole meets the upper. I've had the shoes since October and this has only recently started happening. I don't think they are too tight.
BTW I am amused that the site tagged the word 'adrenaline' in my original post!
I always run with hilly twin skins and so far have been blister free. Hopefully I haven't jinx'd myself now! Not sure I fancy swallowing a fly......wasnt there a song 'the old lady who swallowed a fly....' Well done on the 8k!
Thanks rfd - when I posted I was thinking of Hillys - only because my daughter asked for a couple of pairs for Christmas. They are pricey, but I'm thinking probably worth it if they prevent further problems. I'm planning to pop into the running shop tomorrow.
