Dear Jenkral, Sorry about your anxiety attacks. It takes awhile to find the proper meds to take. I have had panic attacks since I was 17 yrs old. I AM now 63. I hope you are seeing a psychiarist for your anxiety and not just a gp. That would make me feel very safe for you.IMO,PANIC ATTACKS happen frequently or right back to back when you are just starting to get the attacks. Once you find the right meds, they should keep them at bay. I chose medication because the panic attacks were too severe for me. I would end up in the hospital. There are some folks who dont believe in meds. I am not one of those people.

I take an antidepressant to keep those attacks away. It takes awhile for your body to adjust. But when you have the right combination of therapy and medications,I am living proof that the meds work.

I have never had a severe panic attack on the meds. One time,I wanted to try to be without it. I went off too fast, and my Panic Attacks resumed.

So, I went back on them again.

Get Some suggestions from other folks here on what other things work for them. I had to give up coffee because of the caffeine in it. I changed my dentistry novicaine to lydocaine. While you are going through group therapy,or counseling, you will get a toolbox worth of tips. Try them all out. They will work for you. Learning how to breathe is essential in keeping panic attacks away. Ie: You will start to know when a panic attack is coming, and then you start breathing in and out deep breaths slowly. You go for a walk. Oxygen is good for anxiety.

I highly reccommend Panic Attack Classes,as they teach you so much. The classes also teach you how to desentisize your body from panic attacks.

It is a long process, but it works. If u are getting them all day, back to back, I would ask the doctor for a medicine that will keep you calm until you learn how to manage them.

The long term meds they use are not addictive.

The short term meds may be addictive but they are only meant for a short time. Until you get stable.

Good Luck and there is hope for panic attacks and IMO,treatable by meds and therapy.

Feel free to write me anytime. I have been suffering on and off from severe to mild panic attacks my whole life. You are doing the right thing by reaching out now.

Best,

Skyrooms

Thank you so much for your reply it was very helpful. unfortunately my whole support system feels that meds are not necessary.. Dr gave xanax so now when I have panic attack someone has to remind me that it's an addictive drug and my body is just freaking out Bc it don't have it and it's not a panic attack.. I usually only take like 2 a week and most of the time it's just before bed. and when I said I need to go back to the dr I was told I was just looking for an excuse to go back keep in mind iv pretty much been doing it on my own trying to fight threw the attack sometimes it's just to rough.. I was in counseling threw school since I can remember.. I miss it and I hope I can go back soon

I understand where you are coming from. Xanax is not a proper drug. If you decide to go torwards meds, what helped me for anxiety was this drug called klonopin. For me,I want to be sane. I dont want the panic attacks. I CANNOT HANDLE THEM. I ALSO TAKE AN ANTIDEPRESENT AND THIS IS NOT ADDICTING. I take 4 anti depressent pills every day just to avoid the panic attacks. If u ever try to do meds, please get a good reccommendation for a good psychiatrist. I am here if you want to talk more.

Lots of peace and love to you,

Jenkral16, I hesitated responding because I wasn't sure I fully understood what your approach to anxiety was. Now I see that you are using Xanax only twice a week or so. That is what is causing your up and down panic attacks to break through. Xanax may work fast and well but loses it's efficacy by not staying in the body for longer than 4-6 hours. Since there isn't a steady dose of the drug in you, your brain tells you body it needs another fix and you slide into another attack. Xanax really isn't the way to go. Unless taken everyday it will not work. And yet, if taken everyday, it doesn't take long before your body gets dependent on that dosage and the dose needs to be raised.

As Skyrooms has suggested, you need to find other alternatives in handling your anxiety as well as a psychiatrist who will monitor you. Being on an antidepressant would be a better way to go long term. You NEED that steady amount of drug in you. It's hard to fight an occasional benzo drug. It actually would be easier w/o the benzo in order to turn your anxiety around. I hope you are able to have a serious talk with your doctor or therapist regarding your medication plan. It's all important to you getting stabilized. Wish you luck

Hi Jenkral, Is the crappy feeling coming from the drug or the Panic Attacks?

I hope you feel better soon.
