Choked today

Bad day today folks. Been suffering some dysphagia for the past few weeks (not sure why). I was drinking a smoothie and somehow started choking. Had to get brother in law to give me the heimlich. Scary stuff, but recovered within about 30 seconds. Having been wrestling with a fear of choking for nearly a decade I forced myself to eat a sandwich for dinner, which did stick somewhat in my throat. The toughest thing is not knowing whether this is psychosomatic or a real issue. GI tomorrow. I do have a hiatal hernia...might be time to get it fixed. God bless all of you!

Hi Rdiz777, I'm glad you will be seeing the GI doc tomorrow. You'd be surprised in how

psychosomatic issues can cause tightening of the esophagus w/o any medical reason.

I had that myself some years ago. Tests were negative. I too have a hiatal hernia which

doesn't have anything to do with choking which happens further up in the throat.

Good Luck with your appointment tomorrow. Please let us know how it turned out

Thank you, my understanding is the hiatal hernia can create more pressure on the upper esophageal sphincter and can also cause pressure issues that can make food regurgitate

Always listen to your doctor's advice and findings.

Fortunately for me this has never been a problem.
