I have been on Escitalopram 5mg for just over 2 weeks now, prior to that I was experiencing a burning sensation within my body, starting low down and spreading up through me and into my arms. I still get this every morning, varying in intensity. Has anyone else experienced this as a symptom of anxiety and did it go away after the escitalopram kicked in?

Hi Rose.
This sounds like the symptoms of a panic attack and usually caused by hyperventilating. Try concentrating on your breathing when this happens again with slow deep breaths and see if it calms down.
I’ve had this twice and when I started to worry about it it increased in intensity. I didn’t know what the hell it was at first which made it worse but now I understand anxiety a lot more it is easier to control.

Hi, Ste2, thanks for your reply - apologies for delay getting back to you. Doesn't feel like a panic attack, not that I have ever experienced one. The burning sensation wakes me up early most mornings and has been worse lately. My breathing is not affected and I do not have any feelings of hyperventilation. Will keep you posted with any further events. I can't believe I'm the only one out there experiencing this.
You need to give the meds time and for me it took a good 6/8 weeks until I felt properly better. Good luck 😊
Thanks for your reply, s_l_f, also apologies for delay getting back to you. Last few days burning sensation has been getting worse, lasting longer. Did you experience this as a symptom of anxiety or anyone else that you know experience it? Now been on the medication for almost a month and not feeling any better. How was it for you after that time? I will stick with it, but 6 - 8 weeks seems a long time at the moment. If I could just find out what the burning was about and know that it go would be a great help. Thanks again.
I didn’t experience any burning sensation. Everyone really does seem to have different reactions based on their physiology but the message is that in 90% of the time if you stick with it, they go. You can see the reviews on drugs.com. How are you doing now? 😊
I've been on 5 mg of escitalopram for 8 weeks and changed up to 10 mg last Saturday. Burning sensation went away a few weeks ago, but still get the time although it doesn't last very long. Had a wobble on Tuesday, shaky and wobbly legs, odd sensations in my head. Thought it was side effects from change up to 10 mg, but seems to have settled down again now. Just wish the legs would be normal and not feel like I'm walking on ice. Thanks for your concern, how are you progressing?
Hi Rose
I’m now doing fine. I started mid May and am on 10mg and feel pretty good. No anxiety at all. I hope you continue to improve 😊
I think its normal side effect. I had experienced the same thing at least thrice before the meds really sets in. Been on 10mg for almost 2 months now and i should say i am much at normal state now. If i can recall, the burning sensation would last for a couple of seconds as if it just passed by. Just don’t panic be calm as it happens. It will go away really quick. Godbless to all of us undergoing this ordeal.
