Has anyone taken Mertazapine for anxiety

I admit I have anxiety. But some of the physical symptoms I have are strange and it's still hard to believe that's what it is. Like the continual sore throat and lumps inside my lip area that no one else seems to be able to feel but me. Now the Dr has prescribed Mertazapine. I had them before but didn't give them a chance because I'm scared they will make me feel worse. Has anyone else taken them?

Hi Den, I have been on Mirtazapine for about 7 years. I have never had any problem with the 15 mgm prescribed. Gave me a good nights sleep for several years but effect has worn off now for sleep. Never put on any weight( did watch my snacking tho) .I have IBS also and was fine.

gave me strange dreams first couple of weeks, like wide awake dreams.

Yea…. I actually quite liked the vivid dreams and could remember them next morning! They settled down after a while too.

Hi, I started on 15mg of Mirtazapine (Remeron) a month ago. It is the type that disolves uder the tongue. The only temporary "odd" reaction I get from it is that my lips & tongue go numb for about 25 min. after it disolves. I have noticed my morning "fear" and the shaking has very much so lessened. Some nights they help me to sleep too. I did have vivid dreams to start but they have since stopped.

I haven been on 15mg mirtazapine for 11 weeks now. Everyone seems to experience different side effects ( no matter what med it is? ). The first month or so, I experienced a sporadic 'light headiness/dizziness' ..maybe lasting 15-20 seconds at a time. That has pretty much gone. But, heading into week 5-6 I began to have joint/muscle stiffness (hands/toes/ankles/hips/knees...not all at once and not every day) mostly an ache (but no pain). You can do a search " mirtazapine and joint pain " and find several clinical studies that confirm this as a side effect ---for some. I also gained some weight since being on it. But, I had lost quite of bit of weight due to my episode of extreme anxiety(some depression ) from March to August, so I was happy to put the weight back on. But, now have to watch that. I have never had any 'vivid dreams'. I had a phone consultation with my Dr. a week ago and told him, for now, my sense of well-being, motivation and almost zero anxiety far outweighs the physical side effects, We agreed to re-assess things once I get through the winter. I take the 15mg @ 10pm -- go to bed (right to sleep) @ 11p. It does have a 'sedating' effect at the lower doses so I have no problem falling and staying a sleep. But, as I told the Dr. " I sleep" but it is not a very 'refreshing' sleep. Again, considering the desperate mental state I was in 'pre-mirtazapine' I am willing to put up with that. (Dr had me on 50mg of sertaline(Zoloft) for a month prior to the Mirt --but didn't work for me. )

By day 10 on the mirtazapine - everything changed - for the better as far as my mental health.

Thank you for all the replies. I have started taking 15 mg at bedtime now I am sleeping better but it takes me time to come round in the morning. Took it an hour before bed. Dr suggests I take it earlier. I ache all over but not sure if it's meds or my arthritis as the weather is wet and it's very damp outside at the moment which usually makes it worse.

Mirtazapine made me hungry as ever! I know it was from that because it couldn't have been anything else. I stopped them after only a few days. Weight gain? No thank you. I've got enough to deal with as it is.🙄

I have now been on the 15mg mirtazapine for three months. I experience the same 'ache all over' feeling you described and it does take me a while to 'get going' in the morning. I don't have arthritis. I'm afraid it is the 'side effect' I (we?) are experiencing. Not everyone has the same side effect(s). For now, the mental advantage outweighs the stiff/achey joints/muscles. My Dr and I agreed , winter is not the time to come off the med. Of course, if the physical discomfort gets to the point of impacting my daily life, that would change. For now, I'm willing to go another 3-6 months before reassessing. Take care.
