Have 2 appointments at the psych office. It’s frustrating because it’s like these “experts” never listen. Have any of you had these situations where you say I’m legitimately terrified of medication, and they dismiss you? They say something to the effect of my way or the highway. How is that helpful at all? It’s annoying to me and doesn’t help my stress level. I’ll have to see how long I can maintain my composure this time. Wish me luck.

Hello, the failure to communicate with someone about important matters or the ability to communicate and feel the other person does not care is a pitfall of verbal language, isn't it?
"Legitimately terrified of medication" are very powerful words. What would you like your doctor to do or to say when you use those words? Guess if you popped a mini mint in your mouth and then fell to the floor, that might get the message across.
Perhaps if you could use simple words and specific examples of why you are very leery of taking a specific medication and asked the doctor to explain how a medication, if any, he/she wants to prescribe, will work, your communication may improve.
At the moment you may feel medications are like trains. Trains can be death traps because you have heard about and seen movies about locomotives colliding and you're telling the doctor you "are legitimately terrified of trains". (that's what he/she is hearing) And your doctor is looking around his/her office thinking "What train?" while he/she was actually thinking about "medical band-aids" (very low dosage medication) that may help you.
Don't write your doctor off too soon. Could be you aren't speaking the same language. If all the above fails, try the popping the mini mint.
I think for me it’s more about a choice. My fear while probably irrational is still very real to me. At this point I would rather not try medication. However I’m finding that to get counseling that I do want I also have to meet with someone about a medication plan. I’m not ok with that. It shouldnt be that way. Maybe one day my views will change but right now I’m not there yet.
Where do you live that you must have a medication plan? That's nuts.
So the doctors DID UNDERSTAND what you were saying and didn't just blow you off. It appears the facility you have chosen for counseling has a protocol for medication planning. So YOU HAD A CHOICE to seek counseling elsewhere? This is an entirely different story than your post. You want the facility to change its protocol for you, and that's not going to happen.
OK, I understand. Is there another place that offers the type of counseling you seek without insisting on medication?
If you do not want medication, then you don't want medication.
Got it. Now how do you solve the challenge of finding the type of counseling you want? And what if that doesn't help?
I am just thinking outloud with you. I'll be here for awhile longer and wait for your reply....send it PM if you want.
With my insurance I’m extremely limited on where I can go. It’s not that there are no options it’s more that it takes months to get in. The place I’m at now is insistent on medication being a part of the treatment program. It’s just not something I want to do. I love the counselor though. So my dilemma is stay for her and blow smoke up the med mgmt people or leave. I’m on a few waiting lists.
I like the blowing smoke up their butts plan. Would your counselor help with that?
