Hello I have anxiety. I always feel worse before better . Hope you feel better soon. X
Thank you hope so to
Benzodiazepine are the most effective med for anxiety, Use as needed. Some will say stay away there adding.
Well I say they work and if I become dependent on a medication that works and I feel normal again then I’ll take that chance. Otherwise enter the SSRI rollercoaster. That said I’m sure ssri work for some but most I’ve talked to say never again and they sick with a benzodiazepine.
I would sooner try the SSRI rollercoaster because they are more recommended by various psychiatrists. Keep trying different ones until you find one that agrees with you.
I’ve tried them all over the last 30 years. The issue with anxiety is lack of Gaba benzodiazepine fill that Ssri and SNRI work on serotonin and norepinephrine, that works great for depression and ocd not anxiety. Benzodiazepine have been around for decades and are safe taken as prescribed. There’s no money being made with benzodiazepine for 2 reasons Dr won’t see you with complaints because the meds work so well and 2 there cheap to buy and the drug companies make a lot more on antidepressants. Think about how many antidepressants are on the market and how many people try without success. Ssri cause brain zap, heightens suicide attempts , weight gain.
Benzodiazepine work great and are very safe. Dr are making money keeping you in a cycle of coming back trying new Ssri , I’ll stick with what works for the condition of anxiety not depression.
Benxodiazepinesare addictive if used long term people then develop a benzo dependency which is similar to alcoh dependency which is not good for us. I have tried Pregabalin a Gaba drug but it didn't agree with me at all so I had to come ofd it ever so gradually but it was horrible. The best SSRI that eorks for me is Escotalopram.
I’m also on pregabalin for a pain medication I have torn rotator cuffs. I was reading up on it and noticed it’s used off label for anxiety. I’ve taken lexapro I just gained 40lb. I’ve never had a problem with xanax and I’ve been on it as needed for 30 years. I think the issue with it is when a person abuses a benzodiazepine I would agree with you. But I gotta tell you I know lots of people on a benzodiazepine and none of them abuse it or have had an adverse reaction. I respect your opinion on benzodiazepine. That said the main reason these meds get a bad reputation is the people that abuse them. I speak for me when I say I’ve been taking them for 30 years and I can go days without taking them.
Best wishes
I have terrible anxiety and an ssri has helped me tremendously. It has been proven in many studies to help anxiety. Benzos and antidepressants are not completely safe drugs but your much more likely to OD on a benzodiazepine. Benzos are much more likely to be abused. I'm glad the benzodiazepines are working for you though.
I agree about the benzos. I was prescribed Xanax and was told I could take them 2x a day as needed for anxiety. I very rarely took them and then covid happened. I took them twice daily as PRESCRIBED and it was terrible. I began experiencing withdrawals even while on the medication because my body wanted more of it and I became dependent on it and the Xanax had the reverse effect. It started causing panic and and anxiety. I went to a psychiatric hospital for what I thought was severe depression. (Granted I do have depression) but I had to be detoxed off my Xanax and the detoxing is one of the most scary things I have ever endured.
Some people can take them as prescribed and be ok as medication effects everyone differently but it only takes 3 days for your body to become addicted to it and that’s taking it as prescribed. I was told that by 3 therapists and 2 doctors. The psychiatrist I saw in the hospital told me he doesn’t prescribe them because of how addictive they are. Xanax is the worst one but there are antidepressants that can help with anxiety.
I myself do not like taking medication like that but the times we live in right now I have come to terms with the fact that I need them right now
I did take klonopin back when I was having panic attacks when I came off my ssri cold turkey. It did help me get through the panic attacks until my SSRI started working again. Mostly the klonopin would just make me fall asleep so I dont know how I would've functioned on them long term. Sorry you had that rough experience. That sounds like one of my worst nightmares. Hopefully your feeling better now.
What SSRI do you take that works?
Sertraline
See I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work for me, I’m so tired of sleeping and no matter how much I sleep I still wake up feeling like I got hit by a train so very exhausted.
How long did you try it for? It didnt really work well for me until I started my thyroid medication. My mood improved dramatically in just a few days. A psychiatrist can prescribe cytomel which is a thyroid hormone. Its definitely worth looking into. Waking up exhausted is a big symptom of hypothyroidism.
They tested my thyroid and everything comes back normal
Did you get a full thyroid panel test?Free t3, free t4, crucial vitamins, TSH. Most doctors will just judge by TSH, which is inadequate.
I have had a c3 and c4 done , I have had like 10 tsh test done. What kind of crucial vitamin test?
A psychiatrist can still prescribe it to you even if your thyroid appears normal. The testing for thyroid is very poor. Theres a forum on healthunlocked called Thyroid UK and you will see plenty of stories of misdiagnosis. It's an epidemic.
B12, ferritin, vitamin D, folate. If these levels arent high enough then it will alter your tsh, t3 and t4 levels.
Anyways if you feel like nothing is working or everything is working too slowly, I would definitely start with the thyroid. I went undiagnosed for about 15 years. I'm 28 now. My doctors all said everything is okay. Then finally after a drug overdose I was in the ER and my TSH shot through the roof. If I had never had that overdose I would still be in your position. Possibly dead. Definitely miserable.
