Heart Rate Monitor App

Hey guys, Are heart rate monitor apps accurate? I feel like sometimes I take it and it is correct around the usual number the doctors measures me at then other times the little line is up and down so drastically and I’ll be just laying down and it’ll jump from high to low numbers. Maybe it’s a glitch on the app?

JackJills, the h/r and b/p are always changing from moment to moment. Not a glitch just a part of the human anatomy doing it's thing. :) xx

Thanks so much Agora for your quick response! 😊 I had to close and open the app a few times cause it was at like 130 then dropped to almost 80 then went up a bit so strange all within a matter of seconds. Usually at my dr it reads about 80-84bpm! Which I consider pretty good. Thank you for your information and help as always. Much appreciated xx

JackJills, I did blood pressure readings at the Fire Station for years. It's the people who have a problem that don't even know it. Try not to focus on it. xx

Oh okay :) and sorry but what do you mean by “It’s the people who have a problem that don’t even know it”? Do you mean I have a problem? Sorry just don’t know what u meant xx

I'm sorry...I didn't explain that well enough. We monitor ourselves too much but the people who should be don't even have an inkling to what their pressure is. A man walked into the station with his wife. It looked fine and felt great. His pressure didn't even register it was over 300/260. The paramedics took him into the ER where he was treated with b/p medication and was fine.

As being anxious, we tend to focus in too much on our vitals. It is not necessary but maybe once a week if not less. It only adds to our stress which can show false readings.

Thank you so much for taking the time to clarify! I understand what you mean. So it’s good in a way to be aware of it but also just occasionally check don’t do it everyday essentially. That makes sense and I can certainly see how that could add to the worries of us anxiety sufferers. Thank you for your reply. It means so much xx :)

I'm glad that helped some JackJills, don't want to add more fuel to the fire. :) The more we understand how our bodies work, the easier it becomes to reduce our anxiety and worry. xx

Also the more frequently you take it at one time, the more it will change. Relaxation though for all of us is harder for us though. So many things can cause changes in your heart rate. Caffeine, sleeping, resting, anxiety etc. Payer closer attention only if you are having other serious symptoms along with it.

Totally agree when we feel anxious we go looking for explanations why we are feeling bad.checking pulse and blood pressure only adds to the anxiety. As we all know when we are feeling anxious Bp and heart rate goes up.when we are relaxed it returns to normal.

Think it’s a Glitch on the app as that heart rate app on my phone that you put your finger over has jumped from 110-160bpm and I know that’s not right and it’s a glitch and from ECGs I know my heart rhythm is normal. So don’t take it as accurate and more of a guide as that line used to freak me out showing my heart rhythm but I noticed any little movement of my finger it would knock it off so I don’t rely on it. I only use the app every so often just to check my pulse if I feel it’s racing and it’s usually not. From my Fitbit my resting was 75bpm so that’s pretty normal.

Don't put that much stock into gadgets meant to check our vitals. Anything can make it jump from one number to another. It's the doctor's reading that counts. :) x The important thing is that it doesn't stay in a high reading for days on end.

Yeah I hear what you’re saying. Thank you! I used to have a Fitbit too but I’d obsessively check it so I stopped wearing it. I would like to get and Apple Watch or like a Nike Fuel Band we’ll see. Something to track it with again cause you’re right I think the apps glitch. I have Instant Heart Rate app on my phone that I use and yeah it’s the same where you put your finger over the camera lense. Everytime it’s such a different reading. Weird! Lol I guess I’ll just take it as a guide like you said thank you so much 😊

in reply to

Yeah I got rid of my Fitbit as it was making me worse and giving me panic attacks as I was always checking it, so I’ve sold it to stop me wearing it. I don’t try and think about my heart rate I don’t need to know it, I didn’t bother before and I was always fine before anxiety happened so I shouldn’t now, way I see it. If everything has come back fine from GP that’s all that matters. Used to have my blood pressure checked once a year for a supply of the pill and that was always normal so I’m fine, my parents always say as long as it’s still beating that’s all that matters.

in reply to

That makes sense yeah.

I got like that too with the anxiety always checking up on it. Usually I’ll check on mine whenever I get an uncomfortable sensation in my chest from the anxiety. Like right now it feels like I’m the centre of my chest it’s like tingly kind of and weakish feeling so I’ve been checking I’ve been laying on my side not sure if that’s anything to do with it I have it almost everyday lately at one point or another idk what it is.

in reply to

Yeah I do only check the app if I feel it racing I guess to get reassurance it isn’t and ok. The Fitbit wasn’t fully accurate and mine would drop from like 110bpm to 54bpm which used to freak me out. Also when I stood up all day used to worry why it was always over 120bpm so stopped using it. My anxiety is mainly my heart though and even though I’ve had loads of tests convinced they have missed something as I keep getting chest pains/ muscle twitching and tingly feeling in that area so use it to check.

Well, i can only say this much, i have been dismissed by 1 doctor for obsessing so much and calling so much about my heart rate and my OCD revolving around my FitBit, i still wear it but it for sure is the worst thing i probably have invested in.

If you want a really accurate BP measurement buy an Omron, but as everyone above says don't overdo it. Best of luck to you.

My mom uses one she says is very accurate but I’ve heard other people that have some that aren’t good. Unless you do have heart disease it is not good to check it too often. It causes way more anxiety. Without the appearance of other symptoms it’s better not to dwell on it too much and instead try and work on relaxation techniques My mother goes into very serious hear rhythms and when she feels it she checks hers and I have had to take her to the hospital for cardioversion. If you don’t need to try not to focus on it and try some relaxation.
