Hey all. This is only my second post. Wondering if anybody can help. After months of feeling stressed, worrying for what feels like every second of the day, experiencing flu like symptoms (almost weekly!) and generally feeling a bit rubbish, I've finally promised to get myself to the doctors this week. But I don't know what to say?! How do you get the conversation going about anxiety - I'm worried they may think I'm self-diagnosing or just being dramatic. Any advice would be great. Thank you and big love to you all 🌻 xxx
What do I say to my doctor? : Hey all. This... - Anxiety Support
What do I say to my doctor?
Just be honest tell the doctor everything u are feeling hope all goes well
1. Do not be afraid to discuss things with your doctor as they go through many different scenarios in a days work on a daily basis so NOTHING is new to them usually.. 2. I self diagnose myself all the time and most times IM RIGHT about the diagnosis and it gets treated!
3. Lets say you are wrong about the diagnosis whats yhe worse that could happen? The doctor gets mad? Not gonna happen the doctor tells you never self diagnose yourself very possibly because he may not want you overthinking or to google your symtpoms
How should you start the coversation? Well for starters hes gonna ask or his nurses will ask what brings you in today and your gonna respond with well Im having flu like symptoms almost everyday im wonderin if its anxiety or an actual illness hes gonna ask you to describe your symptoms i great detail so be sure to have all the information written down incase you wanna go indepth so he has a good amount of information to base a diagnosis out of
Tell him everything no secrets hes there to help and treat now if its anxiety (most likely the case) hes gonna know how yo treat it and fix you up like a doctor would any body
Long story short just be open dont worry about being judged for self diagnosing yourself it shows your doing research and tying to understand your own body and the signs that your mind body are teling you nothing more nothing less
Namaste
At this point if you know you're basically wanting to address your anxiety and nothing else then just be honest about everything. I'd write down or make a list of what you want to say so you dont get in front of them and all of a sudden forget what all you want to make a point of.
It's ok they are used to people self diagnosing I told my doc exactly how I was feeling and for how long the feeling sick dizziness and bam he listened and now I'm on the road to recovery wish I would have done it much sooner!! Just make a list of everything you want to say that way your anxiety won't stop you from all the answere you want to get! Good luck
Print out your question and the reply's. Show it to him and it will open up a dialogue. Let us know how it goes.
Hi SB1993,
Everyone else has good advice. I would like to add that you should book a longer appointment so that there is enough time for you and the doctor to do the talking required. Be fair to the patients coming after you about arranging and sticking to the time required. Your goal at the end of the appointment should be a treatment plan and a follow up appointment within 2-3 weeks.
