Is your memory affected by anxiety and depression
Hi samthedog
Yes this is very common when suffering with anxiety & depression
There is so much going on in our minds , i think we over load it & then it cant withold everything , so we start forgetting , well thats how it works with me
Welcome to the site , when you want just post on here , if you would like to tell us more you are welcome to
I have found the more I let the good people on here no about me , the more they can relate to me & there is so much support
whywhy x
Thanks thats good to know
Yes sam, I think it does. I just tried to make hot chocolate and forgot to turn the gas on, then I opened the fridge to put the hot chocolate tub away! I think that when we are suffering from anxiety/depression, then our heads are so full of worry that we forget to think about some of the other things, if you see what I mean.
Best Wishes
Ann
Thanks
hi, welcome to the site.
Yes, anxiety and depression does affect memory and concentration. I try to read books, but cant concentrate long enough on them, also i forget what iv read and have to re-read it. Drs appointments, i have to write them down on my calender or i will forget. Sometimes, i forget what iv gone into a room for and most scarily, i forget what day it is, especially when i wake up in the morning, which has happened a few months now, confusion much, but getting better x
thanks
It's so easy to forget thungs when you are anxious or in a panic and it feels horrible. I generally find when I have calmed down enough I've either forgotten what was worryng me or can remember because I am calmer. Hope you feeling beeter soon.xxx
And this site is great, haven't been here long myself but it's just full of people who know exactly how you feel and can relate to you and help you.
I think you have your answer there Sam, I do all sorts of daft things because of forgetfulness! I laugh at it though, have to or else I'd cry. I forget dates , times, appointments....you name it x Ella x
Definitely a yes on this one then ey! I've been doing the same job for 6 years, i used to be nicknamed the 'Guru', now i can't even answer the most basic of questions! Frightening but it did set my mind at ease a little looking around the forums and realising im not alone in this. It really hinders how i function in everyday life but heres hoping it will get better x
Hi. sam. And welcome. Patient. "Doctor, I am suffering from short term memory loss". Doctor, "How long have you had it?" Patient, "How long have I had what?". Sorry if this sounds facetious but as ella says, we have to laugh at ourselves sometimes. Seriously, and I am not diminishing this frightening symptom for one moment, but this is VERY COMMON in anxiety and NOTHING to worry about. Of course anxiety affects the memory because we become introspective and live in a world of our own. Outside events and even things close to us get 'swamped' by how we feel. This is not just a symptom of the elderly but can affect ANYONE with anxiety. As you recover the memory returns to normal. It does you know, even if, at the moment, it is so frightening. Dont try and force yourself to remember. Make notes and if you forget where you put them see the funny side. I lost a lot of notes when I was ill, but strangely could remember what I had put on them!!!. Regards. jonathan.
Thanks that made me smile.
Hi Sam, Yes Definitely affects short term memory! When I was at my worst with depression & anxiety, I used to find it really stressful not remembering things, So I just wrote everything down. Now I still get it on the odd occasion, and I just have little giggle to myself and forget about it. Trust us it does get better x x x
