NATURAL Sleep aids?

What are the safest and most effective NATURAL sleep aids? I've heard about Melatonin....Valerian Root.....GABA....and others. I've been good with .25 mg of Klonopin (yes .25!) every night.....but I want to get off of it.

Just kidding

Kinda

I am with you and the calcium and magnesium pill

I take a couple 4 hours before bed time

Calcium is the antagonist of magnesium. Magnesium relaxes the muscle, calcium the opposite.

If you want to sleep, relax and get the health benefits from magnesium, take it alone. If after you take it you don't like the relaxed high you get, simply drink a glass of milk. Within 30 mins you'll be back to how you were before you took it as the calcium will balance out the magnesium.

What form of magnesium do you take? Liquid? pills? dosage? brand? Thanks !

in reply toDylanD

I take 50 mg, half a tablet a day of Dr's Best Chelated Magnesium. I make my own oil from magnesium flakes bought from eBay. It's up to you on dosage as everyone is different, 50 mg is mega low and keeps me happy and relaxed. I've had higher doses but 50 is all i need.

Citrate and glycinate are for depression and anxiety, Chlorine for detox etc.

One thing to be aware of, it raises your libido you'll end up horny as hell !!.

On the oil bottle it says take 2, 2 times a day. DO NOT do that, to much to soon isn't good. Quarter a tablet to you just feel normal then half then a full one. If you don't like it a glass of milk will return you to normal pretty quick.

Pill bottle not oil in post above.

One other thing, if you're going to take it, take a multivitamin and iron tablet daily.

Thanks D. One thing....last week I bought a liquid supplement which has 300 mgs of magnesium (citrate) but also 600 mg of calcium citrate (plus some vit D3). But i understand that calcium counteracts magnesium....yes?

in reply toDylanD

Yes it counteracts magnesium. That is 2.1 ratio. Calcium will beat the magnesium outright there. You should buy separate forms, if you get enough dIary in your diet you not need extra calcium in pill form. We ingest to much calcium in modern diets. Citrate draws liquid into the gut which leads to loose stools, which leads to loss of minerals. You are best with glycinate which is highly absorbed and does not really cause the loose stool. Start very low !

Epsom salt bath with extra magnesium chloride. Have a look at the website by Dr Michael Breus the Sleep.Doctor - he also goes into what sort of sleeper you are and matches food you should eat in the evenings - proteins carba etc. It's not one size fits all.

Remember that these are just suggestions that you should ask your doctor about. Don't take anything without a real medical consult!

So right Darryl, just because things are OTC doesn't make them safe. It also depends on what medications you are on as to how they may interact.

CBD pot, epsom salt baths, vetiver essential oil, self-pleasuring (no joke), deep breathing, staying FAR away from electronics at least a few hours before bed - those lights mess with your sleep cycle.

If it's impossible to sleep, do not force it. Do something calming that doesn't involve caffeine or internet. Knitting, reading, writing, playing music, etc.

Good thoughts, thank you Bones_ . It's funny - i TELL myself to turn down the electronic stimuli before bed....but I'm a hypocrite because I don't follow through. On the flips side....when I wake up with an anxiety attack at 4 AM, sometimes I use my phone to distract myself....just googling this n that....and I finally drift off to sleep.

Deep breathing - everywhere I've looked (regarding natural anxiety reducers) deep breathing pops up. I"ve tried it....and if anything, it makes things worse. One therapist said it requires practice.....maybe I'm expecting immediate results - and just getting frustrated.....

I find Dr's quiet ignorant and just push a pill for depression and anxiety, i say that and I work for a practice in the UK.

Do your own investigating, research, research and research.
