Wanted to get out early before it got to hot, the target was 14k , I was out and started running by 7.15 am, Still cool and the morning mist slowly clearing,
All good up to 6k, the run to 7 k was going to be a slight incline all the way , Still running ok, that extra km did seem very long but got there and turned around but that is when it all started to go Pete tong.
Energy starting to flag, legs heavy, quads complaining and starting to generally feel rubbish, tried to run through it got to 8k ok but not feeling any better, carried on to 9.32km and that was that, dead in the water , spent and really not feeling good .
Had a long walk back to my car to drive home, gulped my water down and my protein bar , so glad to get back home.even 3 hours later still feelin pretty Shite!
Made the right decision to stop running ,disappointed yes but still a 9k run in 1:02:06 and a 5k walk ..
Going to do nothing for the rest of the day, hopefully it is just one of those days/runs certainly have never felt so rubbish on a run before, time to take stock and all being well be back at it next Sat for 14k.
Just goes to show, you can never tell what sort of run you are going to have or how you are going to feel.
If you're still feeling dodgy, it sounds like a good idea you stopped. After my 10 miler where I felt naff , I did 12.5k yesterday and felt like a different person. No idea why. Hopefully you'll be back on track next week. Keep at it ☺
It would be good to know the reason(s) why a particular run was harder than usual but unfortunately we usually just have no idea. Some days I have felt dead tired and dragged myself out for a run which went surprisingly well; other times you don't anticipate any problems but the run turns out to be a real battle. Don't think my run is going to becgreat today. Usually I run early Sat morning but today I cycled an hour, played tennis, cycled back and still have my run to do. I think it'll be a short one but any run is training Rob, isn't it? So it must all be for the good.
yatesco is spot on. Think about what you did accomplish. It was great! Then think about what you could change for next week to try for a better experience. Maybe you ran a couple of days ago and overdid it? Maybe you needed to start out slower? Whatever the reason, you'll figure it out. Sometimes there isn't one- it was just one of those things. You'll be fine next time!
Hey Slow_Rob👏😊, well done on your long run - virtual hugs from this run buddy winging it's way to you.
Oh How I hate that hitting the wall feeling! Such a good run for you up to 6k - was it that km incline that used up the fuel in the fire.?
You did very well to carry on through the blip and on a different day I bet you've seen yourself bounce back and recover... Some runs go like yours did this morning - and I'm sure once you've recovered from it you'll bank all the positives and strategies for the next run. You've analysed your run well!
I always have to take a bit of fuel on board at around the 2.5m mark because I dip and start to feel sluggish at mile 3 to 4... And early morning runs and what to have for breakfast and at what time....etc really challenge me.
Hope you've recovered , refuelled & rested....got any Epsom salts?
Sounds like one of 'those' runs Rob, and a shame as I know it's all been going so well for you. Bet after a couple of days rest you will be fine again. Funnily enough, I went out on a 5k before breakfast this morning, and for some reason that felt hard! I was happy with my pace and time but it just seemed to require a lot more effort than usual! Still, a run's a run, I guess!
Well.. speaking personally.. I think it was great! 9 K in an hour...then a 5K walk..sounds pretty good to me!
Maybe you are just off form.. change in the weather..or, as you say...
It was, one of those runs that you get now and then...you start off just fine and that's the time when, your legs feel like lead, there's a pain in your head...( sorry, it was turning into a song.)
I think you were very wise to listen to your body Rob. You did brilliantly but I know it's disappointing when you have planned a certain length of run and then it just doesn't happen. It was warm out today so maybe that was a factor.
I'm sure you'll be back to normal form in a few days. Sending you soothing yoga type vibes. ✨✨
Not_so_slow_rob, you ran 9k in 1hr02, that's bloomin' brilliant. Think you did absolutely the right thing in deciding to call it a day when you did. I wonder what the problem was. Perhaps you're coming down with something, or maybe you weren't fuelled up enough or a bit dehydrated. Who knows? The running gods just weren't smiling this time. All being well you'll have a cracking run next time xxx
Just never know how these runs are going to go sometimes Rob, just put that one down to experience and look forward to the next one, sure it's just one of those things. Have a nice restful Sunday and relax and recouperate.....👍😊
I was recently reading a running coach who advises his athletes to gauge their energy levels before doing a run - then to shape the run to that energy level. Even elite athletes suffer from varying daily energy levels - this is because they are human animals and not machines !!
The same happened to me yesterday. I set out for 9.3 miles, but the heat was really against me, so i said to myself, ok- just get to 6.2 miles, but as I continued, I was struggling and close to home, so called it quits at 5 miles.
Definitely the right thing to do. I need to find a way to carry water with me that's not annoying for me.
