Throat tension :(
it's common for your throat to feel tight when you are anxious.
try to concentrate on steady breathing, relax you shoulders, and take things one step at a time.

Hi
Like you have said your throat feels tense , anxiety & stress
I to have had these feelings , sometimes I feel things get stuck in my throat & I cant swallow them & have to spit them out
Its anxiety , i wait , let it pass & see it as what it is tension , eat little amounts , cut your food small & chew it well , sips of liquids , & before you eat try & feel as relaxed as you can , sometimes i watch tv while i am eating as it distracts me
It doesnt stop me from talking ....bet my hubby would be happy if it did
You are not alone with this feeling but the more you fear it the worse it will feel

I find mint helps me when I get this as it eases any underlying heartburn etc.
As WhyWhy said, it is a typical symptom of anxiety and it WILL pass
Hi,
I too struggled to eat food, and ended up losing quite a bit of weight. It felt like food was stuck in the side of my throat when i swallowed even small pieces of food and at one stage, I went down to eating soups, milkshakes or pasta as these were easier to swallow. I saw my doctor about it as I was convinced that I had a growth in my throat or something. I had a camera through my nose and down to my throat (which was a feat in itself with my fear of not being able to breathe) and they found nothing. It was only when I started CBT at the local hospital that it was explained to me that this feeling is caused by anxiety. I was shocked and relieved at the same time. I still have issues with a fear of choking but its easier now i understand it. I only struggle with eating in public places now (i worry I will show myself up in public when gagging) and i eat slowly and cut my food really small. Always have a glass of water nearby when eating. As for the tongue issue, the anxiety does make it feel like your tongue is too big for your mouth and I too worry that i might swallow my tongue and choke. Anxiety makes us irrational and panicky. In reality, apparantly its quite difficult to actually swallow our tongue. At bedtimes when i lay on my back my tongue feels too big and i sometimes start to feel panicky but now when i notice this feeling I just turn on my side and the feeling goes away. x
Hi, I wasn't sure if I was the only one, but I get it too. Never really suffered with it but i've had it the last month..or so. It must be anxiety 'cause i had a bad tense feeling in my throat the day before my birthday and it was really uncomfortable and it hurt, to the point where i was almost crying and it nearly brought on an attack because i was working myself up and i started almost shaking and pins and needles were coming on so i just calmed myself down, and did deep calm breathing. I couldn't eat properly and my mouth hurt. It really got me down. I thought i was going to have to maybe go into hospital. I've suffered with anxiety for years and I was diagnosed with GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder) and i suffer anxiety/panic attacks. I've had it most of my life. I'm new to this btw, i don't write on here much but it's nice to see some other peoples' stories. I have them in my email but it's too busy to go through all of them. I'm sorry to hear you're feeling like this. It isn't very nice. I would just put it down to anxiety. When you feel it coming on, or if you do,.. just calm yourself, relax and deep breathe and tell yourself it will go. It will calm it at least. I'm just hoping mine goes away soon. Talk to you again at some point. x
Thank you! It is so horrid, but reassuring to know that other people with anxiety suffer from it to! I have had GAD for a long time as well! I used to get an awful feeling in my throat all the time, to the point where I couldn't talk! I don't get it that bad anymore, but I do wake up in the night in a panic with it feeling all tense. I will take your advice, thank you again
Hi All, I'm a Professional Hypnotherapist/counselor-Fitness Trainer-Holistic Health & Well-being practitioner,EFT practitioner. This is one of the most common symptoms people say they experience. There is a range of tools I use with myself and client that you may find useful:
1) Breath deeply into your stomach for 5 mins each hours( This Re-sets your normal and natural breathing cycle and relaxes your body and mind
2) Use EFT emotional freedom techniques to reduce & release the emotions and events behind the problem
3)Seek Professional Help from a Hypnotherapist to RE-FRAME the root cause of the tension the your throat. (Remember almost all behavior is learnt from somewhere)
