ANXIETY & PTSD ? Always Remember "THE LEMON EFFECT" > [ true story ]

Let's Say You Meet A Doc For The First Time. Let's Say You Sit Down, They Check Your Vitals & The First Question They Ask You Is:

Do You Like Lemons ?

Like Me, You'd Most Likely Think, "That's Odd" ? We Just Met & That's The First Thing You Ask Me ? Then If You're Like Me, You May Say Sure ! Kinda. [ just being polite ]

So This Doc Says, " My Wife Packed Me A Lunch But That Lemon Is Huge & I Can't Eat It All That By Myself ." I'll Half It With You A Little Later.

So, We Continue On With Questions & Conversations Concerning My Conditions, & He Wants Me To Come Back In At A Later Date. Then Right Before We Get Up & I Get My Coat He Says :

"Wait ! Sit Back Down. I Almost Forgot Our LEMON !

So He Pulls Out His Pocket Knife & Says, " I'll Roll It & Make It Nice & Juicy ".

So He Rolls His Chair To His Desk, Starts Opening All The Drawers & Says, " Do You See That Lemon In That Drawer ?" I Must Be Overlooking It. So You Get Up & Look In His Drawer & You Don't See It Either. Then He Asks You To Sit Back Down.

He Looks At You With This Big Grin On His Face....

He Says, " I Watched You Very Closely. " Your Feet Started Moving As Your Toes most Likely Curled A Little, I Saw Your Muscles Tense Up, & Even Noticed You Salivated A Little. You Had Some Twitching, And Your Mouth Smacked About Ten Times More Than Usual In Our Conversations Over This Period Of Time. My Pulse Rate & BP Was Higher Than When I First Came In. He Said, "He Knew It Would Be".

The "Sub Conscious Mind" Is EXTREMELY Powerful !*

My Body Was In Auto Mode Getting Ready For That "Sour" Blow From A LEMON That Didn't Even Exist !*

So, When You Experience "Physical Problems" From Anxiety & PTSD ?

It's NOT Just All In Your Mind. Your Symptoms Are Real !

It May Not Be A Lemon. But It Could Be Your Sub Conscious Not Feeling Safe In A Situation.

So My Friends. NEVER Be Ashamed To Go To Your Doctor or/ Hospital With Your Physical Symptoms Because They Are REAL.

True Story & Lesson Learned For Me. Loved That Doctor !*

Most physical symptoms of anxiety, PTSD or any other fear based disorder may well be real but the point is that they are caused by anxiety. If you fear the physical symptoms, you keep feeding your anxiety which creates more physical symptons, as well as intrusive thoughts, anorher common symptom. So, if your doctor and tests have ruled out serious illness, it is anxiety creating those symptons and all rooted in fear which is the underlying cause Therefore, recovery from anxiety, PTSD or any other fear based disorder is all about losing your fear if the symptoms and not constantly taking yourself off to A&E.

I beg to differ! In my humble opinion it is better to waste ten minutes of a Drs time than die because you didn't check it out! I have a great DR now yes I suffer anxiety "PTSD" some ailments may be caused through anxiety but not all, I have been told by the A+E DRs and my DR that they " Would rather spend ten minutes talking to a patient and examine them if nothing is found chat to them as there is always an underlying cause, Anxiety being one of the Many reasons, but not always the reason,it's better to check a patient out when it is anxiety we find the reason behind being anxious then treat the anxiety! Anxiety like any other ailments whether it's tonsillitis or any other physical or mental illness is still an illness and any DR worth His/Her salts would rather examine you whilst you are living rather than fill out forms for a Coroner" unquote

Sorry, i think you missed my point. Like i said, so long as your doctor has ruled out any serious underlying medical condition, it it is highly likely that a fear of the symptoms of anxiety will mean repeated appointments with their doctor, seeking reassurance that there is nothing wrong. I know, I've been there and visited my doctor several tines convinced that I was seriously ill and about to pop my cloggs. Despite him trying to reassure me that I was fit and healthy, I didnt believe him (more ro the point, my anxious, irrational part of my brain didnt believe him). That was a few years ago now and through my learning and experience since those visits, i discovered it was anxiety all along which was producing anxious thoughts that told me i was ill.

I do understand that some lllnesses, such as hyperthyroidism can cause anxiety but in the majority of cases, anxiety is caused by stress and suffering is prolonged simply because the person has become fearful and pre-occupied with the symptoms of anxiety. I could not really tell whag caused me to develop anxiety but do know that i kept it going by fearing the symptoms of anxiety and giving too much respect to those intrusive thoughts, which were just a figment of an overly tired and anxious mind.

I have on occasion been told ,it's nothing to worry about, then within 24hrs ended up having full blown panic attack and being rushed to hospital thinking and the ECG looking like I'm having one, my apologies as well, I think I only saw what I wanted to see in your post I missed the bit where you said if your Dr had cleared you.all I saw was the constantly going to A+E sorry

Never I did get the point but I honestly (No offence meant, lose your fear by all means but never think going to A+E is wasting time or money)do not agree I am constantly in Hospital a+E included I don't like going there but am most of the time told to go there either by my DR or by 111 ,this is in reply to an email I received stating I missed the point,I got the Ops point and your point .although I agree to a point I don't agree about not going to hospital if you feel it warrants it .Sorry if I have offended that is not my intention

No offence taken Delzek. Anxiety will have someone believe they are really ill when all along it is just anxiety creating those irrational thoughts.

I try to avoid stress as I believe that is the cause of my anxiety,

Yes. Stress is certainly the cause. Depending on what causes the stress is obviously the root cause which may be possible to resolve such as forming a different viewpoint.

Too much stress over a period of time sensitises the involuntary nervous system that regulates emotions. Those emotions can become extreme / magnified and alarm the person to the extent that they then become fearful of what they are feeling. A small problem can then seem huge. A small fear can become overwhelmingly terrifying. When fear enters the equation, the person unwittingly gets caught up in the anxiety cycle because fear generates the very same feelings that they feared in the first place.

For me, recovery was about going towards those places and situations that caused me severe stress. I had no safe haven as i felt distressed all the time, regardless of where i was or what i was doing. Pretty horrendous as I'm sure you will know. Anyhow, by going towards those fears and not avoiding anything, my nerves gradually desensitised and the anxiety melted away bit by bit.

Not sure what time it is where you are but ir is well past my bedtime so i will wish you a very good night.

Best wishes

Please Realize That The Story I Told Was Eye Opening To Me As To What "Trigger Points" Were. Fear IS The True Enemy We Face Here & Dread Is Another Form Of Fear Also. The Point Made About Not Being Ashamed To Go To A Doc With Any Physical Conditions Comes From First Hand Experiences, Over Years Realizing That MANY Doctors, Once They Find Out You Have An Anxiety Disorder, Mentally Put You In A Box & Chalk Most Of Your Ailments To Anxiety Only. I've Had SEVERAL Real Physical Problems Over Long Periods Of Time That Where Finally Diagnosed As A "Real Condition". When MANY Of The Doctors I Complained To, Chalked It Up To Anxiety When It "WAS" An Actual Physical Problem Which Could Have Been Found With Just A Little More Extensive Effort .
